Top 10 Hardest Broadway Songs

video description

Rating: 4.0; Vote: 1
Don't try and sing these at home. For this list, we'll be ranking the most challenging and difficult songs featured within big time Broadway shows. These songs could be considered hard based upon how fast they are, how many words are included in a quick phrase, or the presence of some sort of stratospheric high note. Regardless, these songs are the property of only the most talented and seasoned Broadway performers. Our list includes Dear Evan Hansen, Dreamgirls, The Phantom of the Opera, Into the Woods, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, and more! Join MsMojo as we count down our picks for the Top 10 Hardest Broadway Songs. 10. Words Fail 9. And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going 8. Rainbow High 7. The Phantom of the Opera 6. Confrontation 5. Kiss Me 4. Giants in the Sky 3, 2 & 1?

Unpopular opinion: honestly I think that Words Fail should have been higher on the list because Evan is such a hard character to portray with all of his little ticks and his anxiety, and when he is singing Words Fail his world is crashing down around him and hes crying and freaking out and the acting is impeccable and despite all of this it is sung so clearly.
Also HOW IS DEFYING GRAVITY AN HONOURABLE MENTION
Also does Ms Mojo have a thing with Phantom? Every time it has to be placed higher then they put it

I think this only takes into account the actual song and its stand alone difficulty, instead of the song in context. For example, the phantom of the opera is an incredibly difficult song, but in performance it is tracked! Christine doesnt have to sing that high E 8 times a week! Whereas words fail in itself is not a particularly hard song, but in context, the actor playing Evan had spent the entire scene before it shouting his lungs out, so the song then becomes very difficult.

half of these songs are only hard because they're high. a song being high doesn't mean it's hard, it just means it's written for a soprano or tenor. any alto song would be equally hard for a soprano to sing. the real difficult songs in broadway have challenging rhythms, large vocal leaps, or just genuinely difficult singing like requiring a lot of breath support or moving in between registers.

okay, i mean yeah Candide was on Broadway, but it's not a musical. every other song on this list is musical theatre. Glitter and Be Gay is an aria. it's from an operetta. frankly it shouldn't even be compared to all the other songs because it's a pretty simple aria for coloratura sopranos. obviously comparing it to a completely different vocal style is going to make it sound insanely difficult

My list in no particular order (my opinion)
Don't try and list if you don't care about theatre. (Ms mojo)
Defying gravity
Phantom of the opera
Memory
And I'm telling you
So much better
Getting married today
Dead girl walking
Gethsemane
Bring him home
All you wanna do
Wishing you were some how here again

I'm shocked that Giants in the Sky got higher than The Phantom of the Opera. My theatre group is having auditions for Mary poppins junior and Into the woods junior in August (most of the cast members are in middle school and high school) and I am using Giants in the sky as my audition song. I am female: )
reply

and i am telling you is easily the hardest song on broadway. not only do you have to have the voice, but to be able to belt that much in a manner that doesn't destroy your voice, AND to have the lung capacity to do so, makes it literally impossible for most people
reply

How the heck was Bring Him Home only in the honourable mention? I'm a girl, and can sing quite high if I really try, and I STILL struggle with that song (from the 1987 album of course. A man singing it is something I can't even fathom, yet he still does it.
reply

I'm Breaking Down from Falsettos should have been at least an honourable mention. You need to balance the acting, the comedic timing, and the strong belts, WHILE EATING A BANANA ON STAGE. I still don't know how anyone could do it eight times a week
reply

I know very little about musical theater but it feels sort of wrong that 'i am telling you' is number 9. It's the sort of song you can sing with technical perfection and still not hit. And the technical perfection is no joke either.
reply

Phantom of the Opera shouldve been number one. They cant even sing it live during performances because of the damage it can cause if sung in every performance. Instead they have to lip sync to the audio of them singing it.
reply

It requires the lead to step into the shoes of Hansen and create a musical document of one man's crumbling mental state, guilt, and anxiety.
Me: That's the summary of me.
(I feel like I do it somewhat well)

reply

I think the song Climb Every Mountain from The Sound Of Music should be on this listyou have to have like an opera singing voice to hit those high notes and be able hold them.
reply

Ok sure fine. But take a breath and go is not the proper technique. So you're giving countless amounts of people the wrong information
Also there's no Hamilton so byeeeee

reply

Guns and ships is not that hard compared to not getting married today. Guns and ships is like 45 seconds. Not getting married to today is 3 minutes of insane breath control
reply

Personally, I think A Little Fall of Rain is much more musically challenging than Bring Him Home, which is very melodic, builds evenly and almost any Tenor can sing it.
reply

love phantom of the opera, the theme alone has high notes. I was and still am able to sing that song.
I'm sad that it has unfortunately been taken off Broadway.

reply

Seriously? Gethsemane gets just an honorable mention? Have you ever tried it? It is a Behemoth of a song! Low, High, holding, that freaking Falsetto? Come on!
reply

It took me months to master the super tricky high note of the Phantom of the Opera back when I was 14. I don't know if I can still do it now. Hopefully I can.
reply

Rent's la boheme should have gotten at least an honorable mention. It's sung fast and has parts where multiple people sing different parts at the same time.
reply

In Phantom of the Opera, they have to use a voiceover recording of the final note to not damage the singer's voice. It's THAT difficult.
reply

Not sure if it should be on the main list, but Fugue for Tinhorns from Guys and Dolls should at least be an honorable mention
reply

okay Watch What Happens shouldve at least been an honorable mention! you need SERIOUSSSSS breath support for that song!
reply

two songs that should be here #1 my shot #2 guns and ships. It broke the world record for fastest lyrics sung
reply

Funny enough, i sang Phantom of the opera both parts by myself (Im a CounterTenor) and trust me, IT'S FREAKING HARD
reply

Pity the Child #2. yes, so damn difficult. Meant to be sung as a rock singer. On Broadway, Philip Casnoff nailed it.
reply

Omg defying gravity is not an honerable mention its one if the hardest songs asppesially near the end
reply

Watch What Happens from Newsies? Anyone? No? Really? You've got to be kidding that song is so hard to sing!
reply

santa fe shoukd toltaly be on that list its way harder then word fail believe me iv preformed them both
reply
