Marie Adler's story is truly unbelievable. First it was an article, then it was a book, and now the story is getting widespread attention on Netflix. For this list, were looking at all the things in Netflixs Unbelievable miniseries that are absolutely true, such as Marie Adler being charged with filing a false report, Marie suing Lynwood, Rasmussen and Duvall being based on real detectives, and more. A spoiler notice for the show is definitely in order

Excellent story, excellent performance, excellent cast, excellent production and excellent case of justice prosecuted for hard effort. But it also has errors, some scenes are quite exaggerated like the way they ask for the version again in the hospital when in cases of rape doctors work with the police report and other moments along the mini series. Also, according to the series Marie changes the version of events several times before talking to the police, while talking to the police and after going to the police with her advisers again. It was the fault of the police for not having a psychiatrist and the people who did not believe in her too, but it could be said that she made a mistake there supposedly for trauma. Lastly, they recognized it and MsMojo also mentioned it, a high dose of feminism and hatred against men was added, literally only three male characters ended up being good or useful throughout the mini series and there were many moments of female emotion. I'm not saying this is wrong since it is obvious that the objective of this series is to empower women but they did to much with the degenerative parodies towards men and thats something that men dont deserve because there is cases of woman lying about raping as well.

my mother was a rape victim that luckily became a survivor and i got to know a support group of other victims and the way to cops and detectives responded and treated this character( well the real Mary) is SADLY how MANY victims are treated. They don't believe you, try to make you admit it didn't happen, question why you didn't you get help sooner, why didn't you tell this person why that person, & why won't you tell us certain details, how do you not remember, how and why are you confused. you didn't remember this detail then but you remember it now why didn't you fight back harder if youdidn't give consent ect. And people and bystanders treated them EXACTLY like this. The people that care tend to be the cruelest. I truly hate but appreciate how accurate and realistic this show was. It touched down hard on many issues in just a few episodes. Also My prayers to Marie, survivors and victims. NO-ONE should EVER be put through this. You are all such a strong and brave people( I didn't specify women specifically because men fall victim as well and I feel like this should be acknowledged) & I commend her for sharing her pain, sadness, and trauma.

The foster moms decided what Marie said was untrue based on her reaction ( which was basically tumultuous one day she was trying to be normal the next feeling sad, fearful, panicked, triggered ), they were so ignorant of psychology and assumed a lot of things which is bad enough but to the extent of calling up the detective and informing him about her past behaviour, seriously. The only thing they had to do was know their ignorance and limits and have patience to just listen to her. All they had to do. Instead they did what most older women do assume they know what the younger generation is going through according to their limited vision and their own story and pass judgements. For me this is the single turning point in Marie Adlers life. After that she just stopped trusting not only everyone, the system that had failed her again and again but also herself. Imagine being let down a million times by parents, foster parents, social care workers, police, rise up community. Guardian angels that came to change her mind about life was the turning point for peace of her mind. Interestingly both those turning points were women.

Binged this entire show lastnight was up until around 4am. I could not stop watching it I had to see if they put things right with Marie. Some things hit a little too close to home like people not believing you and making you think you are lying too. That got me very upset because I forgot about it. I am really happy she got some kind of justice at the end and that somone let her know that they believed her. The damage those two cops managed to inflict on her was staggering. No instinct at all. Though I am not surprised either. Most people dont want to understand or deal with rape because its so sinister. Amazing acting from everyone they were all very believable. I dont think I could sit through it a 2nd time though its a bit too real for me.

The Caccon House in Lynnwood has written on their website: Breaking the cycle of homelessness. But with their behavior they actually contributed to the opposite: Not believing the victim, isolating her, making the rules three times more strict for her, reminding her everyday that she screwed up. They made an already very vulnerable person even more vulnerable. I know they thought they were holding her accountable but I just can't wrap my head around the fact that none of those social workers questioned the situation. No one thought of the fact that false rape reports are extremely rare. No one entertained the idea that maybe something else was going on. I'm glad the real Marie sued them. I hope they learned from their mistakes.

I watched this series twice. Its excruciating to watch the scenes w/ these old men interrogate a very young, insecure RAPE victim in the 2000's! Not the 1940's or 50's. It's like they've never seen an episode of Law & Order SVU. It was hard to believe that these male detectives had ZERO training on how to treat a RAPE VICTIM. Would they treat their mother, sister, daughters like that if they were Raped? The acting & writing are so on point they got it right! The way those male detectives victimized the victim was very cruel to watch. I hope she is doing well in life and wish Marie many many blessings. She's a survivor and should be admired.

While i understand where the detectives were coming from in questioning the validity of her statement, i dont understand why they didnt think to analyse why she would falsely report about a rape without a single suspect. what's worse is that there was DNA evidence all over the scene. how does someone miss something like that! As detectives they should know that people process things differently. they were quite shallow tbh if she really did give a false report why would she take back her statement and change it again another time. they definitely didn't do their jobs well

I am so glad this story does have a half-way happy ending, and this nasty person was caught. Well, not really happy, but at least he was caught. People like this man should not be given 2nd chances. Anyone who would sxally assault another person deserves to die in my opinion, or at least be locked up forever if not put to death. Especially, someone who would do that to a child, a 16 yo girl. That man deserves no pity in my honest opinion, and any man or woman like him deserves no pity. Just incase anyone wants to know, this sick pervert got 327 and a half years!

