The Greatest Long Takes In Film And TV MrGivememyoldaccount: Some of these aren't one single take, but are edited in such a way. I believe in true detective when the camera goes up to the helicopter light is a cut, but edited in such a way that it looks like one single take. Same with Children of men, at one point blood actually splattered on the lens and then seamlessly disappears as the scene continues. A couple months ago I saw season 2 of The Last Kingdom and there was a Viking raid on a camp, which was a very good long take and I was very impressed. Better than some mentioned in this video.

I'm more impressed with a long shot that isn't edited, i. e, the scene in the TV miniseries AMERIKA where Christine Lahti takes about 5 minutes to explain to her brother Kris Kristofferson why she became the mistress of the Russian commandant who has taken over their town. There is no editing, no POV shifts, just one long camera shot of her face delivering the lines. It was very effective and one of the best acting scenes in TV history.

Considering like 60% of Gravity was CGI, including the actors themselves, it'd be easy to do a long take and not considered noteworthy.
I know this because of the CGI SFX people who did a documentary about how SHIT they treat these people. They were talking about how Bullock and Clooney made millions, and they weren't even there nearly half the time to do scenes since they were digitally added to many scenes.

Another great example of a long take is the opening of A Shot in the Dark. It wonderfully sets up the entire film and gives you a lasting impression of the characters that tells you all you need to know about them. A lot was in this take with no dialogue that would take pages of expositional dialogue to say. It is a masterful scene that sets up possibly the strongest Pink Panther movie to this date.

Seems like western audience are not aware of the Thailand action movie Tom Yum Goong (aka The Protector in US, the masterpiece from Tony Jaa. It has a super long single-shot fight scene that's even better than that in Old Boy, spanning multiple floors in a restaurant (instead of simple side scrolling Double Dragon camera. And the fights Tony Jaa goes through in that long shot is fantastic.

One nit: Any movie that has a long take in which the entire scene minus the actors is CG and/or done strictly through camera action does NOT count as a long take worthy of being great, any more than any opening soliloquy from any Shakespeare would count as a great long take.
I am of course referring to Gravity's inclusion on this list.

the single take if the battle near the end of Children of Men was tremendous, not because of how technical the shot is, but how emotional everyone gets when they see the baby, the first in nearly 2 decades, but it is not enough to stop man's violence against man.

I am Cuba was the first to have a long tracking shot follow into the water which was later copied by PT Anderson in Boogie Nights (another great movie with great tracking shots. I think I am Cuba also pioneered the tracking shot into an elevator and then out a window.

Thanks for listing all the movies!
Just an idea: would it be more interesting to show these long takes in high speed without cuts? Because now they look not like long takes very much with all the cuts you made in the video.

Pulp Fiction. The scene were Bruce Willis has to go back to his apartment to get his watch. I watched that scene on acid and the build-up and tension from him walking into that inevitable trap remains fixed in my mind.
