You may think of Minesweeper as a game one only plays casually. but think again. Enjoy the history and making of the game, as well as some details on things like 3BV, NF, and competitive play!

Didn't raise an eyebrow. got over 80000 games of minesweeper: ]
Unfortunately I'm just a casual-type player with a 70s record, but indeed the game has some kind of depth and techniques that deserve to be known and are key to being competitive. Thanks for the video.
edit: > If you look into being a monster at this game, please learn it the right way. I'm a pure flagger using only double click to open the map and because it's the gameplay I'm used to and I like, I don't wanna work on it. You know, practice doesn't make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect.

This is hard to watch. Does nobody know that you can (at least in the Windows versions) click both mouse buttons at the same time on a numbered square with the correct number of flagged mines adjacent? In doing so it reveals all safe squares in the vicinity. My record for Beginner level when I was a teenager was about 4 seconds. Granted it took a lot of luck to win a game that fast but I was regularly winning beginner level in 9 seconds or less. Intermediate and Expert obviously took longer but I can't believe people are doing them single left-clicks at a time.

chording is actually really useful, even a bit of a crutch for me. all i do is chord now, since it the ability to just open up huge amounts of space like that and not have to click squares basically makes it so you never accidently click a square that has a mine when clearing. in addition to this, completely eliminates the need to figure out which squares are safe, i can do a chord n boom all safe squares were revealed. much simpler to only have to look for mines and have to occasionally search for safe squares when a chord isnt possible

Now, in 2019, most -casual- games to ever come bundled with Windows are free to download on Microsoft Store. They're all squeaky clean UWP apps with more Xbox Live integration than necessary, and I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out that they can run unmodified on Xbox One.
I wish, though, that Purble Place and 3D Pinball Space Cadet also got the UWP treatment. At least the binaries from XP and Vista still run on 10.

I love that Minesweeper is getting appreciation but I wouldn't recommend ignoring flagging.
One of the most helpful use of flags is visual aid. It's easy to recognize the pattern using flags as they come into play for other set of tiles as well.
Plus you can set your game to end when you flag every bomb and that's EXTREMELY useful in cases where in the endgame you have no choice but to gamble.

I play with an absolute minimum of strategy. I'd never even heard of chording. I just try to see how fast my mental reactions are, how fast I can figure out the numbers. The problem is, I'm the only person I know who actually plays it but I am not interested into getting into some kind of hardcore -community. - That is just taking something simple way too seriously.

what the hell is all that linguo, all I know about minesweeper is the simple logic puzzle, I had never even dreamed about such things, maybe is because I'm just happy by winning, even if I have to scratch my head for several minutes. But the thrill of the last 2 squares is pretty intense, a 50/50 chance, all or nothing

Im a pretty good mine sweeper player but I can't do a no flag for the life of me, I always forget which tiles are confirmed bombs without having a marker.
I mean I make up for this by playing a version with octogons and 1k+ bombs on a giant sphere, but you know, no flag is insane.

playing these with digital/light sensor mice is nothing like having the roller ball mouse and ensuring it was lint free and the tactile receiver rollers around it were working fine.
just so there were cursor didn't move erratically when one is really trying to beat the timer.

i still remember the exuberance when (in my teens) i had after barely a week or so of practice. clocked just about 9 seconds on the beginner level.
ahh the 1990s: ). i obviously didn't have or know of any way to screen record or anything #sigh so.
