These are the most ICONIC Broadway Musical villains, because let's be honest, no story is complete without a great villain. For this list, well be looking at evil Broadway characters who we love to hate, from Macavity in Cats, to Judge Turpin from Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (1979. Were excluding anti-heroes, so characters like Javert from Les Misrables wont appear on this list. Join MsMojo as we count down our picks for Top 10 Broadway Musical Villains!

overall solid list! Other good choices that should have made it:
Gleb (Anastasia) (although I could see a debate for him being an anti-hero)
Thuy (Miss Saigon)
Mayor Dobbs (Bright Star)
Farquaad (Shrek)
Regina George (Mean Girls)
Hyde (Jekyll and Hyde)
SQUIP (Be More Chill)
Hades (Hadestown)
Pullitzer (Newsies)

Listennn
I played Audrey 2 in my high school musical
Mannnn that role is so much fun and probably my greatest role I ever got
I got to act all malicious and evil and sing with all soul and blues
Everything I want in a villain
Best part was I wasnt even on the stage
I got special treatment lmao

Had a feeling Audrey 2 would be number 1 and am glad to see that Miss Trunchbull got an HM. I am surprised there is no mention of Madame Morrible or Oz from Wicked, as they are the true villains of the story.
reply

I'm not convinced at all that the Thenardiers are the villains in Les Mis. Javert is technically the villain.
And as for Bill Sykes and Nancy - Nancy is his girlfriend, not his wife.

Went to see Aladdin on Broadway as my first show in New York and It was so awesome realizing that the voice actor for Jafar plays him in the Broadway show
reply

I didn't expect lsoh to be on the list cuz it wasn't broadway and if there was Orin Scrivello in the honorable mentions but I got so happy at 1 Audrey II is iconic
reply

Mrs. Greene from the Prom has recently become a favorite of mine, because of how realistic she is. So many homophobic witches in the world, just like her.
reply

I am gonna admit. while I knew it would be little shop of horrors I kinda expected it to be the dentist not the plant. as both qualified
reply

You should have mentioned that Jonathan Freeman (who voiced Jafar) also plays Jafar in the original Broadway production of Aladdin.
reply

I'm surprised Kristen chenowith has not yet played miss hanigannn. Also, miss trunchbull, an honorable mention! Come on Ms mojo

In the 2007 Sweeney Todd film, we got Snape, Bellatrix, Young and Old Grindellwald And Peter Pettigrew all in the same film
reply

Curly is as much of a villain as Jud Fry if you stick to the original script. The song Lonely Room is heartbreaking.
reply

I'm glad that velma von tussle and miss hannigan is in this list my 2 favorite villianess women because they are funny
reply

Im confused on why you consider the odd couple from Les Mis a villain but not the actual villain of the production
reply

Y'all need to dig deeper in your Broadway videos and stop including Disney movie to stage adaptations. Argh.
reply

ok i thought number one was going to be terrible but they did it correctly and im proud of them for once.
reply

The entire cast of Pippin should have been on the list. Screw honorable mentions, I'm talking top 3 at least
reply

Yes! Macavity's on the list! I'm glad he was included, and I'm also glad you used the GOOD movie clips
reply
