We love this show, but there are some things from Friends that make NO sense. For this list, were looking at some questionable things that happen in the show that still give us pause. Our countdown includes Emily marrying Ross, all the free time, Joey buying the boat, and more! MsMojo ranks the things from Friends that make zero sense. What do you think is Friends biggest plot hole?

With number 3 the narrator says does this building have any rules about animals and yes it's confusing because firstly when you meet Paulo he lives in their building Inna higher floor and the cat they find during the blackout is his. Also like the narrator points out Ross is forever bringing over Marcel. Then in the episode where Joey becomes Mr Treegers dance partner and he mentions the chick and the duck he then has to pretend they are hisbAnd Chandler's nicknames in the group as Treeger asks if they have pets Inna tone that suggests they aren't allowed to have them. Then later on Rachel buys the Sphinx cat. Phoebe also brings over 3 animals to the building, the cat she believes is her mom, the dog she's hides in her room when she's living with Monica and Chandler and everyone finds out that chandler hates dogs and also she brings her friends dog over to cheer up Joey when he's all bummed out about his feelings for Rachel then finally at the end of the series Joey buys Monica and Chandler a baby chick and baby duck as house warming gifts for their new place but has them on his apartment beforehand! So seriously what are the rules in that building! Xxxxxx

I think the affording the appartments does make sense all or most of the time. monica was mentioned, rachel lives with her and later with joey or ross, chandler seems to have a pretty high posission in the company he works in and thats why he can afford the appartment (he has well enough money all the time as well, joey first lives with chandler for free and later alone or with rachel but with an already good salary from days of our lives. And ross isnt just a random museum worker, he's a scientist so he probably earns good money too. (especially when he's a professor later on. And I think (I'm not sure though) Phoebie's appartment is her grandmothers, which would make it free.
Another problem with logic I just found is: Chandler was looking for a roommate and it was joey in the end. (and he didnt even know him really well. But why wouldnt he have kicked joey when he coulndt pay his bills the second time. (I'm quite sure joey wasnt able to pay his bills back then)

When Joey buys the boat, he says he will make payments and do whatever it takes, perhaps he was able to finance the boat or get a line of credit.
With Chandler and Monicas wedding venue, theres an episode where Monicas parents admit they spent Monicas wedding fund, and Chandler reveals he has a large amount of savings. Later, Monica and Chandler decide theyd rather spend the money on their marriage rather than a big fancy wedding, and change their plans.
When Rachel says yes to Joeys proposal, I think its mainly because Janice got into her head earlier in the episode, saying Ross will probably eventually bail on her, and she will be alone as a single mother. I think she said yes mainly because she was feeling overwhelmed and disheartened.
Dont get me wrong, I love your videos, MsMojo. Thanks for sharing!

you are so funny, i love you is not the same as monica, i love you heck i've said i love you to multiple people i was not IN love with, there is different types of Love.
the rent was explained, monica's apartment is rent controlled i believe they said from the 70s, pheobe lives in a different area which may be cheaper AND it was her grandmothers apartment, so probably also get it cheaper. ross and chandler do actually make good money.
the biggest things that made no sense was Chandler meeting Rachel multiple times, the first episode and in flash backs, and also the age / birthdates of each of some of them changes.

reply

It's pretty understandable why Rachel said yes to Joey after her talk with Janice.
Ross has a PhD and it's possible that he could afford his apartment.
Doesn't Phoebe live in her grandma's apartment? That way she wouldn't have to pay rent.
The change of venue was to cut off the expenses since Monica's parents spent the money on the beach house.
The thing Chandler said about the door not being locked in 5 years makes sense, since it happened in S6 (2000) and they were locked out in S1 (1994.
The first I love you Chandler said didn't count because he took it back and they let it go as a joke.

What I always think about when watching friends is how the two apartments (Joey and chandlers and Monicas) looked really different. I dont know much about New York apartments but surely all apartments in the same building, particularly across from one another look identical just switched round. I mean Monicas is vastly bigger and spaced out and the bathroom is in a different location than in chandlers. Chandler/joeys apartment is much smaller and not the mention the kitchens looking way different.
Dont know if theres an explanation for that but it just seems unlikely they would look so different.

reply

about the 2 I love yous I think it is because the first time chandler saying this by mistake but the second time he saying this intentionally Monica can be shocked because he actually ready to say that. and the building does have rules in the episode when the genitor makes Rachel cry and then Joey has to dance with him Joey blubs about chick and duck he lies that its there nicknames because of the no pats rule. also, I don't think chandler looks shocked about Monicas wait he just makes fun of her.

Can we just mention how lazy the writers were about giving names to female love interests? There were like 5 Katies on the show. Joey's actress lover Kate, then the girl who hit him Katie, then Cathy, the director assistant he went on a dinner with, then his girlfriend Kathy who then got together with Chandler, then the saleswoman Katie Ross flirted with when Rachel was pregnant. Was there really no other name the writers could think about?

