My first memory of this game is seeing it in a store as a kid. It must have been 2002-03 or something like that. I remember it was in a time where pc games were small CD-ROMs in a CD cover in a huge box. Later while i was in elementary school and my mom still had a Windows XP i got interested in Maxies titles and downloaded this one and actually found it very addictive. I remember getting so much into the game that i actually started reading books about ants: ) And then i found out how realistic this game was. Which only made it even cooler in my eyes: )

I really was super into these games, installed em all over my elementary school. The computer teacher appreciated the content. Apparently there is a version without the speech bubbles and combat dialog tho, which I used to find hilarious. Just saw another let's play and there was no speech at all. That's all I know about different versions but as you know, early maxis games were heavily ported and often modified.
-Your mother wears combat boots! - Lol. Apparently ants also racist against spartans and saxons.

I have to sneak into the red colony by finding the hole at the bottom in my nest at least once every playthrough. Also, can't you find water down there sometimes and drown? Hahah. Killing yourself is fun too like in the electric socket. As a kid, I think through the tutorial level, I would make this elaborate ant fort by putting these rocks and shit everywhere, which is so pointless given how easy it is to win the game / fend off red ants, but whatever man. I'd still spend AGES on that.

I was always disappointed that you didn't have to take over all the squares in the yard. Granted there are a lot of them, but I would have preferred that there were fewer, larger squares and you have to manually conquer every one, rather than conquer a couple and you automatically take over the whole yard and move into the house. I mean, what's the point of having a campaign game if you only have to beat a couple territories on the map?

I took forever to win this game as a kid. I built huge fortified ant colonies, made myself a soldier and attacked basically everything with other soldiers following me. I would seal in the red ants so they only had one entrance and then I would go in and wipe them out. I did that on every tile, slowly making my way to the house and claiming it one tile at a time.

You play this game very differently than I do, heh. I mainly ran around as the yellow ant and grabbed food or attacked the red ants. It took me a long time, but eventually I learned how you can swap to Soldier ants and how to recruit ants to follow you. I'd lead my squad on raids on the red nest or surrounded the spider to kill it, or whatever. It was ton of fun.

SimAnt was a fantasticly fun little game. I would love to see a new version, with different species of ants available (aphid herders, fungus farmers, slaver ants, army ants, more predators and prey, different environments for some awesome sandbox play and even multiplayer.
They could make expansion packs where you can play as termites or bees.

Cheat on full game mode. Press 'x' click on your queen. Click on 'center spider icon' press 'x' click on the spider. press 'x' then click on the spider. A queen will spawn beneath the spider. Repeat rinse. you can do this with soldiers and any other ant types too to clone them. But cloning a queen can boom you population in no time.

I love this game to death! They should re-release it! :)
I am a myrmecologist. Had ants instead of cats and dogs as pets. Did you know if you give ants juice, and they drink enough of it, that their butts will turn the color of the juice? Coolest thing ever to actually watch. XD Easier to tell on black ants obviously. XD
