Before Fallout, there was Wasteland from Interplay in 1988. And it exploded cRPG gamers' minds like a blood sausage with its post-apocalyptic awesomeness!

I really like Wasteland 2 and 3, but the original game is more of an interactive book, a bad interactive book. Everything is built on the principle of -the player entertains himself. - Read paragraphs, guess which square to apply a particular skill, and watch for hours at a mountain of squeaking pixels moving across the screen. I was born in 1986, but I cannot imagine what could have caused people in those years to spend months of their lives on this. Even by the standards of its time, Wasteland 1 was an incredibly archaic project.
For example just look at Ultima 1, which came out in 1981, on the same system that uses a similar visual style, but what a chasm lies between these two games. There was even a rudimentary first-person view. What Interplay have been doing for two whole years, I am not able to understand. I think the only advantages of the original are an interesting lore and a rather twisted plot. It's good that today we have a playable remastered version that corrected many of the flaws of the original. In other words, the first game requires a complete remake.

An amazing game, the only thing I really hate about this game however is the auto save feature whenever you go into a new area (Not sure if this was a thing that happened in original, because I got it on Steam)
I got to Las Vegas and found myself attacked by the robots who started kicking my ass, so naturally I run, but I run into a nearby building and discover there is no other way out of it and because my characters aren't strong enough I can't kill the robots who are just standing outside the door waiting for me.
So there went my save file: , I really love the game, but that really sucked.

I-m severely disappointed by Wasteland 2. I had such hope, only to re-hash the same plot, with -you escalate faster than the enemy does- issues-had one brawler towards the end one-punching robots-and plagued by a technical issue which makes the endgame literally impossible. (The countdown always wins)
Next classic experience (or I just need to dig up the existing video): Tass Times in Tone Town.

Had my Apple II stolen two days after I bought Wasteland. Got one of those newfangled -Nintendo's- to fill the void until I could afford another computer. That was distracting. Spent all my extra cash on games. By the time I had another computer, Doom 2 was already out--and Wasteland was a distant memory. Never played it.

Being born in 2000, I find it fun to see how the activity with which I waste my life on was back before I was born. I-m used to playing old 2000s games and calling the newborns queers but seeing how games really were back in the day makes me feel like a queer myself.

Huh so the Old World Blues Mod for Hoi4 makes a refrence to this game. One of the potential leaders for the nation Rangers is named Snake Vargas, I think they also have one named Thrasher segara or something. I'd have to check but still cool.

Tried playing the remastered version and died about 10 times before reaching the first town. Promptly rage quit and uninstalled the game lol fuuuuuck that I'll stick with the classic fallout games for my nuclear wasteland old rpg game!

The best part of being a 2 disc game was you would make boot copies. The persistent world meant once you looted Vegas, it would stay looted. But just remake the disc, and your party was the same but with a restored Vegas. So a good cheat.

Spinning it in a dance of death!
Exploding like a blood sausage!
Well written thoughtful dialog and story line.
It would be nice to redo it, verbatim, in the Skyrim engine at 4K textures and very similar look and unforgiving feel.

Gawd I'm old. Remember the copy protection where the game would reference a certain passage with a code that you had to look up in that lookup in the physical book? Youngins don't realize this game literally started the Fallout Universe.
