These non-binary characters in film and TV broke the mold. For this list, well be looking at the best characters from both movies and television series that either identify as non-binary or otherwise fall outside of the male/female gender binary. Our countdown includes One Day at a Time, The Umbrella Academy, Sex Education, and more! Who's YOUR favorite non-binary character?

How goddamn dare you disrespect Janet like this! Janet predates your so-called first nonbinary main character, and is an icon in every nonbinary circle I run in. it's bad enough Janet isn't number one, but to leave the Good Place off your list entirely is unconscionable.

A favourite of mine is Adira Tal from Star Trek Discovery. It is a really amazing take on being non-binary. Because it takes place in the far future, using they/them pronouns is completely normal and not a single person in the show questions it.

Yay Thank you so much for your support by making this video its been difficult to find shows with Nonbinary representation this means allot to me seeing this video as I identify as Nonbinary myself: ) im excited to start watching all of these

As someone who is genderfluid the fact that you MsMojo content creators made this list means the world to me. Thank you. Also Stevonnie will always be my personal favorite because of just how alike we are. But thank you again MsMojo

Toaster from the Brave Little Toaster trilogy should have been an honorable mention. After all, the titular toaster has become something of a non-binary icon among LGBTQ+ fans since The New '10s, thanks to their Ambiguous Gender.

Stevonnie is amazing and I always cheer whenever they appeared on the show.
Raine Whispers is such a lovable character; theyre strong, clever, sweet, and I love the way they blush whenever theyre embarrassed.

Not even giving Jim from Our Flag Means Death an honorable mention is a crime when one of the characters on the list isn't even canon nonbinary in the text of the series (just comments from the actor)

Its so nice to see representation. Im gender queer and still figuring out what that means to me. Seeing someone whose confident in themselves helps me be one step closer to also being confident.

Theres no such thing as a non-binary character. Every person in this video is either male or female. Unless the characters are representing fictional entities, like a unicorn, goblin, or dragon.
reply

Tribore Menendez from Final Space as well, but no offense they were gender fluid in his fusion between two gender split each other according to his backstory hatch from the moon back in S2.

What about Blu del Barrio's character Adira Tal in Star Trek: Discovery? They're a non-binary actor portraying a non-binary character and I love how they were written.

Raine Whispers and Stevonnie are my favorite non-binary characters in animation. Hope future non-binary characters are as great, or possible better, as these icons.
reply

Stevonnie, Double a trouble heck yeah! But seeing Loki finally being seen as fluid just wins because people deny it all the time as if they dont know the lore!
reply

Non binary is NOT a real thing! Just because somebody feels like theyre not 100% masculine or not 100% feminine doesnt mean theyre both or neither.
reply

Double Trouble was epic. They were such a great character. Everyone should watch She-Ra, there's a ton of pride representation in the show.
reply

Even though Sadie from steven universe's partner (Shep) was in like 3 seconds of the show, Shep is amazing. They had SO much potential.
reply

I have nothing to say here other than I love Raine, and I hope that well see more characters like them in future Disney projects.
reply

I was not expecting double trouble to be on this list you got to give credit and also I did not know that Loki is non-binary
reply

I've been Wanting to make a non binary character, but felt i should learn ehat the greats are so i dont make a bad character.
reply

Klaus never came out as non-binary in the series. :( plus the scene you picked
Spoiler alert
That is not Klaus it's Ben

Wonder why some ppl think asking for pronouns makes you a snowflake? Nothing wrong with not wanting to offend someone.
reply

There is a distinct lack of Adira from Star Trek Discovery on this list. Id love to see a part two to this list.
reply

Yael is an amazing character that deserves more appreciation. I love them and glad to see them in the vid
reply

Wow, I wish those where around when I was younger, I would probably understand myself a little earlier.
reply

Why don't they ever have Michael Collins from the proud family. He would be good as best gay characters.
reply

OKAY BUT WHERE IS UNCLE CLIFFORD FROM P-VALLEY! Nicco Annan deserves some r e c o g n i t i o n!
