I was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer when I was 26. Everything happened so fast, I didnt even have time to get a wig before my hair started falling out. I walked around bald for almost a year before I had a full head of hair again. Its been 6 years now, and Im living life, blissfully, cancer free. Six years ago I had a fully booked and paid vacation to Disney World that I was very excited for. My doctor said I had to cancel, now in 2 weeks Im finally making that trip happen. Sometimes the route were on gets detoured, but eventually we make it to our destination. Im extremely grateful for the doctors, and more importantly the nurses, that saved me. While the doctors made the plans, ordered the treatments, performed the many surgeries, the nurses were the ones holding my hand. They waited on me hand and foot during chemo, they kept me calm and safe.
Ps A Million Little Things should be higher on the list. Not only does it deal with men getting breast cancer, but it also deals with young women getting it. I know there are other mentions on the list with young women, but this show handles everything so well.

Cold-cap therapy is expensive (not covered by insurance, painful, and doesn't work well to prevent hair-loss during chemo, which is its only purpose. Otherwise, it's a great idea and I'm so glad Jane the Virgin spent time advertising it to the masses (no pun intended.
In my experience, none of these shows did anything to show what it's like to be a breast-cancer patient.

I found it very ironic that in Beverly Hills 90210, that Shannen Doherty's character of Brenda Walsh found a lump in her breast while doing a self-examination and the years later Shannen would find one in her breast by the same means, leading to a breast cancer diagnosis, after a fan of the show reminded her of that episode

For me, it was always daytime soap operas that handled cancer storylines with the most grace. One Life To Live for example did a great job with Viki's breast cancer storyline; and General Hospital's story of Monica's cancer was famously well done.

I liked how they tackled breast cancer in Arthur with Mrs MacGrady, and depicted how each character deals with her illness. It was a gently poignant way to address the topic with younger viewers, and they handled it extremely well, in my opinion.

Ooooooh. I am surprised that you didnt touch on how the prime time soap Dallas handled the topic early on, and the woman who portrayed the Ewing matriarch, Barbara Abel Geddes, also had breast cancer herself.

Something thats extremely sad is Chicago Med tackled Maggie Lockwood having breast cancer and then several years later, Marlyne Barrett announced shes battling uterine and ovarian cancer.

the most pwerful scene is when kristina braverman tells her family she has cancer. during the scene, they played music and only showed the faces of the family as they heard the news.

I'm pretty sure Mrs. MacGrady had a breast cancer diagnosis and they didn't say it because it was a kid show but they handled it so perfectly and with a lot of sensitivity.

How in the world did you not include the storyline of Dallas where Ellie Ewing had breast cancer and had to have a mastectomy and worried how Jock would treat her afterwards

My mom is going through breast cancer as well. But thanks to the kind doctors, friends, god, and family, she's expected to make a full recovery. NEVER give up hope.

How could you not include the Wendy vs. Cartman episode of South Park. Is it because it didn't really deal with breast cancer. It just dealt with the awareness of it
reply

I was so glad you guys included Brenda's cancer scare on 90210, especially because it hits even harder now with Shannen Doherty's actual diagnosis.

The Arthur episode The Great MCGrady is an episode you forgot to mention. I applaud PBS Kids for how they discussed this topic in their show.

The South Park episode Breast Cancer show ever shouldve been on this list, showing how Wendy fought for Breast Cancer
reply

Steph from The Fosters had a great story of accepting having breast cancer and having her breast removed
reply

Ugh, Smith shaved his head for Samantha and they didn't even end up together. I never watched S&TC again.

Yall are missing Arthur, when Ms. MacGrady has Breast Cancer. I lauded the show for tackling that issue.
