It was not on the list but Candy (2006) staring the late Heath Ledger as a poet named Dan and Abby Cornish as his art student girlfriend named Candy and their tempestuous relationship based around art and mutual heroin addiction. Will be one that affects me deeply as its ending is so hauntingly realistic in that sometimes doesn't work out and need to stay ended for the sake of your own wellbeing.
It's sad but when Dan says there's no going back if you are given a reprieve to Candy after he gets clean and realizes they can't be together and Candy leaves. It hurts but it's also the most sensible choice the reality of Heath Ledger's demise also adds a layer of real-world bittersweetness to the late actor's performance as well.
With Wuthering Heights one of the things to keep in mind is the interpretation that Catherine's ghost at the beginning of the novel appears to essentially drag Heathcliff to Hell. So despite the idea, many have of it being a story of unending love it can also be seen as a depiction of poetic justice as Heathcliff gets to be with Cathy forever. In Eternal Damnation. Also, Heathcliff was supposedly the inspiration for Edward from Twighlight as well.
Fun story The Notebook was nicknamed My Wife Skip by my step Dad after he watched it with my Mom as a combination of the tear-jerking boy and his dog film My Dog Skip and of course the fate of the wife in The Notebook. As my Mom who can't really handle sad things that well was deeply affected by both movies.

Sorry but a walk 2 remember is a better sad love story than the notebook, Noah all did was guilt trip her and make her his by trying 2 commit suicide in front of her, break up with her when Ali insisted 4 him 2 come with her, and when she got engaged he got mad and her and said she's selfish when Ali clearly didn't know it was her parents doing and her mom never told Ali he wrote her letters. How cld she known that? And Ali was not that someone who take it 4 granted since she's human and has empathy and was willing 2 leave her rich status.
At least Landon has better character development. And I know at the beginning of the movie he started out as flawed but later learns and wants 2 change 2 be a better person bcuz Jamie believes him and she was his inspiration. And when he does that she was impressed. Landon never pressure her in anything and Jamie learns how 2 stand up herself and not be afraid of him or even called out on his flaws, which blossomed a friendship into something more. I feel more empathy 2 them more while feeling nothing of Ali's and noahs relationship even though we're supposed 2 feel sorry 4 them when their elders years later but I just cldnt bcuz of their younger years I don't c them empathic but manipulate. In my opinion it's justified.

So many of these selections are the typical and boring MsMojo fare. These lists are as surprising as a Friends episode being selected as #1 for something. Rather than choose the idiotic Ghost, why not give a more cerebral choice a chance? Truly, Madly, Deeply has been described as the thinking persons Ghost by those who struggle with originality; a trite description of a far superior film. Starring Alan Rickman and Juliet Stevenson, directed by the brilliant Anthony Minghella it is a beautiful, albeit sad, tale of love, death, and healing. Titanic, Ghost, and Love Story are the Harlequin Romances of films. Please use your vast resources to expand your cinematic selections.

You made one error: Rose is not dreaming about Jack in the final scene. Rose died an old lady, warm in her bed after she survived and had lots of babies which Jack made her promise him and to never let go of that promise which she never did, as shown by her pictures, she lived a long and happy life like she promised Jack. Rose kept him in her heart, the Heart of the Ocean was the only thing she had of their love, and when she was ready, Rose told their story and returned the heart to the ocean before she fulfilled the final part of her promise which was to die an old lady, warm in her bed and she did then Rose returned to Jack, who was waiting for her at the clock.

And this is why we end up with stalkers, Heathcliff romantic, it's the ultimate woman hating incel of the if I can't have you no one will? Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind is about 2 people that keep repeating the same behaviours destroying their relationship over and over. Romeo & Juliette is about teen suicide. While some of these are hugely romantic some of these are just horrible relationships and I say that as someone that loves Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

You should have added Somewhere in Time (1980) with Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeve. It was heartbreaking when she was calling out to him as he was going back to his time and then even more so when he was trying to go back to her. And the music, I listen to the soundtrack, which is beautiful, and it not only reminds me of the parts of the movie that it was in, but it reminds me that I would watch this with my mom, who I miss dearly every day.

Damn you Nicholas Sparks! What did you do, invest your first royalties in tissues stocks? 21 novels, 11 of which have been made into movies and every one of them pure tear-jerkers! Hubby and friend walked in one day to find me sobbing and he turned to his Buddy and simple said, Sparks had a book drop. His Buddy asked me if Jeanie, his wife, knew as that was enough said to have him understand it all!

