I view the 2009 VMAs as a sort of passing of the torch moment in pop music. Despite Kanye overshadowing everything else, I want to point out how special of a moment Lady Gaga's Paparazzi performance was. It was not only the birth of Gaga's superstardom, I personally thought it was a gift from the King Of Pop himself, who had sadly passed away only months prior. Gaga was supposed to open up for MJ on his ill-fated This Is It tour. It was as if Gaga's performance was a gift he sent from Heaven.

On the other hand the year 2007 in MTV VMA moments belong to her Gimme More performance (tons of controversy and media attention. The rest of the video is perfect.

In the end, it was a very good thing that Kelley Clarkson put on such a big show, the water and the screaming fans adding so much extra to the all-around noise. it ALMOST managed to cover up the many many times Kelley was hopelessly off key and unable to correct herself. Awful performance, truly,
