It's been too long, dang it! But it's been a weird couple years to say the least. Whatever though, let's check some of the usual thrift stores in my area and seeing what kinds of retro tech and random old oddities we can find. Let's go thrifting! Man those typewriter style keyboards. Since Ive seen the Tesla computer in Warehouse 13 Ive been obsessed with those. It started with a single guy modding keyboards into a steampnk look and one of them was used as a prop in Warehouse 13.
His cost about 1000$ though, and he makes them by hand. It took a couple years to affordable plastic ones to hit the market. I have been using nothing else for the last 10-12 years. Sure its very hit and miss, and the ones I like never live long enough. But let me tell you: If you find a good one theyre great. Somehow they are more pleasant to type on, must be the round keys(mabye miming a typewriter is helping there. And gaming also is better. Im one who slides the hand across the board to feel the key Im looking for while looking at the monitor and the big gaps between the round keys help a lot.
TLDR Typewriter style keyboards are better than you think, lots of plastic crap in between though

8: 44 That AIWA bookshelf system was the first big purchase I made with my after school job back in 1999. It sounded great and kicked like a mule. The karaoke feature dropped out the vocals (and sometimes the drums) from tape or CD surprisingly well. It also had A. I. Recording (reminder, this was 1999, where you select the length of tape you wanted to record a CD to, the machine would then reorder the tracks so they would all fit on the tape, with the intention of not cutting a song short.
I need to buy another one. It was just too cool.

Hey LGR, not really related to this video but I know you have always been a big sim city fan and wanted to see if you had ever heard of a game called Theotown it is a city builder that has features from games like cities, as well as the region system from simcity 4 but the game has the aesthetic and graphics style of Sim City 2k. I hadn't heard about it until recently but have been very impressed with it as a fan of retro city builders just wanted to pass the word

Been checking goodwill occasionally over the last few years but I'm gonna behones there's basically no point checking goodwills if you live in major cities. 99% of the store is clothing and you're lucky if you get a shelf for misc electronics (read: hair dryers, curlers, usb speakers) and a single small shelf for dvds, games, etc. At least in San Diego, CA. Really bums me out each time I go hoping to find something, anything interesting.

2: 41 Lord of the Rings on VHS Those have got to be among the last major Hollywood studio VHS releases. I have heard that even by 2001, studios were starting to print VHS releases exclusively in the higher-priced for commercial rental editions (that I hear studios have some kind of settlement with Blockbuster et all to make them pay more for their copies than the consumer copies sold at retailers.

15: 45 Overhead projector! They are one of the very few pieces of tech I'm nostalgic about and I wish they still made them but with LEDs, transparencies would be much better than all the born-broken projectors you can't connect to even if you work for it for dozens of minutes these days or the old stuff which sound like leafblowers and only work if the messed up cables are sitting in that one angle

So glad to see you back in action, and with a new thrifting video too! You said it a dozen times in the video, but I don't think it can be said enough. It's been a heck of a year, a heck of a past few years, and so any moment where we can do what we love is especially precious nowadays. These thrifting videos may be coming slower, but it's even more appreciated. Cheers, and happy thrifting.

3: 54 gotta take that cassette recorder not only for the wood grain but also because of its ability to connect to some 8-bit micros and have the REM port; )
EDIT: on second look, it looks VERY much like the TI tape recorder for the 99/4A. I don't have it with me to compare the speaker placement, but it LOOKS like that model may be the drive train for the TI

I recently started working at a goodwill. It's pretty fun besides dealing with resellers and it kinda sucks that there is a strict purchase policy for employees. I hear it has something to do with 'fairness' which made sense to me until I saw that resellers often show up every single day and spawn camp on anything they can sell for 10x-100x our price.

Its insane what those Goodwills in the US are asking for crap. 6 bucks for yellowed dirty speakers from the 90s/00s (and i guess thats before taxes, yeah sure. I can get new ones from Temu or whatever for the same price, maybe even lower or look at a local fleamarket here in Germany to get way better ones for the same price or maybe a bit higher.

I remember when the battle between hd-dvd and blu-ray hadn't been settled, I bought the collector's edition of Bladerunner on both formats. This was before I had even bought a player. I waited to see which format won and then I sold the other one on eBay. In retrospect, I probably should have kept the hd-dvd one because it is more rare now.

Have you ever checked out the mountain home thrift store in black mountain I found a pretty sweet akai ap b20 record player there. Store was nicely set up and there was a better good stuff to junk ratio than most thrift stores.
Edit: lol I had a copy of dungeon Lord. I'm pretty sure I never actually opened it.

i'd like to go back thrifts you know. Not that I don't do but good thrifts, these are uncommon.
There's very little electronics i mostly care about books.
My only electronics thrifts has been psp case and gadgets and games, but eventually i had to open that thing to fix the button and the joystick.

This is brilliant. T he Dungeon Siege game is a great one for PC. I played it a lot years ago. I would have liked to have bought half of this stuff. I cant resist items like these. Luckiky my pick ups are mostly from free giveaway sites. I have waaay too many things already now.

Love your videos! The lighting, sound, music, visuals, your voice, etc. Everything works so well! You make me want to know about stuff I did not care about (you do make alot of videos of stuff I do care about of course! A video about weird nerdy socks from the 80's Sure, I'll take it!

Goodwill has recently gone crazy with their price's. Which is ridiculous being that it all is donated. Many items are cheaper to buy new. Was wondering if anyone else thought the same so I did some research and lots and lots of people are complaining about it.

I just wanted to let you know how happy I was to watch you walk around and find some cool stuff. Hope whatever you’re going through gets easier and I’ll be looking forward to hopefully seeing another one of your thrift adventures again soon
reply

THanks for this. THe one near me has nothing of any value ever. I even donated some things and checked a half week later and they probably sent it all to somewhere else since there was nothing I had given. Either that or they threw it all.

I stopped buying computer stuff from Goodwill! They've raised their prices on everything and I have a good size box of nothing but e-waste I've gotten from them so, no thanks! Their on-line auction site is nothing but a huge scam!

I think it was E3 2004 while everyone at Dreamcatcher Interactive was away at the expo when I illustrated that Dungeon Lords cover. Apparently a not so great game but the cover seemed to sell quite a few copies!