Marie is a remarkable person. She could have sued for millions but rather then take advantage of her mistreatment and use it as a excuse for greed she stood up with dignity and showed a level of integrity and character well in excess of that displayed by those who were supposed to stand by her, stand up for her and get paid to protect and defend her and the rest of us. I applaud her and hope she and her family live in uninterrupted happiness for the rest of her days. She truly is a person the rest of us should take lessons from.

I wonder what happened to the friend who made the hate site about Marie, the one that doxxed her and revealed her real name and where she lived. I wonder if she ever watched this show or ever heard that her friend really had been raped, I wonder how she feels about creating a hate site against a rape victim that opened Marie up to even further abuse. I wonder if she ever felt bad or regretted her actions or just went Well, whatever, she deserved everything that happened to her.

So now society has to provide him food, shelter, medical care, entertainment, and even education for the rest of his life. At a cost of about 3. 25 million dollars. Somehow, we call this justice. Ironically, his unconscionable acts have secured for him a better life than millions of homeless Americans can hope for. If there is no hope whatsoever that he might live long enough to be paroled, then shouldn't the death penalty replace his sentence?

Binged Unbelievable and came away 1) Amazed by the incredible acting of Wever, Collette and Dever. 2) Stunned the any rape victim would be interviewed by a man or men. The cases should be run by women with a back-up (perhaps a man. The procedural portion of this limited series is incredible. This shows how a real (good) police investigation is run and how much it matters to the detectives and officers working it.

This hits close to home. When all odds and evidence were against her she had to pivot and just live with the fact everybody thought she was lying. Same exact thing happened to me except with my friends. They accused me of lying and threatened to hurt me after and i never had a chance to defend myself so to this day I'm going through what she went through. Idk this is just sad.

LOVED this role for the lead actress. I remember her when she was in Bad Teacher. Funny, but this was a great role for her. I like the subtle way that they portray girl power in a way. It's not in your face. I hope Netflix will get with the program and stop ending great short series! Keep them going! Bring us a new season of something like this!
reply

I gotta say that the two actors playing the detectives when she reported the rape were outstanding. That's why everybody hated them!
They played the bad cops to the hilt!
I've seen this movie three times and it's because all the actors were truly great in their roles.

The police, the foster moms, and the friend should be ashamed of themselves. Peggy (Judith) should never foster any children in the future. And the police should never be in enforcement, and deserve jail time for abuse of power and misuse of tactics. Finally, $150k wasn't enough.

I wish there was more redemption for Marie at the end, like all those people that treated her like shit, and the friends she lost. I wish it wouldve showed their reactions etc. still, the real life Marie forgave her foster moms. And at least all those people know now.
reply

I want to see the reactions to everyone who doubted her when they finally know it was the truth and what they did after. Like what did the friend who backstabbed her do or felt. The foster mom who doubted her, etc. thats what Im curious about.
reply

That friend that turned on her, if you see this: I hope you never have peace or rest. You are disgusting and I hope that you never have to endure her pain. This shame will stay with you for the rest of your life and I hope it weighs on you.
reply

My biggest fear, above anything else, is having people not believe me. It's going through the same thing that Marie went through. It broke me when no one believed her and everyone turned on her. Im having a hard time getting past episode 2.
reply

They should have more women in charge of dealing with the rape. Like send a female officer to the scene. I would feel uncomfortable talking to those guys. Like Im not hating on men its just I would rather have a women questioning me
reply

People react to things differently and rape is a really traumatic experience so how dare they think she is lying just because she didnt react the way they think she should especially if they never been in her experience
reply

I went watching the whole series not knowing it was based on a true story. But I can't say that I'm surprised either about the injustice that happened to Marie I hope Marie is doing okay today and always will be.
reply

Just finished the series. inspiring the two detectives work, believing, and standing for the truth, and stellar detective work, working the details. Very moving, and just brilliant acting from all involved!
reply

Just imagine. if they had taken Marie seriously in the beginning, maybe none of the other rapes would have happened. Maybe they could have spared so many women from experiencing such horror
reply

i loved the show. but felt like every male character was portrayed as an idiot or worse, a rapist. I like to shout out to the two male authors that are the reason why marie's story is heard.
reply

Unbelievable was absolutely amazing. Me and my mom both watched it apart from each other and were absolutely blown away. It is a really heavy theme but they just told it in a phenomenal way!
reply

and this is why there are so many people who don't report it. while cops are charging victims for false reports the ones who truly lie get away with it. so disgusting. we need to do better
reply

the part that makes me the most upset is that she settled for 150, 000$ when its obvious she could have gotten a lot more. but she was young at the time, probably thought that was enough.
reply

I thought she was lying in the show thats what Netflix said and the description now that I know it's true that description didn't tell me the whole thing I'm going to go watch it thank u
