Some of these worked out for the best, but fans immediately hated these casting decisions. Our countdown includes Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Aladdin, Bram Stoker's Dracula, and more! Which casting decision did YOU hate the most?

Ben Affleck was a suitably sad Batman, looking as though he'd been through it c. f. Christian Bale being simultaneously smug and flaunting hurts, so that it was about home rather than the bad stuff he was supposed to stop.
EVITA wasn't nearly good enough a property to be devalued: Madonna was entirely appropriate except that she could and should have done it ten years previously. What about Jonathan Pryce not even trying to sing in an all-singing musical?
Russell Crowe was an entirely appropriate joy-killing presence, and LES MISERABLES the musical was hopelessly pretentious anyway. A much bigger problem was Sasha Baron Cohen's 'comic relief' (Thernadier was supposed to have been a sergeant in the Napoleonic Wars; that version wouldn't have cut it in STRIPES)
Jessica Simpson was an ideal self-aware Daisy Duke - much more acceptable than the Duke boys being able to swear and boink topless chicks; Simpson had a post-modern awareness of how an issue was made of her womanhood.

The only ones who were mad about Scarlett being in Ghost in the Shell, were white guilt Americans! Not even japanese people were mad about it or even the director of the original Ghost in the Shell anime. he even said in an interview: Oshii recently spoke to IGN about the controversy, one which he doesn't fully understand. What issue could there possibly be with casting her? Oshii told IGN by e-mail. The Major is a cyborg and her physical form is an entirely assumed one. The name 'Motoko Kusanagi' and her current body are not her original name and body, so there is no basis for saying that an Asian actress must portray her. Even if her original body (presuming such a thing existed) were a Japanese one, that would still apply.
People who were mad about the decision about having Scarlett play Major Motoko, don't have any real problems in their life to be mad about so they make one up! Get. A. Life

Loved Russell's turn in Les Mis. Not keen on Ben as Superman. Neither am I keen on Tom in Interview with a Vampire. Kelly McGillis in Top Gun, she was too large a person, not feminine enough against Tom's character, needed someone like Michelle Pfeiffer, who was big in the 80's. Hated Rachel McAdams in The Notebook, if as reported, so did Ryan. Not keen on Meryl in Evil Angels, they should have used an Australian in that role. Adored Nicole in The Hours, she was captivating and inhabited the character from the first scene she was in, sorry but she outshone Meryl in that one, deserved the Oscar. None of the 007's, did it for me, before Daniel, sorry to see him go, hope they cast another hunk for future rolls, personally I would like to see Tom Hardy get the job. Off the top of my head, can't really think of another casting that grates on me.

I thought Will Smith did a fair job, best he could have up against the memory of a legend such as Robin Williams. I enjoyed Jennifer Lawrence's portrayal of Katniss. I had more issues with the casting of a black/white cat playing buttercup! lol Then they replaced it with an orange cat in the 2nd film, like it should have been? If your gonna do something that simple wrong, stick to your guns! And don't get me started on Russell Crowe in Les Mis. Love that movie, and the casting. Have always had a soft spot for the play/music and was very excited when they announced Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean. However, every time Russell Crowe starts singing, I lament his casting and it makes me just a bit madder! Talk about ruining some great dramatic and (supposed to be emotional) songs!

I actually liked Will Smith as Genie, for the most part. It's really not fair to compare him to Robin Williams.
I HATED Madonna as Evita: she's a terrible actress & doesn't have the voice/range for the part
Also hated Crowe as Javert, but that casting wasn't the only issue with that version of Les Miz: they should've recorded the songs properly, in a studio, not used the singing as they were filming.
Tom Cruise may be batshit crazy, but he was good in Interview with a Vampire

Regarding Will Smith as the genie in Aladdin,
First things first forget the whole Oscars controversy because I do not like retrospective reviews like that to impact what did not happen originally. Second the actual reason of this comment is like to compare it to Robin Williams would be a huge mistake for it would severely decrease Will Smiths portrayal. And in my opinion Will Smiths portrayal of the genie was a little too full of himself in a way that was not really too endearing.

There are a lot of things I agree on e. g.
Probably the best Lex Luther to me will always be the guy from smallville
Jennifer indeed looked not as starving as she shouldve been. Hollywood usually is very strict when it comes to this. Why not here? Because she knew how to hunt? Come on!
We dont need to discuss the Joker do we? that being said, we also shouldnt discuss Ben Affleck, right? Who on earth hasnt seen and loved Christian Bale! He is the definition of batman

reply

Madonna actually did a great job as Evita, and Jessie Eisenberg is worse in most of the roles he played, Ben Afleck is not a good Batman, but Michael Keaten, Val Kilmer, Clooney made better Batman. But Tom Cruise was good as the vampire, most of all, Scarlett Jo Hanson CANNOT act, she has given the same luckwarm acting in most movies. She is one of the worst actresses in Hollywood but highly paid.

