THE HANDLE! one thing that is so important but neglected! here's a clue, it was in every shot of the guy's camera. That little wooden handle thing I don't know what it's called. I have a gimbal, a nice tripod, monopod, steadicam etc. BUT the thing I use the most is a little Varavon metal piece that attaches to the cage. Cage is also essential for mounting shit and protecting your cam. It's not much but it gives me support to hold my Black Magic like a camcorder, the worst part about the DSLR video 'revolution' is that all these cameras are still shaped like you're taking stills. some kind of simple grip is all you need and it can be with your own personal touch, which is nice. I use it because sometimes to get that crazy angle you can't have a gimbal, or a crane, or a jib arm attached to your camera. It's about what's in front of the camera not what's behind it, remember! A minimalist setup will help you get away with shooting without permits as well

Hello everyone, hope you are great!
Im a amateur filmmaker from Colombia, I really want to turn into pro
tutorials in spanish, especially from Spain are good, but I want to learn in English
because they are the best in the filmmaking area, Im not speak english well yet but
I have a good listening and I understand almost everthing, but sometimes concepts
and words shows up and it has no translation, for example. INDIE FILMMAKER, could
anyone explain me a bit better what Indie means. thank you my world filmmaking community

Hi Indy, could you schedule an interview with a cinema / video operator specializing in aerobatic aircraft in the future? They are in trouble because they are very high speeds (250 knots, have very sudden movements, are often far away and very powerful telephoto lenses must be used. I would like to know which video head they use and the techniques they use. Many Thanks

Didn't see the link to the podcast? when I clicked more info all there was, was Category Film & Animation
Side note where can you find a mole 1k for $50 or has it been that long since I looked? Heck an Arri pepper (150 watt) costs a couple hundred. My 416 cost 1200 but i got a nice sounding Rode a hell of a lot cheaper

You need a camera and device with video editing software. And creativity. And from there you will be gathering tons of shit if you really get into filmmaking. And you will cry because you don't have money for the stuff you actually want so you just cry and create something that will do until you get the equipment you need. It is helluva ride.

Would you make a film with a black magic pocket camera with the correct cinema lenses, good lighting, steadycam, ND filter, and good color grading? Obviously good framing, sound, and composition? Also great story and dialogue? Need not forget great visual storytelling?

What I enjoyed the most is that the camera was the last piece of equipment. I see too many people worried about gear. I got rid of a lot of gear years ago and now I am shooting a lot more. Excited to see where the future takes me as a Producer. (:

I started with photography, bought a shit load of stuff. And now my friends need me to do videography. It's a whole new world and if i'd buy everything I could really use then it would cost me a few thousand extra. FML.

you don't need a gimbal?
Come one, man, gimball vs no gimbal footage has big difference, you can not stabilize with hands that much (at least not with majority of cameras/lenses, may be some are ok)

So it's been a while and it seems that mole richardson 1k isn't nearly as affordable or as easy to find as I imagine it was when this video was posted, do you have any ideas on what to buy instead?

can you record an interview with two or three people and use some kinda blue tooth mic?
seems possible but not sure what you'd have to buy to get both audio tracks into filmic pro.

These guys are so out of touch with actual starting filmmaker budgets. You cannot find a mole-richardson light for $50. I struggled to find one used for under $1000.

reply

Shit. Well if heat is the issue blocking more high quality pixels then make a camera that will overheat and give it to me. It's not gonna overheat where I'm using it lol.

Really great tips. I've started filming cooking vids and am looking to make sure my lighting and audio is the best it can be. Thanks again!

man, your face seems like it's locked in infinite positivity. it's the kind of thing you both hate and love at the same time, hehe.
reply

Dont waste your time on gear and just make something! For the price of all this gear you could finance a simple feature film!
