Some inclusions seem political. Table dance is fantastic-wonderful-I was incredibly impressed that I had never seen that. I would only include people who have complete control and presence and grace; compare Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire or the table dancer and they are great inclusions. But Gregory heinz? Seems to lose the presence in his arms-he's not even as good as the old guys in that scene. Shirly Temple? Cute but too young. Cab Calloway-not fabulous dancing, though great theatricality. Berry Brothers or Nicholas Brothers? Acrobatics without cohesion and without the incredible precision of others. Eleanor Powell? Perhaps not as great as, say, Ginger Rogers or many others who weren't even on the list. But her dog dance might be pretty incredible to include Also, the Fred Astaire inclusion seems wrong-a bit gimmicky and not terribly compelling. I think this list is very poorly done and needs more thought, and less p. c. inclusions. So so many great performances not included here that were incredible and should have been included. This wasn't even really Shirly Temple's best, much as the nostalgic points for having Bo Jangles and her together is appealing.

Finally, someone got it right! I know its hard for many to give them the credit, because giving Blacks credit for moves in dance they created and perfected is hard to do. Im not blaming anyone, because its the way we ALL were taught. If you get that unpleasant feeling down in your gut, when somebody say Blacks are the best in something or, Blacks created something, I knew some wouldnt like it.
Because even though Im Black, I know many people were taught that we didnt create anything good. Also, they are finally giving Rosetta Tharpe credit for being the main pioneer that started Rock & Roll along with Chuck Berry, not Elvis Presley. He learned from Rosetta, nor vice versa. But its time to give credit where credit is due.

The Nicholas Brothers were the best. They were featured with Dorothy Dandridge in Sun Valley Serenade in a dance number to Chattanooga Choo Choo. The number was designed so it could be cut in Some markets. Dorothy although not as good at dancing managed to hold her own through singing and sheer screen presence. The Nicholas Brothers also sang in the clip. They were dancing quicksilver.

Absolutely amazing dancers!
The sad thing about the black dancers is, if they were performing at a venue, they weren't allowed front of house. I recall reading about Sammy Davis Jnr having to enter venues through the back door, whereas the rest of the 'Rat Pack' were allowed through the front doors. How vile is that!

1: 47 - It wasn't just Ann Miller's taps that had to be recorded separately. This was standard in Hollywood for ALL tap dancing on film from the early 1930s onwards. And the dancers making such recordings often or perhaps usually were not the same ones dancing in the film.

I just KNEW you had to list Jumpin Jive as #1. I mean, how could you not! But Begin the Beguine belongs much higher on the list. A black and white stage, a Gershwin tune, pairing the two best tappers of their era - it's pure and magical!

How did you almost totally ignore Moses Supposes from Singing in the Rain. Not even an Honorable Mention? The synchronization of that number is incredible and Donald O'Connor goes tap for tap with Gene Kelly. Disappointed you passed it by.

Eleanor Powell's dance with legendary drummer Buddy Rich was one of the best I've ever seen. He even bounced a drum stick off the floor and she caught it in time to keep the beat. Today, they would probably use CGI on the stick lol.

I often think because Anne Miller was not slim like Vera Ellen Eleanor powell etc and a sort of larger than life person The audiences tended to go for the slimmer or more glamourous girls. As a tap dancer she was un beaten!

Fred Astaire. obviously a really great dancer. However (yes, a but coming here, he lacked that extra charismatic attitude, look, and way about him. Ok, I'll say it. he was a plain, skinny and not so good looking guy. Just sayin.
reply

This was a very good list. Except. animated penguins but no Vera Ellen? Really? Not even an honorable mention? Okay, you gave me Shirley Temple and Bill Bojangles Robinson. Also, your #1 was my choice too.

Amazing! There is no bigger rush, bo greater natural high than when one is dancing. Watching these talented artists in motion feels so good. But when one is dancing! One us transported to a higher realm.
reply

Great stuff! More, please! I was fortunate to meet some of these performers. Another hot hoofer to include is Wally Vernon. His routine for This Is The Life in Alexander's Ragtime Band is terrific.
reply

The commentary on this still great compendium is WAY too loud! I had to turn the volume up and down repeatedly to listen to the clips included. Please BALANCE in future!

Obviously MsMojo had meant the Hollywood productions.
Unbelievable but the world and film industry are much, much, much. more and bigger then USA and Hollywood.

I still think the Moses Supposes number from Singin in the Rain with Gene Kelly and Donald OConnor is the best tap dance sequence Ive ever seen in my life.
reply

Vera Allen requires an honourable mention at least but this not a disappointing list and you can see that you have taken the time to do your research
reply

I wish the tap number from hail ceasar could've made an honorable mention. Its not great enough to unseat any on the list, but it was pretty damn good.

days before you could not enter the movie scene with being a dancer. Fred Astire was complete dancer became a famous because of that. Other was Kelly.
reply

F. Y. I.: #4' Berry Me Not', from Panama Hattie. In their nightclub number a beautiful young woman is seen dancing between them, that was Lena Horne.

I just started learning to tap dance at 39 years old, really enjoying it but would never be as good as these, wow such talent.

Please stop doing voice overs. You are irritating. As soon as I hear your voice and realize its a ms. mojo video, I stop watching.
reply

James Cagney's Give my regard to Broadway from Yankee Doodle Dandy should of been in here, he was a amazing dancer and actor.
reply

The inclusion of Happy Feet was silly. Glover would have been a better subject. It was great to see those marvelous dancers.
reply

They should have included the number with Gene Kelly on skates. Donald OConnor should get credit too in those dance numbers
reply

WOW! That was fun! Thanks, I have a Huge smile on my face! I mean face it, how does anyone not like tapdancing? Impossible
reply

The Berry Bros and the Nicholas Bros were streets ahead of everyone. No contest! but all the rest very talented.
