I guess I'm the only one whose going to ask 'What about The Wiz'? Sometimes it annoys me that nowadays more people seem to have heard of 'Wicked' than 'The Wiz' even though 'The Wiz' came first. If no on here has heard of it do yourselves a favour - listen to the original soundtrack from the 70s, watch the 70s Motown movie adaption (the stage version has Oz chiefly as the magical land we saw in the books and movie of 'The Wizard of Oz', the movie version made Oz basically a fantasy version of New York, and the 2015 live filmed version of 'The Wiz', you won't regret watching any of those three versions. The main problem with it is that after listening to SPOILER:
the scarecrows songs in 'the Wiz' (originally he had a song called 'I was born on the day before yesterday' which is a I don't have much but I know this time I'm going to make it song, in the movie and the live action TV movie his song was 'you can't win' which is what the Crows who eat the corn in the field he's supposed to be protecting make him sing whenever he starts reading the famous quotes in his stuffing or starts talking too much about getting off his pole and walking) it makes it harder for me to like 'Dancing Through Life' as much as I used to - it used to be my favourite song from 'Wicked' but now it just makes me think of a rich kid with set future not taking anything seriously because he was born into comfort and makes me think of the lines 'I had holes in my shoes and I was crying the blues and I didn't have no place to stay' from 'I was Born on The day before yesterday' from the OBC of 'The Wiz' and the line 'You'll be spending your little bit of money while someone else rides for free' from 'You Can't Win' from the movie and live tv 'The Wiz'.

Boooo! I was hoping you'd make comparisons between the book and Wicked. In all honesty, Wicked makes no sense if we're talking about the book. Glenda wouldn't even really be who she is at all to even make her role relevant. I wish people would go into detail about how the book was developed based on the Chicago World's Fair and the issues the world was facing during the upcoming Progressive Era. Most people are so ignorant about the original book, they pass it off as a simple book for kids. It's actually more complex than Wicked when you consider what each character is supposed to represent. To be honest, Wicked is the simplest story about a girl who feels like an outcast and empowers herself. When haven't we heard that story before? The first Wizard of Oz movie adaptation did little to highlight Baum's story. The Wiz did a better job than both adaptations. Wizard of Oz film just had technicolor, which was amazing for its time. READ THE BOOKS.

I mean I get where people say that 'Wicked' is an empowering story about a woman rather than about a man, I do and it's great that they do that and the friendship story between Galinda and Elphaba is touching. But I also get it when people point out that women have always been empowered in 'the Wizard of Oz' - both in the book series and in the movie the man in power was all smoke and mirrors while the women (the good and bad witches from all four corners) were always the ones with real power, and the other men in the story (the lion, the tin man, the scarecrow) were each held back by something and were able to find what was holding them back thanks to Dorothy.

Amazing that. I have lived to see the Story of Oz, Dorothy, the most powerful female Characters in film, stage, and literature continue on to the next 85 - 100 years. Wicked is not just the back story /prequel of the Wizard of Oz. through its beautiful music. much like Judy Garland emotional over the Rainbow. WICKED tells an equally moving and sweet story about friendship, love, and respect beyond color or race. THE WIZARD OF OZ and Wicked. bookend eachother. with maybe room for. THE GREAT AND POWERFUL OZ movie fitting right in the middle. We can all love these great pieces of great cinema that would even include THE WIZ! The

I wonder if, as time goes on and people start to forget which came first, the Wizard of Oz and Wicked will start to blend together culturally into one Oz-verse. It'll be like how people who know the original Lewis Carroll books will get frustrated with how adaptations base material off both Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass; at a certain point, only geeks will remember which was which.
- It's already happening to Maleficent. People love Angelina's portrayal so much that they forget how she was a stereotypical villain who DIED in Sleeping Beauty.

I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. (Luke 13: 5)
But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. (Isaiah 64: 6)
As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. (Romans 3: 10-12)

Sometimes I wonder if they can really be compared because they're really two different stories with a few similarities - they're more closely connected than 101 Dalmatians and Cruella though (for the record I love both and the same applies to Wicked vs Wizard of Oz. Though I guess the main point is that they're both good stories that are told well and both deserve the praise they've been given and that that's all that's important.

Wicked definitely. I saw the Leicester production of wizard of oz and it was too cheesy and so fast pace you couldnt really get to kno the characters. But wicked completely flips things over therefor you get to see the story and darkness of certain characters. I love the wizard of film but it should stay a film but wicked is suited for the stage because it has the right balance of dark humour and magic

The Wizard Of Oz is a very classic, iconic movie, but its kind of random and just seems like the plot is doing whatever it wants the entire movie. But Wicked explains all of that, how the flying monkeys got their wings, why all of the Wizard Of Oz characters need what they go to the wizard to ask for, and why her and Glinda are the way they are. So in my opinion, Wicked has to take the win.