Two things I remember: Monica and Chandler's change of wedding venue could be based on the fact that they decided to make their wedding less expensive (there's an episode about it. Also when Chandler said I love you to Monica for the first time, it was accidental and he kept trying to say he didn't. When he says it in the episode with Phoebe, it's completely intentional and he doesn't take it back (he even reiterates it multiple times.
reply

Joey probably had the money but not to waste all at once on the boat. that's also why he said he will pay in small amounts if he has to. he bid on it thinking it was a guessing game and would get it free if he won not because he wanted to buy it. he changed his mind because him being Joey fell for the picture/scene Rachel narrated to the next highest bidder. Same Joey in a later season lend both Monica and Chandler $1000 each.
reply

they lock the door when everyone from the house is out. and in one episode when monica and chandler were outside and they LOCKED the door, joey and phoebe didn't have the keys but someone else did ( i dont clearly remember who im sorry ) they wanted to get in and had to cal the fire emergency saying it was a gas leak to get in. so they do look the door when no one is in and some people in the group has the keys
reply

in the very first episode, Monica introduces chandler to Rachel as if they've never met. also, because chandler and ross were bestfriends in college. I wonder if they were roommates before he lived with carol? if not, why would chandler choose to live in the same apartment building as Monica? a girl whom he seemed to have a VERY strong dislike for because she accidently chopped off half of his toe.

You're using the air dates of episodes as hard data that the episodes take place during the same time? Take Breaking Bad for example, except for the the last two episodes, all five seasons take place in the span of just one year, but it was five years in real life. You're just assuming it was the same amount of time for Season 9, maybe in the timeline of the show it was exactly nine months.

I feel like Phoebes back story is missing. It just doesn add up. Her mother commit suicide and she end up leaving on the street, but she never mention her sister also leaving on the street, and what about her grandmother? Why didnt she leave with her. Also the appartments dont make sense but in Ross's case it kind of does, i mean he had a PHD and its always implied he makes good money.
reply

Emily still married Ross even after he said Rachels name at the alter, I wouldnt. Monicas parents hating her and favoring Ross even though Rosss life is more of a train wreck than hers. Joey and Rachels odd relationship, the different birthdays and Rachel getting pregnant by Ross and the friends didnt even know they slept together until she was pregnant. Make it make sense!
reply

Also, Emilys uncle (Rachels boss) mentions that they are from Shropshire - in the west of England. It would be likely they would have a western country accent and not a stereotypical posh London accent. Also, it makes no sense why Ross goes to visit her in London and why the wedding is there as Shropshire is no where near London.
reply

Wanna know why all the free time makes sense? Ross probably had a lunch break or let's not forget he's a teacher later on so teachers schedule varies. Monica is a night chef so that makes sense. Phoebe is an occasional masseuse, Joey is a struggling actor. And chandler hates his job so I'm sure at some point he calls in sick
reply

Joey buying the boat and not having the cash was the whole point of the show, did you not hear him saying he didn't care and that he'd make payments. This is neither a mistake or a plot hole dumbass. It feels like this woman talking is taking this a little to literal, trying to dig deep and find the most hair thin fault.
reply

What about the fact that we never seen Ben again? And when Emma comes around wouldnt you think they would be spending time together?
Also Phoebes brother who she had babies for and her birth mother werent at her wedding. That always bugged me. And why didnt we see any other development of the farther? I have questions

reply

One thing that doesn't make sense to me is that Rachel meets Chandler multiple times. There's the flashback to when Ross and Chandler went over to his parents' place for Thanksgiving, the college party, and the very first episode. They have met multiple times, yet it seems like they've met for the first time three times.
reply

No, Joey & Rachel together was not the worst thing they did. Their repeated paring of Rachel & Ross, when they were clearly a highly toxic relationship & to get us to think that she wouldnt actually get off the plane in the series finale was the worst thing. Friends is the all time overrated sitcom of all time.
reply

they illegally owned the chick and the duck. the janitor guy (i forgot his name, he ballroom danced with joey to keep rachel and monica from being evicted) threatened to get them evicted for owning illegal pets
also the chandler comment about monicas weight was just a joke, he doesnt seem surprised joey does

reply

Im so glad that the always at the coffee place got mentioned because I always that it was strange that they never hung out more at bars or night clubs for living in NY especially being single and in late 20s during my time in korea when I was 26/27 same age as them my hang out place was a bar not coffee place
reply

I think Chandler saying he's in love with Monica and telling her he loves her doesn't come as a shock to her because it's the first time he says he loves her, it's because it's the first time he's PUBLICALLY confessing his love to Monica. With Chandler's fear of commitment, his would be quite a huge step.
reply

How about when Joey and Ross date the same girl and Joey demands they set a price limit on their dates because he has no money even though he's a star on a TV soap opera. He should have been making fairly decent money at that point
reply

Danys door also changes spots. When he has his party, the hallway to his apartment is the same as the friends (because it is, but when Rachel starts dating him and goes to his apartment, the hallway and layout of the floor, changes
reply

The biggest bug was that Rachel couldnt remember chandler and barely Monica even though they were clearly high school bessies, and chandler saw Rachel every thanksgiving at the gellars and snogged her at a college party.
reply

I remember a scene at the end of the show they all put down their keys to the apartment when they say it never locked. It was cute too at the end where Matthew Perry says (where? after Rachel says does anybody want coffee?
reply

The chicken en the duck where not allowed to be held as pets in the building as mentioned later in the show. Ross didn't live in the same building so if his place had different rules it makes sense why he had a monkey.
reply

There was an explanation why they didnt get married in her dream venuethey didnt want to spend all Chandlers money on the wedding, they wanted a marriage. So they went with a cheaper version of her dream wedding.
