These are the BEST Musicals of the 1990s! Forget house music and grunge, were looking back at the 90s for a completely different reason, for this list. Were looking at our favourite musicals that made their Broadway debut in the 90s like Sunset Boulevard and The Lion King, and while many classic musicals such as Chicago and Cabaret had revivals in this time, were specifically focusing on shows that paying audiences first saw on the Great White Way between 1990 and 1999. Join MsMojo as we count down our picks for the top 10 Broadway Musicals of the 1990s!

Once again Lion King tops Ragtime and it's just A CRIME. The Lion King musical peaks with excitement in the first number and then it's a bore the rest of the night. A nice to look at bore but they never reach the same heights as they do in the first song. Ragtime is a balanced work of genius that weaves a ton of plot and characters into one of the most heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time shows about race and class difference and the dreams this nation was built upon.
However. BIG PROPS to giving Hedwig the credit it deserves.

I was surprise not to see Aida which is another musical By Tim Rice and Elton John which had Disney backing into possibly a movie I'm glad to see Titantic make it as an honorable mention. I had to explained to people that the musical is not based on the movie and that the musical came out a few months before the movie did. My community theatre did both Aida and Titantic which I was ensemble for both.

If Rent hadn't been #1, there would be riots. It is easily in my top five musicals, and it's only depending on my mood if it shares the top spot with Cats or surpasses it. Part of why the musical meant so much was the tragic death of Jonathon Larson the night before it premiered. It will NEVER be fair that he didn't get to see the impact he made.

I saw the filmed Julie Andrews performance of Victor Victoria on Valentines Day 2014! And have seen four incarnations of Rent. First the 2005 movie, the 20th anniversary Non-Equity tour, the 2008 closing night performance and the Fox TV performance. No hard feelings by the way about what happened with the guy that played Roger.

The Lion King was my first Broadway that I went to see when I was around five to six years old in the spring of 2003 at the New Amsterdam Theatre in New York. That show is the reason why Ive been doing theatre for the last sixteen years and the reason why Ive been a fan of Elton John.

Of course Sunset Boulevard won Best Musical. It was only against TWO OTHER SHOWS that both closed because that year was a disaster on Broadway. There were only three new musicals nominated that year because THAT'S ALL THAT QUALIFIED.
reply

Wow. No Once On This Island, Kiss of the Spiderwoman or Parade to be found ANYWHERE. I mean, it's all subjective but still. You'll throw a bone to Sunset Blvd and Victor/Victoria, but not even an honorable mention to those three?

Do musicals that were never on Broadway count? If so, then Bat Boy! It's not super mainstream, but it had its world premiere in LA in '97. If you like dark, yet somewhat ridiculous cult musicals, it's definitely one for you!

When You think of a 90's musical you think Of rent. But for me It is Jekyll and Hyde. The score to me is just a pure 90's baled, lol and I have done the show when I was 18, in the mid 2008.

I see Rent, I'm instantly hooked! It's THE most iconic musical of the 1990's, and its themes are still relevant today. The infamous 2019 live TV remake isn't a patch on the original!

I fell in love with RENT early this year, and it's gotten me through some really tough times. It's message is so beautiful: Love is such a powerful thing, and live in the moment.

Hedwig is one of the BEST MOVIES I'VE EVER SEEN. And I watched it when I was 12 or 13.
The Origin of Love is that kind of song that remains with through time.

Is it bad for the most part I end up hearing the glee versions of these songs (like pinball wizard, as if we never said goodbye & le jazz hot)
reply

Wait. what about Phantom of the Opera, Starlight Express, Joseph and the Dreamcoat? They were all within that timeline I believe and of course. Cats!
reply

Too bad Sideshow didnt get an honorable mention at least! The late 90s were a great time for musicals with Jekyl and Hyde, Ragtime and Lion king.
reply

SO happy victor/victoria is on the list! it's such an underrated show (but of course, I'm not surprised Beauty and the Beast made the list)
reply

How on Earth did, Hedwig, make it to #5, while, Beauty and the Beast, was only #6? I guess some people prefer racket over a classic.
reply

Please do one about the 80s!
So many great musicals came out then! Les Mis, Miss Saigon, Cats, Dreamgirls, Into the Woods, and Phantom!

reply

Hedwig And The Angry Inch And Falsettos should be higher but im still glad that Rent is #1. thats just my opinion so please dont kill me.
reply

Scarlet Pimpernel is so underrated! We did it my junior year of HS (the revived edition not the original) and i fell in love with it
reply

Related but slightly of topic - I miss the Rosie ODonnell Show for its promotion of Broadway and Off Broadway productions
reply

I would have put The Secret Garden, Kiss of the Spiderwoman, and Parade in the top 10 or under honorable mentions.
reply

just started the video, if rent isnt #1, we are going to have a problem.
Edit: Im not disappointed: )

reply

Songs for a New World and Kiss of the Spider Woman should have been in the honorable mentions at least