Wizard was great. Saw it on TV of course as a kid. Still enjoy watching it. But, Wicked is my fave. The national touring company just started in Dallas. I saw it 3 times. Could have seen it more. 40 performances- almost all sold out. 120, 000 saw it while it was here. It is truly one for the ages on so many levels. Will always be timely. As someone else commented, Wizard is a classic.

PLEASE! Apples and oranges! Why does everything have to be a competition? They're both wonderful, each in its own way. I like to think of them as part of a trilogy: Wicked as the prequel, then Wizard of Oz, then the lesser known Tin Man (set in a generations-later time period where, like in our own time, Oz became a lot more technologically evolved. Everybody wins.
reply

Well hell, I myself could write a misunderstood-based musical called White Witch of White Magic or some shit like that, but it still wouldn't be the same as the actual story of 'Narnia' alone.
No matter how popular and fan-fiction it would or wouldn't be lol. Boldly and Psychologically. it just wouldn't be the same.

reply

Nothing will ever be as amazing as the original, no comparison, specially looking at the advancement of technology (ect) wizard of oz will never be forgotten dispite the lack of all new technology and the fact color had only just come to tv at the time, wicked is great, but the wizard of oz will always be the greatest
reply

I wish they could somehow make a sequel to Wicked, since Wicked is a prequel to the Wizard Of Oz, it could possibly be a sequel to Dorothy and Elphaba's story.
Probably a story about forgiveness and cooperation.
But on the other hand, it would be one confusing story don't you think?
Or am I wrong maybe.

reply

I don't really see the point of pitting the two amazing creations against each other? I would just have loved to see all the different things that makes you think differently about TWOO after seeing Wicked. or something. or why wicked became so. popular, hehe. Anyway, unnecessary to pit it.
reply

I love them both they have both very good stories. I absolutely love them both. For me its a ruby slipper tie because I love both Wizard of Oz and Wicked. They are both so good, and I cant wait to see the film version of Wicked when it comes out so I can watch them back to back.
reply

Ive never cared for wicked! Its basically a greying of the original and if you follow the main character shes very tragic villain. She got more and more bitter till she was surrounded by flying monkeys and got melted by a bucket of water. Not exact a girl to be admired!
reply

Saw Wicked on Broadway in 2009. When it started I wasnt enjoying it because I was trying to figure out how it tied into the Wizard of Oz movie. It was only in the middle of the play did I figure out it was a political comedy rather than a part of the original story.
reply

You know I love to compare the moment that led up to Dorothy throwing the bucket of water onto the witch between the original Frank Balm book of the early 1900s, the 1939 film, the original wicked book published in 1995, and the Broadway musical
reply

Comparing elphaba and Dorothy is obscure and ridiculous all together. Wicked is better than the wizard of oz because individuals of disabilities can relate to that story more than the shity wizard of oz.
reply

In total, i found Wicked music unmemorable. I wanted to like it but it's nothing compared to Miss saigon, Westside story, Phantom of the opera, etc. It's comparable to Lala land which was a big nothing.
reply

I feel like the Wizard of Oz is too cliche (dont get me wrong it was my childhood) but Wicked opened my eyes about the villains like every villain had a backstory wether happy or tragic
reply

I am so glad that people in the comments think that Wicked is so much better than Wizard of Oz. I read the book Wicked and I just couldn't see how Wizard of Oz got so many points to begin with
reply

The Wicked novel actually goes into a lot more detail than the show does. Theres a lot more to Fiyero and Elphabas relationship than the stage production shows and its really interesting
reply

Wicked is the winner for me. I just feel a lot more emotions watching it than I do the Wizard of Oz. Ngl I actually really like the Wizard of Oz but wicked is just a whole other level
reply

Every villain was once an innocent character at one point something dramatic or trauma had to make them change into villains and we got the infamous villains fact's
reply

The Wizard of Oz is a total classic. I never read the books. Wicked the musical was spectacular. Wicked the book is awful. It is so poorly written i struggled to finish it.
reply

Isnt wicked kinda basically like the beginning of the wizard of oz cause it basically tells the story of the wicked witch well before she was evil and before Dorothy came
reply

I may be very wrong but Im sure wickeds Thank Goodness is a take on Ding dong the witch is dead with the same hook and One Short Day is a take on Merry Old land of Oz
reply

Do you actually stop and think that Wicked is like the unseen scenes from the original Wizard of Oz after Judy Garland disappeared from one scene to another?
