Heathers glamorizes murder and suicide and there is even a scene where JD pulls out a gun and begins shooting in the cafeteria (though later revealed they were blanks--though in todays world forget it. It is more what I consider a psychological thriller. It was one of those movies back in the day where the stuck up popular kids in HS all met their demise, all being murdered but set up so the student body thinks they took their own lives. . Oh and that's before JD plants a time bomb in the school basement. They could never release a film like that today without significant backlash!

A Clockwork Orange comes to mind - but it doesn't really fit in with the rest of the movies listed here. It's more of a sci-fi dystopian teen movie (perhaps we'll see another list, but that opening scene with the music will stand your hair on end. Bad Boys 1983 staring Sean Penn should be on this list or honorable mention. Night of the Comet 1984. Dark - Yes. teen movie - Yes should get an honorable mention

Some great choices. But where's Colors, Cruel Intentions, The Craft, The Final, I Never Promised You a Rose Garden, or Over the Edge? All of them are way darker than Ellection, and Better Off Dead. And River's Edge doesnt even belong here at all. It was an unmemorable flop. I saw it in the movie theater I worked in when it was first released.

Thirteen and 2. 37. 2. 37 is fantastic and is a good alternative to 13reasons why in my opinion as it isn't heavy on drama so much and hits home pretty well. Love Heathers (although only watched the 'newer' one!

I saw rivers edge so many times back then, it really was representing my generation. A friend from California told me it was based on a true story that happened near his home town.

If it comes to dark teen drama 'Thirteen' should have made it to the top 5. Specially since its script was loosely based on real life events and written by a teenager.