It's funny that Hollywood has for decades been having white people playing people of color. I mean john wayne played genghis khan for christ sake. But now that the reverse is happening white people are getting pissed off. Why? Historical figures have been misrepresented for decades but society was pretty much ok with that. Now that things are changing folks want to get upset.
reply

This most definitely NOT a top ten. I think the passage of time has faded people's memories. Heath Ledger was despised by fans as the choice for the Joker. Michael Keaton was laughed at when fans found out Mr. Mom was cast as Batman. Robert Downey, Jr. (because of addictions, not his talent) was not a popular pick to play Iron Man.

To be fair, none of the March sisters in Greta Gerwig's version of Little Women were played by Americans, with Jo March being played by Saoirse Ronan (who is Irish, albeit born in America, Amy March being played by Florence Pugh (who, like Emma Watson, is English) and Beth March played by Eliza Scanlen (who is Australian.

Another unpopular opinion here. I enjoyed Russell Crowe as Javert. I realize that, especially compared to other Javerts, his singing delivery was flat and emotionless. But that makes sense to me. His character is dead inside. He has no feelings, no human compassion, no soul. Why would he put any into his voice?
reply

You also forgot Johnny Depp as Tonto and the cast of Death Note. Ben Affleck and Will Smith proved everybody wrong. They made the roles their own. I still think Jessie Eisenberg and Madonna were so miscast in their roles.
Maybe do a list of wrongfully casted actors that includes POC and LGBTQ roles.

reply

Tom Cruise as Lestat If you read the books Lestat was tall, blond, charismatic, mesmerizing and over the top and Tom Cruise is non of those things. I dont know who should have played him, but Tom Cruise was the right choice. But Brad Pitt as Louis was right on and a great choice!
reply

Russel crow wasn't that bad as Javer. He was much better than Keanu in Bram's Dracula. That was the worst on this list (from the movies I watched, I haven't watched all of them, even though I really like Keanu. Jared Leto wasn't a good joker either
reply

If you want to go into older films, Hope Lang was miscast playing Selena Cross in Peyton Place. Selena was discribed as dark, gypsy looking in the book, Hope Lang was blonde and fair complected. You ought to look into the older films.

The word HATED is so bad for a title. yes some things in a roll arent like the should been. jennifer l looks to healthy for her district ( 1 example)but that is not hate. really like watch mojo but this was as wrong titles video!
reply

Renee zellwegger surely theres plenty of British actresses that wouldve worked better as Bridget Jones. Although the accent is bad in Dracula Keanu makes the other aspects of Jonathan work.
reply

I've said it before and I will say it again: Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luther was one of the dumbest casting choices of ALL TIME! What were they thinking? Were they trying to save money?
reply

Of course Depp would have been better. I love Reeves and theres roles no one else could have done. But this wasnt not his thing. I think its great he tried thou. But Depp for sure.
reply

Fans hate it when white actors play roles which are meant to be black or asian.
But when black actors play roles that should be played by white actors; fans call it diversify

reply

I think we can all agree that Robin Williams set the bar high when it came to playing the genie in Aladdin, but if i may say myself, I thought Will Smith made a valiant effort.
reply

Guys, its called acting. Its ok if a white or whatever person played the role of a Persian as long as he kind of look like it. Im talking about Jake Gyllenhaal of course.
reply

Helena Bonham Carter in just about anything she's ever done! Sweeney Todd, Yuk! And she's just terrible in the film of Les Miserables. Terribly wrongly cast. Awful!
reply

Will Smith did fantastic as Genie. He never came across to me as trying to replace Robin Williams. In fact, I thought he was the movie's best thing!
reply

I like Scarlett Johansson, but they had no business casting her in that role. No excuse for that. It should've been a Japanese actress, plain and simple.
reply

bram stokers's dracula is actually a really good movie once you get past keanu's acting and also they should have picked a british actor to play harker.
reply

1: 43 I hear Keanu Reeves being introduced as a North American actor which is basically correct.
But to be more precise, he is actually Canadian.

reply

I love Reeves think hes perfect for some movies! But of course Deep would have done better. Its more his genre. But I give Reeves props for trying.
reply

I bet the people who chastised the casting for Ghost in the Shell are the same group of people who DEFENDED the live action Little Mermaid! :/