Wurthering heights. Just gonna forget that Catherine continuously led heathcliff on and made him believe that they would be together when he became richer and more successful and then when he achieved that she would shoot him down and choose someone else. But heathcliff jealousy reached toxic levels thats bull. Catherine earnshaw is almost bad as Scarlett OHara. Really bad take.

Every time I hear the line Love means never having to say youre sorry it makes me laugh and simultaneously get angry, because to me love means knowing when youve screwed up and being willing to do the work to fix your mistakes, and also knowing that nobody is perfect and if someone really loves you than they will accept you for all that you are, including all of your faults.

For me, the most heartbreaking movie that I would never recover from is Pearl Harbor. The way they ended up to kill Danny Walker to solve their triangle love problem. I just cant get over it.
It really made me cry and heartbroken more than what A Walk to Remember and Me Before You ever did to me. Pearl Harbor is the worst heartbroken I ever felt.

Where is the English Patient, it belongs on this list, that movie always makes me tear up, especially when Almasy saw Katherine wearing the thimble and she says of course, you idiot, I always wear it, I've always worn it, I've always loved you, and when Almasy sees her now dead in the cave he left her and carries her dead body crying.

Not sure if it could count but Legends of the Fall is one of the saddest movies. All three brothers love Susanna, and she loves two out of the three and ends up marrying the one she doesn't. Tristan moves on and marries Isabelle 2, but then she dies, and Susanna ends up taking her own life. None of the romances worked out for anyone.

WEST SIDE STORY! How could that one not have made the list? There are many more movies that could make up a few more of these lists, but West Side Story should be on all of them. And Waterloo Bridge deserves a mention too. The 1931 version is good, but I prefer the 1940, with Vivien Leigh. Tragedy upon tragedy.

I actually only watch the Notebook for the story of them when the are older and she has Alzheimer's. As heartbreaking as it is at that point, Noah shows what true unconditional love for someone is as Allie no longer is who she was or recognizes him. The younger Noah has little that reflects such a possibility.

any tragic death or any scene ending with a sorrowful goodbye always tissues need to be near by but titanic me before you the vow affair to remember sophie's choice steel magnolias age of adaline old yeller also very sad but jack and rose's love and jaime and landon always romantic but tragic love story
reply

#10 - You should have mentioned that the novel was inspired by the author's sister, Danielle Sparks Lewis. The story is largely fictional, but certain parts were based on real experiences.
The Notebook, is #2? Are you kidding me? Far as I'm concerned, it's not even worthy of the Top 5.

reply

P. S. I love you is hands down my favorite sad movie. I always end up crying through the whole thing. Some of these other movies just aren't romantic to me. They are about selfish people who destroy themselves and those around them - that is not for me. I want a Gomez and Morticia kind of love.
reply

I always thought at the end of Titanic when Rose is reunited with Jack, it's because she died, and met up with him in the afterlife, (along with all those that perished on the Titanic. Also, I can never watch Somewhere In Time or An Affair To Remember without crying ugly tears.
reply

Why didnt Five Feet Apart make this list, I actually like it better than The Fault in Our Stars and A Walk to Remember and I love both of those movies, of course that could be because of Cole Sprouse but its a great movie and it should have been somewhere on this list!
reply

A Walk to Remember was a better book than a movie. In the book it takes place in the 1950s, so the idea that Mandy Moores character could have cancer and still look like that. Because maybe back then she wouldnt have had chemo and radiation and lose all her hair.
reply

Why do these lists never include the 1968 version of Romeo and Juliet? While the Luhrmann version is great, people forget the original classic starring actual teenagers.
Also, glad Casablanca got in the top 5. Loved that film since middle school.

reply

Correction (Spoilers ahead): In Casablanca, she was already married when she met Rick, but she thought her husband had died in the concentration camp. She leaves Rick exactly because she discovers her husband is alive.
reply

you may go back to 1939, but that year also had INTERMEZZO (the English version) and the best version of WUTHERING HEIGHTS; you forgot BRIEF ENCOUNTER, LETTER FROM AN UNKNOWN WOMAN, MADAME DE, CAMILLE
reply

A movie that made me cry that I wasnt expecting was Roman Holiday with Audrey Hepburn and Robert Mitchum. The ending is heartbreaking, the way they look at each other says volumes

I saw Love Story for the 1st time yesterday. Not once did I cry as I found it very boring. 2: 53
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind really showcases how versatile Jim Carrey is.
