After a decade of waiting, the next SimCity is finally here! From the perspective of a lifelong enthusiast, is it any good? Er, you may want to sit down for this one. Buy SimCity 4 on my game shop and help support the show!

It's a reboot, made by EA. I think a lot of people had unreasonable expectations for what this game would be. I really enjoyed it after the launch issues were sorted, I still play it sometimes with friends. Was it dumb to have a single player game that requires an internet connection? Maybe, but I have an internet connection that is always on, so from my point of view it was irrelevant. I actually like the online savegames, It means I don't have to backup save data if I want to reinstall. I can easily go back and play cities I made years ago. The simulation certainly has its issues, sometimes your city will be suffering budget problems, or lack of growth, but after restarting the game things turn around. It's certainly far from a perfect game, but it's still fun as a city building game. It reminds me of Civilization: Revolution that came out for consoles, it wasn't exactly the Civilization game that made the franchise what it is, but rather it took the core gameplay of those games and stripped away some of the complexity in order to give the player a more streamlined 'pick up and play for a few hours' game. In older SimCity games you could spend hours just getting a city going, in SimCity2013 I can be done a city and moving on to the next one in a couple hours. I think the worst thing about SimCity 2013 is that its on Origin.

I started with SC Classic, and am now an avid Cities: Skylines player. Looking back at this review, you got it so right. Once you filled the map, it was all about gridding out the space to get in all the stuff your city needed to be successful. And as someone else on this thread pointed out, everyone's city ended up looking pretty much the same. I wore the final iteration of SC out within about 10 days.
I played SC4 until I saw Cities: Skylines. I went back and played it a little, and kind of still liked it. Now SC4 seems so simple. Cities: Skylines is just a way richer experience, especially with all of the fantastic mods (free, by the way.

The most brutal thing about this, is playing Cities: Skylines. This 2013 game is much more charming and has a better feel, from a design and animation standpoint. Often times, CS is even more buggy than this even was. But they have fixed issues and embraced the community to create -exactly- what we were all waiting for. The ultra-corporate EA model creates this animosity and frustration that then makes any small issues ruin the whole game. Add to that the completely anti-community tactics of ignoring complaints and shutting down modders. Incredible how wrong this went. I-ll go back to creating detailed overpasses in CS now.

Dont understand why they thought just building in a small square is something we wanted (and to play online with others, like thats the last thing i want in a city builder) but just the small square feature sucks. The region view system in SimCity 4 was the real way, you have your square, but could build on the square directly next and make one huge metropolis, with suburbs and everything. Even Cities: Skylines suffers from this issue, but thanks to mods you can have a huge play space, which helps, but not ideal. Someone needs to make a modern rendition of SimCity 4, but like Cities: Skylines today.

And then this game managed to get 10 patches(when i stopped playing it was on v10. 1, Didn't fixed all the bugs, the devs admitted that the GlassBox engine didn't simulated the sims as supposed to( from its home, to work, back home again, it just spawned a sim, who got to the nearest empty workplace, and then to the nearest empty house at night. after that EA removed all devs from the SimCity project, the forums turned into a wasteland( there was one mod left, tho said that the devswere in a secret project and in total radio silence) and after that maxis went under.

I never realised how terrible SimCity 2013 really was, I looked at the game, watched a few gameplay videos on it and thought it's got good graphics and people that were complaining were just typical gamers who moan about any slight changes to a sequel of a game, wow how I was wrong, even tho it's 2020 and a few of the issues have been fixed, and there are some mods that fix other issues, the game is still now where near the level of cities skylines especially with all the dlc and mods, its at a whole other level compared to this shite

This is incredible to look back on now that we know SC is basically dead and people are starting to talk about cities skylines 2. Just like, layers and layers (and layers) of absolutely boneheaded decisions by EA. If they'd only made 80 percent as many mistakes they might still be a viable player in this subgenre, but their attitude here feels like peak -We will allow you lowly customers to play our glorious game out of the goodness of our hearts-, I think they've even gotten a little better (a tiny bit) since this era.

I think the biggest thing that annoyed me about this game is that traffic wasn't a solvable issue. No matter what you did you had these HUGE traffic jams in and out of your city. I remember in sim city 2000 all my -end game- cities would only have subways. just with a station every like 6 squares. Sure it cost a lot but when every thing was an archology it was fine. I had cities with tens of millions of pop. what a great game: ) I'm going to go and play sim city 2000 now. lol

I love how that game looks so much that it was so sad to be hyped by this, it was disspointing, playing cities skylines, after Cities XXXXXL, still looking, its sad how much computers have advanced, and other genres, but this genre is still stuck in the same cliches, cant they make a good city builder, btw i consider cities skylines a good execution, but a mediocre masterpiece, again they could do more, FPS, race games, etc they have advanced so much.

I love your reviews. Sorry to say better than Stan Burdman. You talk about the game play and what you like and dislike about it. That is what I like in a review. Not cussing and inappropriate language and doing a live review, showing a hint of game play and mocking it. Good job. I think I need to look into getting City Skylines. Sim City does have it's moments of fun. My biggest problem is staying in the black and resolving traffic.
