I hate how the narrative has changed for Charisma Carpenter thing. While Joss is a cheating ass and far from a perfect person, Charisma isn't a completely blameless snowflake either. There are two sides to every story. First she sprung a surprise marriage on them in the middle of the third season, so they had to write her character out during one of the most pivotal changes in the series: Wes's downfall. For me that was one nail in the coffin because I thought the show worked far better with the void she left in the team, than with her presence. When she came back she never really fit in again. Then she waited to tell them about her pregnancy until they had broken down the story arc in season four and started filming. So they had to change things and reshuffle it around to compensate. You could see the fading embers of a better character arc for Evil Cordelia at the beginning of season 4 when her and Angel tag teamed the WR&H people. And it would've put a new spin on Angel training up Cordy in season 3, and her saying that what if i have to fight you, It could happen. Only it would be her that went evil. not him.

Compare these piece of crap execs to superhero movies. Scarlett Johanson was pregnant during Avengers: Age of Ultron. It would be totally reasonable to not want the female star of an action movie to be pregnant simply because of the physical demand. But they just worked around it. Actually, it turned out for the best because Robert Downey Jr. said that the Avengers became very competitive when it came to doing their own stunts to the point it actually got dangerous. He said Scarlett getting knocked up brought common sense back on to the set, and everyone wisely cooled down. Good thing Joss Whedon wasn't in charge of that one and luckily Scarlett didn't get pregnant in the first one, otherwise the Black Widow would have probably been recast.
And I LOVE that Gal Gadot was pregnant during Wonder Woman. It just feels appropriate that in the first big female-centered superhero movie, the star had women's REAL superpower, pregnancy. I heard it made things a bit more expensive for covering it up, using stunt doubles, etc. but I think it was worth it.

I always have mixed feeling on the issue. I know the gut reaction is to be angry at the producers/directors (some who make it really easy to, but at the same time a pregnancy can ruin a show. I hate when they try to hide it because it takes you out of the story (especially in non-comic shows where hiding a bump cannot be played off as humor) because after a while it become obvious that the actress is pregnant. The joke is you hide the pregnancy bump behind a bag but in reality most women's entire bodies changes as they they advance in their pregnancy and if they are playing younger character this is especially obvious. It also it cost a lot of time and money to delay production or change storyline. Also most of the character is pregnant for no other reason than the actress is kind a suck. I don't know if there is a good solution for this issue.

Hmmm. woman crys mistreatment when instead thinking about the predicament you put the entire production in? Plan ahead ladies instead of blaming the rest of the world.
As for the discrimination factor? Plenty of women plan around such things and I'm sorry but from a realistic point of view most women's bodies are destroyed during pregnancy. can't really have a roll you play as a skinny younger virgin woman be dancing around in a roll you obviously can't do. You don't cast a overweight man as a superhero in spandex why should this even be a topic of discussion. Come off your high horse and join reality. Again nobody's telling you to not have kids. simply plan the best you can around it and accept the reality of your actions.

Everytime they do something like this they shoot themselves in the foot. It is too easy to hide a pregnancy, much more than making a character disappear when it doesn't make sense. Or just postpone production. Cordelia's exit (and weird return) hurt Angel's show a lot, and same with Now you see Me - it just didn't make sense for the story for them to disappear. Justice for all these women, and I'm glad that this unfairness is happening less and less (or so it seems.

I think it is very different for movie vs TV. In a movie you have been hired to play a nonpregnant woman. They may have romantic or action scenes as part of the package. If you no longer have a nonpregnant body, oh well. But for an ongoing TV character, it seems petty to write them out. Kimberly was not even a central character. She could be hidden behind furniture. And Denise was part of an ensemble, same thing. For one season, behind couches or desks, etc.

Man Can you guys imaging Joss Whedon would had done if Sarah Michelle Geller got pregnant instead of Charisma Carpenter. We all know he wouldnt put SMG to hell like he did with Charisma Carpenter. Cordelia IMO was the best thing on both Buffy & Angel and she deseverd a better ending then what she got. I am glad she finally come out and told everyone what he put her though.

Being fired for being pregnant is so damn appalling this should never happen i especially feel bad for Charisma Carpenter cause Joss Whedon made it toxic work environment for just about every female star that has to work with him justice for any woman that Joss Whedon made feel so uncomfortable

I always wondered what the heck was up with the hole creepy cordila and connor thing. So basically they couldn't handle a pregnant woman and messed up the feel of the show. I just have cordila leave or be kid napped like Scully in x files. That was just a cringey storyline.

Charisma was literally 50% of the reason why I even watched Angel in the first place. I wanted to watch the show to see what they were going to do with the Cordelia character so when she was out the show felt empty without her. It wasn't the same personally.

It's pure discrimination that these actresses lost their jobs because of their pregnancies. It's a pity that they weren't able to work around them, or go the old fashioned route, and hide them under convenient props, baggy clothes and film them sitting down.

Isla Fisher almost died in the water tank shot in Now You See Me. She is seen struggling but everyone thought she was only acting. Old Hollywood always made their leading ladies and starlets get an abortion. That was the norm.

Common thread seems to be if youre a not an A list actress the TV show/ movie producers will oust you from the roll. Meanwhile theyll work some movie magic to hide the bumps of A-list actresses like Kate Winslet of Gal Godot

Dana Plato is the most tragic on the list. After Different Stokes, her career never recovered and she landed into legal troubles and addiction. As a result, she never got a second chance and she is sadly no longer with us.

I loved Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel, but what Joss Whedon did to Charisma Carpenter was appalling. Cordelia didn't deserve to be done so dirty like that, when she was such a great character.

Why does it not shock me that Universally loathed Joss Whedon suggested Charisma Carpenter actually get an abortion for the sake of his creative vision? There really are no depths for how revolting he is.

After discovering Cosby's story, I am not surprised he had a problem with a pregnant actress and fired her. seems to me that he had always got a problem about women and controlling them and their bodies.

I think Hilary Duff was in the right suggesting the production be postponed until after she gave birth to Luca. It seems more logical, but having the film on the shelf is just useless and disappointing.

Lisa Bonet's pregnancy actually turned out to be a wonderful blessing because her daughter Zoey Kravitz is now a critically acclaimed actress in her own right. Lisa is definitely a proud mama.

6# Wouldn't have been any good anyway with such a talentless actress playing Bonnie
#4 why didn't she speak out then?
#2 given the times then, I'd say the termination was justified

So many of Carpenter's co-stars back her up including Sarah Michelle and David. Whedon has such creative genius but it doesn't compensate for his lack of ethics and morality

The Lisa Bonet one pisses me off so much. Didn't Phylicia Rashad have to hide a pregnancy at one point and they rolled with it? Why fire Bonet over the same thing?

CSI Miami hid Emily Proctors pregnancy in S9. So its not like it cant be done.
They should have hidden Charismas instead of that awful story line.

Charisma's case was extremely humiliating. Cordelia's character arc got butchered, not to mention abuse the actress had to endure.

Wow, didn't see coming about Hilary Duff being on this list! I couldn't picture her anyway in a Bonnie And Clyde remake anyway.
