These feminist Broadway songs are our jam. Well only be choosing the girl-power anthems that originated on stage, whether that be on Broadway, Off-Broadway, West End and so on. So, as much as we love Frozens Let It Go, thats a song for another list. You cant belt one of these out without feeling empowered. MsMojo ranks the best feminist Broadway songs. Whats your favorite feminist Broadway song?

She Used to be Mine isn't really a feminist song if I'm being honest. Jenna is basically singing about how she lost herself during her toxic marriage, and throughout her pregnancy. And how she would do anything to change up her past because of its impact on her future. (I would give it all back for a chance to start over, and re-write an ending or two) BUT I think everything changes should have at least made an honorable mention. Because this song is about Jenna making decisions for herself. Throughout the musical she's controlled by Earl, in almost every aspect. He thinks he has the rights to her money, body, time and the child she's carrying. But after she gives birth to Lulu, she manages to end the affair with Dr. Pomatter (kinda sad tbh) and leave Earl while threatening his life if he tries to come back to her.

I could add others, but it would sometimes be duplicating songs from the same show.
And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going could easily be here as well.
Burn is Eliza taking her story into her own hands.
Without You shows how Eliza has realized her power over Higgins. (good job putting even a snippet of it in the video)
The Simple Joys Of Maidenhood has Guenevere aching to get out of her royal birth.
Still, it's hard to beat a good Cell Block Tango or Schuyler Sisters.

I think I would have added Back to Before from 'Ragtime'. In my mind, there is NO anthem so moving and powerful as when Mother declares her independence from Father and sings about what she expected, once. and when she expects, now. 2 versions are amazing to me. One by the late Marin Mazzie, the original, and the original London version's, Maria Friedman. Huge performances and you absolutely get the message.

Other things to mention that dont specifically need to be on the list but I feel need to be known: Legally Blonde Remix, Six, Megasix, I dont need your love (part 2/after dialogue break, basically all of six and Coolest girl (AVPS)
Also Id rather be men deserved to be on the list instead of just a honourable mention

HOW IS ID RATHER BE ME A HONORABLE MENTION! The song is literally about Janis standing up in front of girls saying f u Im doing my own thing this is me you cant change that. Barrett sings one of the most influential song for women in broadway right now. Its literally a song about girl power.
reply

Forget About the Boy from Thoroughly Modern Millie didn't even get an honorable mention! I wish I had known that number, when a former friend was obsessed with Taylor Swift's We Are Never Getting Back Together (I just thought that was annoying, and not the Taylor Swift I knew and loved!
reply

So happy that Right Hand Man got on here! I love that song so much! Also, how is I'd Rather Be Me ONLY AN HONORABLE MENTION! that and Right Hand Man are LITERALLY the most FEMINIST SONGS I KNOW! still glad it's in this vid tho. i was gonna SCREAM if it wasn't.
reply

I think we've got different definitions of feminism. taking liberties with history & using violence as a solution is NOT feminist.
Especially considering what else is on here, it's a shame Buenos Aires is an honorable mention

Where's Ladies Who Lunch? Also I didn't expect Just A Housewife from Working to be on the list, because Working is criminally underrated but I was hoping it might get an honorable mention, it's such an amazing song.

I'm wondering how the classic Marry the Man Today (Guys&Dolls) might fit. It's really women plotting to create an inauthentic situation that may well backfire, but the show cuts off with a happy ending.
reply

When y'all specifically said you were acknowledging off-Broadway and West End I thought for sure I Say No from Heathers West End would be on here. But not even an honorable mention? What a shame
reply

Oh yesss cell block tango is sooo good and the Schulyer sisters! aaaaaah and defying gravity is just sooo spot on! and I am Changing is just sooo moving! And I love number one! It's such an anthem!
reply

i feel that i dont need your love is more feminist then get down because just look at the title and get down dosent require to hit a high note like the other songs but ok den
reply

Ok heard me out. Dead Girl Walking from Heathers. Like its all about women empowerment and a woman dominating instead of the stereotypical man leading. It just screams feminism to me.
reply

I really wish Id Rather Be Me was more than just an honorable mention. It is such an anthem for girls who feel like they are supposed to be submissive or supposed to stick to a stereotype
reply

This sounds odd but I feel like She Used To Be Mine could fit on here. It's about a woman fighting just a little to bring back the fire in her eyes and leave an abusive situation.
reply

I'd choose Everything I Know over It Won't Be Long Now, partly because I find Nina's character arc more empowering, and partly because Everything I Know is just a gorgeous song.
reply

That Back to Before from Ragtime is not on this list makes me sad. Its the end of Mothers journey to stepping away from what is expected to what she can be.
reply

My Top 5 are.
1. Astonishing
2. Defying Gravity
3. I am Changing
4. Im Here
5. So Much Better
Watch What Happens is not far behind,

One Single Step from Wendy the musical. It is a geogoeus song and features Tiger-Lily (Animal version) Singing to Wendy about feminisim essentially.
reply

Okay, but this list is missing a very crucial song if these songs are how you're defining feminism: Bring on the Men from Jekyll and Hyde.
reply

I wouldn't call cell block tango feminist. it's about a bunch of crazy women in prison who murdered their boyfriends
reply

Come From Away never gets enough credit. The last lines of Me and the Sky make me ugly cry EVERY time.
reply

Ngl I was expecting I dont need your love rather than get down. I feel the former is more feminist.
reply

Okay, I want to see the musical Six now. Probably won't happen for a long time what with the coronavirus.
reply

Defying Gravity may be #2 on this list, but it is my #1 self-empowerment, self-determination anthem.
