Absolutely Donald O'Connor. Was it he that did the continuous high-hopping through small town-all in a single take-no breaks. It seemed as though he had springs on top of a trampoline the height he got and the ease he made it look-an incredible feat-no pun intended. There were also a pair of brother's, black and a black man on hi own. I bet there is a lot more of that that were completely overlooked because they could only perform in front of black audience-most are live performances but I have seen very old footage-still/pun; that we should all be privy to. Dynamic and inventive and made it look so easy and how entertaining their talent was. Thank you. TS

Since I've watched the movie Since I was 6 years old, my favorite tap dancing movie scene was and still is In fact to the this day Boogie Wonderland from Happy Feet. I mean just look at how Mumble was able to turn out triumphant during the mating season scene with him and Gloria. And all he really had to do to finally impress her when she was singing
her Heartsong to Mumble was to do what he does best and what he has been doing his whole life. Dancing. I mean as Gloria put it herself towards Mumble. You might want to stick to dancing and during that scene, he did just that. You go Mumble!

I'm in complete agreement with what most people commented on this video. Donald O'Connor was flawless, very smoothe, and had much more finesse and abilities than the others. He was able to incorporate everything into his expressive dance. Mitzi Gaynor once said, he could dance on top of a needle, the harder it was, the better he liked it. It's actually criminal that he isn't regarded as one of the very best. Multi-talented and simply adorable. He took a back seat to no one. Eyes only on him in every dance. Watching him is pure bliss!

My fav & i've always had a thing for vera ellen (seen here dancing in white christmas ) she danced & matched with the best of them, love the dance scene from my fav movie on the town when you walk down main street with me but i love donald O'connor in the moses supposes number like a lot of ppl saying on here he was such an under rated dancer. but that number with cab callaway, performed by the nicholas bros takes the biscuit absolutely incredible dancers

I won't disagree with the picks here. But I'd like to add that there are several great dancers who are over looked time after time. Donald O'Connor and Gene Nelson both lived in the shadows of Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly. Donald O'Connor is still remember by by many, but Gene Nelson seems to be a forgotten man by most. and that is a shame, because he may have been the smoothest and most fluid of all of them.

It's about time you folks did a video not centered on the 1990s onward. I enjoyed this one. It's just a pity that you had to (once again. and again) use the overused word iconic. Damn. well, it took at whole seven minutes. Btw, you missed two. 1 - J Cagney and Bob Hope in The Seven Little Foys and 2 (which was truly disappointing) - J Cagney and Ruby Keeler, Shanghai Lil, Footlight Parade.

The Begin the Beguine number from The Broadway Melody of 1940 is absolutely too lowly rated here. I would place it at number one, although your number one is arguably as great and a good deal more athletic. For that beautiful one-take tap-a-looza by Astaire and Powell, though, there has NEVER BEEN anything better on the screen, and that definitely includes your 2nd through 8th choices.

All of them were marvellous, most of scenes were incredible and some of them were even impossible I admire the tap dancing period of Hollywood, I've watched most of them. Thank you for the list Every dancer was gifted but with all my respect to those masters; only one was 11 years old. Billie Elliot was/is a poweful movie and Jamie Bell was unbelievable.

When I was a kid, my folks couldn't afford both piano and dance lessons, and chose to keep the piano lessons. I'm a senior now and still play the piano well, but I sure wish I could have kept both and learned how to tap dance. What a joyful and fascinating form of dance, I never get tired of watching it. Thanks!

This is the first time I've watched a MsMojo video, and it will be the last. Great dancing, but the inane commentary was so annoying and intrusive that I had to shut it off before the halfway mark. We can see for ourselves what great talents they were. Just introduce them, and then shut up and let them dance!

I can't decide who is better or makes me want to dance - Gene, Fred or James Cagney? They just are so talented. Gives me goosebumps. But Cagney may be my favorite, just the way he taps with ease is amazing. He also looks like he's going to tip over when he danced. Its humor, joy and ease all in one.

Shame on you for including an animated movie in this list. There is a smorgasbord of tap sequences from classic Hollywood to choose from (and Vera Kelly was only mentioned once) and yet you included a sequence from an animated movie. That was just ridiculous!

Rod Taylor as the patriarch, Daddy-O in the film Welcome to Woop Woop, dancing on a saloon bar covered with steel plate and car battery jumper cables clipped on his tap shoes, done near the end of his brilliant career should be near the top of this list.

Tap. Bleech. The only ones I would ever watch would be the Billy Elliot and the Bojangles / Shirley Temple.
The rest all look exactly the same with just different clothing. Tapity tapity tappity tappity tappity tappity tppity tppity tap tap tap. ho hum.

I showed my nephews the dance sequence make them laugh and I had never heard them squeal with joy before or since. Over and over again they watched it, thinks it was the greatest thing theyve ever seen. I think its time to show them some more tap dancing scenes

Gregory Hines in Cotton Club was awesome! There is one scene where he is doing a tap duet with another character(can't remember who it was other than another tap legend) their feet were a perfectly timed blur of movement, that is #1 tap scene in my book!

I am so thankful for happening upon this video. I was born in 57 when everything I watched were considered repeats. Every cell in my body was tingling in an old familiar pleasure of my youth.
Greatly loved and missedALL OF THEM. GREAT INFLUENCES

Thank You for this!
Such a bummer its a lost art just about. I was waiting for The Nicholas brothers.
Theyre the best dancers in the world in my book and my favorite ones along with the fantastic Mr. BoJangles,
Bill Robinson!

switch Tap and Stormy Weather. Those old times in Tap were in their 60s (Sammy was 64) and they moved like 20 year olds out doing Hines, and Hines was the best of his generation. My absolute favorite Hines Movie.

Many of these dance artists hadnt formal training. It wasnt uncommon for children to busk dancing for cash and children of performers to join them on stage growing up working as dancers.

I decided to learn tap in my early twenties. I was amazed that I learned to walk, because my feet were so clumsy trying to do tap. Watching this brought tears to my eyes.

Am I crazy or has the Abraham scene from White Christmas been removed? Because I grew up watching the movie, and any platform I can find it on doesn't have that sequence?
reply

This video would have been more enjoyable if most of the narration had been omitted. The narrator's comments, stating what viewers could judge on their own, were banal.
reply

There's some great stuff here, but the first time I saw the Nicholas Brothers clip I was absolutely staggered! Nothing else I've ever seen comes close!
reply

Vera Ellen was suspected of being anorexic though never diagnosed. she sure looks it, toothpick legs makes me cringe too much to enjoy her frenetic dancing.
reply

You nailed it as always Miss Mojo! Wish every young person and old could view these American treasures! Bravo! Keep it coming please.
reply

My grandfather used to say that Sammy Davis' dancing was like long underwear (one piece) swinging on the clothesline (on a windy day.
reply

I loved Donald OConnors dancing and I think Fred Astaires putting on the Ritz deserves a mention. So hard to pare it down to twenty
reply

I agree with the Nicholas bros. being the best. But it was their version of Gal From Kalamazoo that was the greatest!
reply

I could never figure out how Vera-Ellen kept her shoes on at that speed! There appear to be no tops and no straps.
