I'm thinking about getting a VR headset for Christmas, but I'm not sure whether to get one on PC or on a console. If I get one on PC, I will have to buy a new computer for a hefty cost, and still will have to put in a lot of money for a headset. If I get it on console, there's a strong chance I'll only be able to get it on the Playstation 4 by the end of the year, as I don't think a VR or AR headset will arrive on Xbox One in time before the holidays. Also, I've been switching towards the Xbox One, because the Playstation 4 doesn't have enough memory and has no support for external hard drives, where as the Xbox one does support external hard drives and is currently releasing a 2TB slim console this August. Unless I can somehow get 2TB of disk space on a Playstation 4, I won't be able to switch back as finding a 2TB hard drive for the PS4 is not very likely where I'm from. Can anyone help me out with this?

I have a question though. What is up with the trackpads on the controller? What are they there for and how do they work? Don't they work like the steam controllers pads/regular touchpads? Because looking at them that's what they seem to be. But then why doesn't anyone think about using them to emulate the left stick of a controller? It works just fine on the steam controller and I constantly use them for such things. And I think it's a better and less unimmersive option than teleporting around most times (though the teleporting mechanic works really well in games like Budget Cuts, too)
Still it got me thinking if it even is the same kind of trackpad.

Lol. The maniacal laughter of a two ton death machine wielding serial killer on a rampage. Good review too. Opinions shared entirely. It is about 80% there on the hardware (tracking is unbelievable but the HMD rez, FOV and ergonomics need a lot more tweaking. All VR is deep content (genuinely designed for VR which is risky) starved at this point. That said, the potential is just incredible. 2nd Gen VR if the video cards required scale with it will probably hit 90%. 3rd Gen VR in 5+ years will be the first dawn of Job if rogue AI doesn't spring into the wild and take over the planet first.

got to demo this at my brothers house on a recent vacation and it's awesome! That's hardly objective but it really is and you really can see how it's the future (as predicted in lawnmower man) so if you have the money, time and space it is so worth it otherwise wait. Personally I don't have the space to dedicate to this plus I want to see how the VR market develops but it was really fun and like I said it is worth it if you have all the necessary resources to dedicate to it. Also, like in lawnmower man I feel markedly smarter after using it along with homicidal tendencies!

hello there, i need your help, as of now i want to get my first VR, i have a laptop strong enough for it (FX505DU) with HDMI, and for me, tracking is so important, i want to know if this is still worth it? cuz i searched and the new things didnt quite reach the tracking of this htc vive yet cuz of its two stationary room scale tracking, do u still approve this headset or u think a better version of this is available now and cheaper (note that i am buying it second handed half price with its eye lens adjustment switch broken)

Awesome! BTW, star trek fandom. greatly appreciated! would my laptop be able to handle this equipment, I just bought an Asus ROG G752VT-DH72, also do you think one would be able top design a house this? specifically, I've used the Home By Me software to design a 3 story house to fit inside of an identical 1/3 scale version of the U. S. S Rhode Island from star trek voyager. after seeing that footage in the holodeck I'm fired up to bring that home design to life with the Vive if it can do it. thx in advance for any answer =)

Hi Clint- just wanted to say thanks for this review and your more in depth overview as well! They helped persuade me into buying one last night. There was a deal on Amazon for the Vive, the Deluxe Audio Strap, Fallout 4 VR, and a $100 Amazon gift card for 600 bucks, which is what the Vive alone goes for normally. It was too good of a deal to pass up: )
PS any thoughts about doing an updated review with that Deluxe Audio strap and the updated game situation? There's a lot more out there now: )

I surely can't afford to be an early-adopter, but a couple of the Google Cardboard experiences with a cheap box w/straps were enough to make me take a good long look at my credit card.
Even with the poor mans cardboard experience, I was amazed how much you find yourself lost in the experience, that it becomes your world. Kind of like how you're really aware of the 3D in a 3D movie for a bit until you start to forget it's even there (thankfully.

I watched this video when it was posted almost two years ago and now that the Vive is $200 cheaper, I'm finally going for it. I'm glad I waited too because for my very first VR experience, there's so much more to do now. There's even full body trackers now. I can't wait to buy them and see my virtual body walking around. I still can't get over how far the technology has advanced in just a few years after an eternity of stagnation.

One thing I didn't know (this may be different on the Vive vs. the Rift) is that your headset and your display need to be connected to the same graphics card, which if you're running an SLI/Crossfire setup means you don't get to use a single HDMI port on each card. I fixed that with a $15 DisplayPort to HDMI cable, but if your headset just showed up in the mail and you want to get it fired up it can be a real buzzkill.
