I remember being super excited about B&W long before it released, but then when I finally got to play it after launch it was such a massive dissapointment. Everything was super clunky and as is typical for Molyneux, most things don't make sense or follow any kind of logic. Many of the systems didn't work as advertised or just took way longer to make any progress than they let on. The gesture system rarely worked correctly, and was completely pointless because it has shortcut keys for everything. And then comes the problem that there's very little gameplay and it is massively repetitive. The majority of the game really is just gimmicks and the ability to slap around your pet, and not a whole lot else. The launch version also had the issue that it took a year to load because it automatically loaded your last save, only to pop up a box to ask you which save to load, which would then take another year to load, along with many other issues. The first massive patch changed the system so it didn't load the game till you told it to, and in general everything went faster, and they trimmed down a lot of things to make it simpler and less obscure to play, which only made it obvious how non-existent the gameplay is

Thank you for reminding me of this imho absolutely amazing game.
I have the fondest memories of spending hours and hours playing this but also some of the worst because it was bugged and suddenly unplayable even after reinstalling on my system (which was devastating for little me.
Nonetheless I absolutely loved this game as a child and it still has the same charm and gives me the same dreamy, warm and cozy feeling to this day besides its quirks.
The music and atmosphere is on point and phenomenal for its time and it was one of the first games besides Half Life/Counterstrike that introduced me to multiplayer.
I just started playing again after seeing your video. It is perfectly playable on modern systems. All you need to do is install the game, install patch 1. 1 and 1. 2 and then the community patch 1. 42 from bwfiles. com.
Working like a charm!

This Game made me question if im sane. -
I was like 7 or 8 years old back then when it was released. friday evening, nobodys home, enjoying black and white 1. suddenly a demonic like voice was calling my name. the first time ive heard that ive nearly shat my pants. After the second time i thought my brother was playing a prank on me but he wasnt home. after a few times i got used to it but it was still creepy asf! Told my friends in school about it and they were all like -haha you get insane blabla- but one of them told me later he heard the voice to and it was calling his name. we both felt like we were in a horrormovie. we went to the library (yeah back then most people dont had internet at home) to search the internet and found it was a f-cking easteregg! Damn you Peter Molyneux playing pranks on childs! XD Yeah good old Childhoodmemories.

I have loved this game since it came out. Playing it on Windows 7 is difficult, and you can no longer edit scripts.
Does anyone know how I can edit in notepad?
And I'm having an issue with Khazar not coming back once the prayer altar is built at the beginning of the second land. I've uninstalled the game, but it still happens. Should I be removing every single file and trainer/cheat engine(once I figure out which one may cause the issue) and reinstalling them?
Thanks to anyone who can offer help, it's been hard to find people interested in this game.

It wasn't that bad! I used to love the gesture system and miss it still. There are ways to improve the accuracy of the commands. Also there was very few game breaking bugs and I really love the idea! Too bad every B&W game after this was lacking in innovation. Also got the Creature Isle, and some of it is fun! Some of the old Lionhead people tried to make Godus, but that failed. Only issue I have now, is that the graphics looks awful on newer computers, you really have to run it on Windows XP to get good graphics.

Say what you want avout Peter Molyneux, but the guy is a real creative full of awesome ideas, too bad that in the game development business it's not enough to be creative, you have to get the tools, the technology and the staff to make those ideas work, that's what failed.
But I loved this game nonetheless and I played it way after it was released, hype is a horrible thing, it makes you unable to judge a game objectively, it was very good game, but the thing is that molyneux promised something 10x better.

when i had a laptop, i used to go back and find a cracked version of this and play it just about annually (owned the physical copy as a kid, but it was lost to time/multiple moves/etc)
now tempted to do so again, but i'm not sure how i'd get it to run on windows 10. or if i could even still find a copy online.
either way, hearing the song of the sailors from the first map, i began singing along immediately. such a fun and unique game.

Ignoring the Molyneux in the room, I really liked this game. Wouldn't be opposed to a remake/remaster with the bugs addressed and packaged with the DLC. I actually loathed the fact that they ditched the mouse based interaction in favor of a toolbar in Black and White 2. They should have refined it and leaned into the single player god fantasy, and not caved to the whims the strategy game nerds and dumbed down the AI.

I loved this game and still do, even though I no longer own it, sadly. I would pretty much always use the cow as my Creature. And I would always be an evil god - So satisfying to come to the first quest of the woman looking for her brother and bargaining with me for the stone in her hut. I brought him to her, then killed him in front of her, smashed her house and took the stone anyway! Mwahaha.

I loved Black & White so much, despite it's bugs. It was a chilled experience with many interesting scenarios and beautiful visuals! I liked the second one too, especially the ability to control armies, but found the second one hurried the player through the story instead of letting players build the world at their own pace. Still two of my favorite RTS experiences.
