She went to work where she was harassed by her boss and possibly some of her coworkers too. She did this, so she could provide for her mother. Wait, 13 year old Jennette was providing for her mother? It is supposed to be the other way around.
Being 13 is hard enough if you have two parents who love you and assume the role of bread winner as the adult is supposed to do. When you 13 and probably in either the seventh or eight grade, you are going through your awkward phase, you are treated like a child and then expected to act like an adult. Your teachers constantly telling you that you need to prepare for the future, then when you do prepare for the future, they tell you to stop growing up so fast. If you enjoy being alone, you are called an anti-social weirdo. If you enjoy being with others, you are called needy. When your friend insists on talking to you during class and you ask them to shut up so you can focus on what the teacher is saying, somehow you receive as much blame as your hypothetical friend if not more, when not only was this not your fault, you where actually the victim. Your hormones are running wild, so much so that you fly off the handle over relatively trivial things. If you have a younger sibling, they can get away with throwing temper tantrums and you can't. If you have older siblings, they have a lot of privileges that you don't. Imagine if, on top of that, you had to deal with financial responsibilities and a hostile work environment.

Its interesting that Jennettes character on iCarly was in some way the opposite of her real personality at the time. Sam cared little about pleasing people whereas Jennette describes her young self as an anxious people pleaser. Sam had a negligent mom who cared little about what Sam was doing whereas Jennette had a controlling mom who interfered with every aspect of Jennettes life. Sam had tremendous hostility towards her mom, but unlike Jennette at the time, she was open about it. Whereas J took years to accept the reality of her relationship with her mom.
Its also funny that Jennette over the years has become much more like the character she used to play. She refused to accept Nickelodeons hush money. She refused to do the iCarly reboot. She quit acting. And she wrote a memoir with one of the most provocative book titles Ive ever heard. Jennette is her own person now, but playing that character on iCarly is what eventually led her to this.
Theres this theory of subconscious release - that when an actor plays a character they arent just acting but expressing a part of themselves they dont usually show. That the character is inside them in some way but usually hidden. Thats why a lot of actors end up bearing remarkable similarities to their characters - and in some cases, they become the character.

This was really sad. I heard about iCarly along with Sam and Cat long after they aired, and I have no words to express how messed up this was. An anime series named Your Lie in April follows a boy who suffered very similar traumatic experiences to what Jennette had to go through, also from a mother who was dying of cancer and trying to force her dreams onto her child. But this is the kind of molding that many nobles have used on their offspring (biological or adopted) for many generations throughout history, and it's heartbreaking to see this still being used today. Everyone has dreams that they want to achieve, but we should always take into consideration what our children want to do instead of forcing what we failed to accomplish onto them. What her mother put her through makes me sick to my stomach, even if she had good intentions (as a child who was born into a near-broke family myself, I can somewhat relate to her upbringing, and Schneider made it even worse with how he treated most of those child stars. I know Cameron Boyce died, but how much of an impact did Schneider have on Boyce's tragic end?

No wonder Jennette McCurdy's biological mother got stripped out of her so called hollywood legacy. Her mother forced her own daughter to follow her legacy. Her biological mother, had to get her comeuppance. Jennette's biological mother, she had to get what she deserved. Her film legacy is meaningless and serves no purpose. It was a fantasy. Caring about the people and helping others is more important than following a legacy. I don't care if the McCurdy's replace her with a new mom, and her biological mother calls them for destroying her legacy. I don't find this as selfish, a moment to cope and reunite Jennette's family together. Legacy is justified better in fiction. In real life, not so much. It is just nothing more a life of fantasizing.

It was interesting reading what she went through. She lived her life in a role of who she believed others wanted her to be. She was constantly putting het mother's needs before her own and playing the role as the near perfect daughter. She was constantly playing other characters. In the book you can see how the death of her mom led her to question her idenity and feel free with herself. It's like what do you do when the person you live for is no longer there? It is tricky navigating and discovering yourself. We all have parts of ourselves or our past we may not be proud of. It is a shame that she went through such a rough journey. I am proud of her for being so open and authentic about her experience. I do hope she is doing much better.

Back in the 90s I knew someone that won a tv series in fact I knew the hole family. The son was on this show and was 1 of 3 kids in the show. When I would see his mother she would
tell me about life on the set. The one thing she and her son would say was how good the
Welfare worker was. My understanding was this person would make sure the Minor children would go to school and not work past there 5 hr on set and 3hr in school and not allow anyone mistreat a child on or off set. Unfortunately Miss McCurdy did not seem like they had a good one on there set sorry. There should be a class for stages mother so they know what not to let happen to there child on the set.

Just wanted to take a moment to say how strong I think Jeanette not only is now. but also as a child so freaking strong! Very sorry to hear of the things she went through. but Jeanette you are an amazing young woman. you totally made it to hell and back. and you landed exactly on your feet. As for her book. I haven't had the opportunity to read it yet. but I definitely will! The fact that you were able to open up and write the book it's freaking awesome! Letting your story help others is the best thing you could possibly do!

I kept thinking it was just Dan Schneider who made her think of quitting acting but when I found out that her mom was also the cause of her quitting as well and what happened with her and her mother. Its so heartbreaking to have heard her story. I hope she will be doing better. Growing up I thought it would be cool to be on a series like Icarly or Drake and Josh, now that I know that Dan is the most creepiest show creator Im glad that dream of being an actor on one of those shows is now dead

No child should be forced and manipulated in that type of hell like Jennette McCurdy went through. She wouldve been more successful whatever she wanted in her life than being forced to continue her acting career. My parents would respect my decision if I was burned out for something I did not enjoyed as I used to as a kid but the type of abuse in a household and to continue push her to her limits with no cessation of what her mom did is just unacceptable.

I know that she's been through a lot but you shouldn't avoid people who don't share your religious views.
I feel that it's not fair to people if you avoid friendship based on religion.
You will look like a religious freak if you do that.
Albert Einstein was a genius and one of the greatest Science contributors in history, yet a believer in God, but he didn't avoid people who were Atheist or Agnostic.

I really want to cry watching this. My family and I have been laughing along to iCarly since my middle school days, and Jennette was ALWAYS our favorite. To learn all of this was going on behind the laughs breaks my heart. I hope to God Jennette will be able to heal and come to terms with all of this horror. I will always be on her side

I remember listening to her being interviewed on Chris Hardwick's Nerdest Podcast what is now many years ago, and Jennette talking about the music, writing, and the Sam and Cat issues, its interesting how the narrative has changed over time as she has clearly unpacked what happened to her. you go Jennette.

Wow! Her mom make Joan Crawford look like an Angel. This is Mommie dearest 2. 0. This one of the many reasons why I'm convinced some people shouldn't be parents. Don't torment kids because of your own unhappiness. Go to therapy and get a pet.

I read the book and it was incredible! She is an amazing writer and so real and funny in the midst of a traumatic upbringing. Good for her for finally getting the chance to be herself and live her own life! She is an inspiration!

Her life reminds me of Drew Barrymore's childhood etc. Even if she chooses not to ever act again. Poor Janette. So many child stars like this. Not right. I feel terrible. At least she is doing better now and the world knows etc.

I'm still wondering why John K, Butch Hartman, Chris Savino, and Dan Schneider are not behind bars yet. But I have to agree with what her book says. And I'm also glad Debra is downstairs right now.

Bipolar disorder doesnt make you do the things her mother did. Narcissistic PD would however. Someone can also get BPD from being raised by a narcissist.

I felt bad for Jennette McCurdy, because she had an eating disorder when she was much younger. Please note that I'm not reading her book at the moment.
