I keep thinking of memorable deaths in books and then realizing theyre technically YA or Childrens books. (I wont spoil anything) I think Where the Red Fern Grows got me the hardest. When I read it, I had a meltdown and had to sleep in my parents room because I was so upset. And of course the Harry Potter series. And Charlottes Web. Little Women. A Separate Peace.
Adult books? I cried really hard over Captain Correllis Mandolin. And theres a deep loss in the extremely depressing final volume of the Cazalet Chronicles. Tuesdays With Morrie was rough. But apparently its the books for younger readers that have resonated with me most, and Im not sure if its because of my age when I read them or if the deaths in youth fiction are somehow more emotional.

After I watch Boy in the Striped Pajamas movie with my mother, it actually took me a good minute after the last scene to fully understand what was happening. I was in high school and if I was paying enough attention to the movie, I probably would have quickly figured out how they died before it was all over. But the banging stopped and the scene turned to black, it hit me hard. I never cried so hard for a movie before. Except perhaps for Pay it Forward but this was close call.

We read To kill Mockingbird in English this year, and we discussed that Tom died on purpose; kind of like a suicide. I do agree that he was trying to escape, but it was also that he knew that he would have gotten killed if he ran, and he did anyway because of all the hope he lost when the jury convicted him guilty

Ive only heard a few of these and Read Especially Mice and men George Shooting Lennie Shocked my Whole Class this is the only film Ive almost cried In And green Mile Was the same
And I almost got to read How to kill a mockingbird

reply

Umm I read to kill a mockingbird and Tom Robinson dying wasn't as sad as the list made it seem. He was basically a dead man walking because he was a black male accused of rape in the 1930s in Alabama. What did the readers expect!

Can you include lists of books/tv shows/movies that you'll spoil in the description - with times so that we can view the video without getting spoiled, if we've only seen/read a few of the topics you're talking about?

I'm pretty sure The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is a middle grade/ya book so it shouldn't qualify on this list. Also, the two main deaths in The Absolutist (also written by John Boyne) were (in my opinion) much sadder

one name FRED WEASLEY. Another extremely sad book is A thousand spledid suns I highly recommend everyone read it, it's very well written and one of the saddest books ive ever read.

My english class during lockdown was on The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas so i watched it with my dad to get it more
Honestly one pf the most painful things Ive ever been through

I know it is not a 'famous' novel, but Mr. Crepsley's death in the Darren Shan Vampire Saga killed me and reduced me to a withering wreck. I couldn't get over that for days.

More like Top 10 Saddest Deaths in Fiction Novels that have movie or tv adaptations. And also how is there no Harry Potter characters like Dobby or Sirius?
reply

I think Lennie HAD to die. he was very, very destructive, and he didn't know his own stregnth. I've even written an entire essay on this!

I remember reading that book in highschool. To Kill a Mockingbird was a quite interesting book. I was shocked. Great book though.

A lot of people are saying how the boy and the striped pajamas is so sad. Its truly is. The fact it happened then is just awful
reply

TBISP should be number 1. The death of the two very innocent children trying to be friends with each other is just devastating.
reply

i didnt read the boy in the dtriped pajamas book bc im a lazy ass but i watched the movie and that was so sad
reply

How is Gatsby only number 6! Only Nick and Gatsbys father turned up to his funeral yet everyone turned up to his parties
reply

Wait a second, want gatsby killed because he was wrongly accused of killing myrtle? Not for having an affair with her?
reply

I read the boy in the striped pajamas and flowers for algernon for a language arts project
the books were so sad.

reply

Oh come on they really missed Tris Prior from the Divergent book series? That was much sadder than any of those.
reply

I was infuriated when Gatsby died, he did all of that for her, only to get shafted and forgotten in the end.
reply

Seriously? Fiction novel? There are no non-fiction novels. Novel implies a work of fiction. Dudes, come on.
reply
