I don't get how the death of Joyce was more surprising compared to that of Tara. Since the beginning of Season 5 there was a subplot going on showing Joyce having health issues. Her death was expected but we didn't know when it would happen. As for Tara her death was a complete shock. It wasn't hinted, she wasn't sick or anything. It just happened out of the blue. That is the definition of an unexpected death. So the roles are reversed and death of Joyce pales in comparising to how unexpected the death of Tara was.

Gan in Blake's Seven. Season two episode five 'Pressure point. ' They decided to kill someone off because viewers thought Blake and friends were invincible and won all the time. And this was 1979. No internet. No spoilers. Nobody knew it was coming. Ditto the end of the final episode. Or the end of Dr. Who 'Earthshock' part four.
If you can go into the field of radio, Grace Archer. That made the headlines at the time.

Geez, how could you forget the LA Law. At the end of the 5th season, Rosalind Shays fell down an elevator shaft and died. It was the biggest out of the blue death Ive ever seen. It was on the news, people talked about it everywhere. People hated that character. It wasnt just that she died, it was how she died.
The elevator episode was ranked #81 on TV Guide's 100 Greatest TV Episodes of All Time.

I loved how Logan Roy had the ultimate unceremonious TV death. In an airplane bathroom off camera. It was a deliberate choice to focus on the other characters and I loved that it wasn't about Logan and I felt the writers were just throwing him away to propel the story forward. They get a big applause for having the balls to do that.

Cutners death on House felt very real, a lot of people who are suicidal dont show it on the outside and often come off as happy or at least like theres nothing wrong. And the suicide rate for doctors is very high because of all the horrible things they witness in hospitals, like when they lose patients in their care.

Definitely agree with Glen! Especially after the fact, he had just had a fakeout death! It felt very much like a repeat of Beth, but even more so, coz they trick you into believing Glen got eaten, so he was mourned, then have him bought back, reunited just to be brutally killed, I stopped watching after that.

Mine has and always will be mr hooper from sesame street. I was a kid and it was the first time in tv history a tv show and its cast talked about not only death. But the real passing of one of the shows key characters. Beautiful to watch but still chokes me up

Mark Green was the hardest tv death. He was my favorite on ER and the show was never the same. I cant believe you didnt include Jack from when call the heart. Im dont think anyone say that coming and the show was ruined after it. In my opinion.

i'll comment only about the ones i've seen
1. eedie getting killed in the upside down was very unexpected that i liked it and hated it at the same time because i like to be surprised on stuff in shows
2. glenn was a nice surprise

One death that shocked me was Detective Carter on Person of Interest. However Taraji P Henson went on to play Cookie on Empire. This was a death I did not see coming. Also, Branch Connelly on Longmire caught me off guard too.

The House of Cards death isn't particulary shocking for British viewers who'd seen the original. The original one was a bit of a shock at the time though at first re-watching it, it was not a good idea to meet up on the rooftop.

Game of Thrones one really shocked me. Didn't expect that and the way he was leading his army, is the true battle we should have had before the white walkers. Dude was a better leader than his father, who also lost his head

Dr. Romano getting crushed by a helicopter on ER. After losing his arm to a tail rotor, to be crushed by the very thing that almost ruined him as a person, Dr. Romano's death made both my wife's and my jaw hit the floor.

I'm sorry, Are we forgetting about the 100? How can you not mention Lexa from the 100? It made mass anger and frustration. Plus it was a cause of many cons like Clexacon. Everyone was devestated about her death. COME ON.

In case you dont know this already, never give CPR on any sort of a soft or bouncy surface unless absolutely necessary. Move the body onto a solid surface like the floor, a table, or something similar.

Downton Abbey. The guy dies going what, 17 miles an hour, in a car accident, during a time when there was like 39 cars on the entire planet. Thats the funniest death on the list.

Genuinely curious how the spoiler warning actually achieves anything. Is there anything that indicates which shows/movies are at risk of being spoiled before the actual spoiler?
reply

Doctor Greene's death still brings a tear to my eye. For me, Rita's death on Dexter is still by far the most shocking death in TV history, especially as a season cliffhanger.
reply

I lost interest at the first one. Eddie was a character I think many of us knew would die. He was blamed for all the murders. There wasnt any hope for him to survive
reply

Helen's death in Ozarks, Rita's death in Dexter and Howard Hamlin's death in Better Call Saul were the only deaths where I was genuinely shocked when they happened.
reply

Poussey's death really is Susan's fault, if she didn't flip out and later attack the officer Poussey would still be alive. It was a tragic accident, caused by Susan
reply

#1 made me quit WD for good even knowing it was about to happen. They made so many changes from the comic, don't know why they had to keep that in but whatever.
reply

Um everyone knew Eddie would die. The endearing character in every season is usually killed so if you thought he was gonna love you dum. Barb, Bob, Eddie.
reply

Henry Blakes death was not shared with the cast before they yelled action, the only one with any clue was Gary Burgoff as he read the page
reply

What gets me about Henry's death is Radar's reaction. The sight of happy bubbly Radar, barely able to hold it together just gets me
reply

You forgot about NCIS season 2, when the female agent was shot dead in front of Gibbs and Tony by a sniper on top of the roof by Ziva brother Ari.
reply

I have to say the murder of Glen in the Walking Dead was by far the most unexpected and graphic I've seen during a show I watched faithfully.
reply

one shocking death for me was the glee one, finn played by cory monteith who actually died irl. and the way the implemented it in the show
reply

Ehhh. Was Gus Fring really that shocking? We were on a very clear path toward that from the moment he was introduced as a character.
reply

Shepherd's death in Serenity was unexpected and sucked.
Alan's character being run through was just as bad.
