I always have trouble with Charlize Therons name, in that I want to pronounce the TH as a hard T, like in Thomas. Soirse (or however its spelled) is impossible! Even when she says it, I cant understand it! That it rhymes with inertia is somewhat helpful, but Shersha isnt a particularly pretty name, IMO. Ive known women named Siobhan who have simplified it by spelling it Anglican, Shovonne or Shavonne. Its a pretty name, and I actually like the Irish spelling. Not to offend anyone, but Ive never liked the name Ralph as we Americans pronounce it; but I like the pronunciation Rafe. I guess no matter how a first or last name is spelled, the pronunciation is essentially how the person who has the name chooses to pronounce it! A good example of this is the last name Kerr, which is pronounced a number of different ways by different Kerrs, such as actress Deborah Kerr (Kar, celebrity chef Graham Kerr (Kare) and my friend Bill, who pronounces itKerr (Kur!

It so happens because you all are using an alphabet that was
specifically created for LATIN language the tonge of ancient Rome, and
it suits the sounds of that language and now the languages that directly
descend from it, i. e. italian, spanish and romanian. in a lesser extent
portugese, french and in the case of german it is also very suited to
this tonge because the phonemes of that germanic laguage adapt perfectly
to the latin alfabet by sheer chance. the rest of the languages that
use the latin alphabet have to do very weird adaptations to use it and
that's why by the letters alone you can never be sure of the
pronunciation of a word.

Although not a celeb, I feel their pain. My married name is Fahel. The ACTUAL pronunciation (it's Filipino) is fah-HEEL. We pronounce it FAY-hell. Some people pronounce it Fail. which is not an option. When someone like a salesperson or bill person calls, it's always, Is this Karen Faaah. ayayay at which time I interrupt with Yes. Don't hurt yourself. When they ask me how I pronounce it, I say, My father-in-law pronounced it three different ways in one afternoon. so I'm not picky.

UzoAmaka Aduba; Chiwetel Eljiofor; David Kaluuya; Lupita Nyong'O;
Amandla Steinberg; Belcalis Almanzar; Kellendra Rowland; Onicka Maraj; Djimon Honsou; Q'Orianka Kilcher; Joseph Jason Namakaeah Momoa; Taika Waititi; I could go on. None of these on the list, except 1 honourable mention, were actual names of colour of talent in Hollywood. Names that are actually difficult to pronounce. Such a whitewashed list.

reply

What? Really? What about Chiwetel Ejiofor or David Oyelowo? Lupita Nyongo? Awkafina, Ava DuVernay, Uzo Aduba and Issa Rae? Or is this the white washed version? Because Im pretty sure these talented men and women have their names mispronounced WAY MORE than Amanda Seyfried and Jake Gyllenhaal.

Saoirse is honestly easy for me and I've known for ages, but that could just be because I'm a big fan of hers and get a bit tired of people in interviews asking her about it. There were a couple in the honorable mentions that I didn't know how to pronounce, otherwise I knew them all.

Most people say Rihanna's name wrong. People tend to pronounce the first A like on. But I remember in an interview years ago she said it's supposed to be pronounced Ree-Anna. So the first A is like the A in can. But I think she gave up correcting people a long time ago.
reply

What - no Chiwetel Ejiofor or Lupita Nyong'o or Milo Ventimigilia or Chrissy Teigen? While I think the 'Old Hollywood' practice of renaming their stars was heinous & disrespectful. in some cases was kinda understandble.
reply

There's no right or wrong. U pronounce it how it makes sense to be pronounced in your country regarding the language. So a name has several ways of saying it according to what country u go to.

Both my daughter's names get mispronounced, alot.
My oldest daughter's name is Adaya, and I have heard multiple wired pronunciations.
A-die--a
Add-ya
It is pronounced A-day-a.

reply

It is bad when someone has a Croatian or Serbian name with a C in it and people kept saying it with a K sound. Both languages have 3 different C letters and none of them have the K sound.
reply

Ok but you pronounced Gal Gadot's first name wrong. The a is pronounced like in ahhhh. is the Hebrew word for wave, like on the sea. And there's no flat a sound in Hebrew.
reply

I could've sworn I read somewhere that Charlize's name is supposed to be pronounced They-ron. I feel so deceived. I had actually been pronouncing it right all along.
reply

Gal Gadot: You messed that up completely. Listen to the woman. No diphtongization of the 'o'' just a straight, open vowel, as in 'dot' but not americanized to an 'ah'
reply

If number one isnt Gabourey Sidibe or Chiwetel Ejiofor I stand by thoughts that MsMojo is one of the most ridiculously one side piece of garbage on the Internet.

The final E in Scorsese should be pronounced like the E in last name of Ariana Grande. The same is for Sylvester Stallone, is Stallone and not Stallon
reply

Charlize Theron uses a American way of saying her name to make it easier for people to pronunciate. The proper way in Afrikaans sound a lot different.
reply

I'm sorry but you mispronounced all of the italian last names.
E in italian is ALWAYS pronounced E. Scorsese himself is pronouncing it wrong

reply

reply

Chrissy Tiegen's name is pronounce Chrissy Tie-gen (like a 'tie' a knot. She said it in an interview. I've been saying that one wrong!

Haute is pronounced exactly like OAT with silent H. A tiny bit if research wouldve cleared that right up for you. Duh.
reply

And I won't apologize for pronouncing Italian based names the Italian way. Which e. g. makes Buscemi 'bushemi'
reply

Let me guess, Chiwetel Ejiofor isn't on this list because you also have absolutely no idea how to pronounce his name!
reply

I know someone who grew up with Charlize and her family identify as Tirrawn, the SA way. She has changed it herself.
reply

If this was a list about celebrities names spelled wrong, Benedic Cumberbatch would probably be number one.
