My examples:
Into the Woods winning Best Book of a Musical over Phantom of the Opera. Phantom of the Operas holds up better than Into the Woods which falls apart with all of its plot holes and conveniences the more you think about it.
The Rains Came winning Best Visual Effects over The Wizard of Oz. Wizard of Ozs visual effects are still more remembered than The Rains Cames and very revolutionary for its time. The tornado effects are still impressive 84 years later and still better than most modern movie tornadoes. As well as that famous scene when Dorothy opens her door and the movie turns from sephia to color as we get our first look of Oz is seamless and still magical as the first time audiences saw it.
Homers Phobia (The Simpsons) winning Outstanding Animated Program over Mothers Day (Rugrats. Sorry, Simpsons, but Mothers Day is such a beautiful and emotional special that addresses coping with the absence of a mother, especially on a holiday celebrating them and how hard it can be.
Cant Slow Down and The Joshua Tree winning over Purple Rain and Bad. Purple Rain and Bads albums are just bangers and more impactful on pop culture than just music culture.

Objectively, Kane should have gotten Best Picture, but you have to remember what was going on at the time. It was a movie basically about maybe the most powerful man in America at that time, William Randolph Hearst. Hearst had so much power with his newspapers that he could destroy anything or anyone in an instant if he wanted to, and did many times. It was already a foregone conclusion that Kane was never going to win any major awards and Orson Welles was going to be crucified because Hearst wanted it that way. I think Forrest Gump was definitely the right winner. It's definitely been more culturally impactful, I think. How many people quote that movie and how many quote Shawshank or Pulp Fiction?

Although it's listed as an honourable mention, '24' thoroughly deserved it's Outstanding Drama Series Emmy for Season 5 as it is widely considered by fans and critics to be the show's best season. On both Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes, it is the show's highest rated season. Not to mention it received 12 Emmy nominations (the most for any season of 24) and 5 wins including a long overdue win for Kiefer Sutherland. So, to state that is was widely considered to be past its prime at that point is inaccurate.
However, some entries I can get behind such as Shakespeare in Love winning Best Picture - so undeserved!

I can't believe Big Hero Six won Best Animated Feature at the 87th Academy Awards. How to Train Your Dragon 2, Box Trolls, Song of the Sea and The Tale of Princess Kaguya are all much better films that BH6. I adore Studio Ghibli and (here's my controversial hot take) think Isao Takahata's work is more thoughtful and original than Miyazaki's, but if The Tale of Princess Kaguya had lost to any other film in the category I'd have nodded and thought they were worthy of recognition. Big Hero 6 is just formulaic, low stakes and a boring watch - it's only redeeming quality is the humour.

I hate debating who should and shouldn't win awards. Yes I watch most of the awards shows and sometimes my faves win and sometimes they don't but it should never be forgotten that awards are subjective. You can't get into the minds of those given the authority to vote in these awards to understand why they voted the way they did. Overall it's a small group of people who determine these awards. For example, until the recent controversy about the Golden Globes, there were literally about 80 voters who determines those awards. 80 voters! Still today there's somewhere around 150 or less.

Gary Oldman deserved his Best Actor Oscar for Darkest Hour and Forrest Gump deserved its Best Picture Oscar.
Stanley Kubrick lost the Best Director Oscar for 2001: A Space Odyssey for the same reason Citizen Kane lost the Best Picture Oscar: both films were very divisive when they first came out. In Citizen Kane's case, it was seen as a mockery of media mogul William Randolph Hearst, whom many Academy voters were terrified of.
The film that actually deserved to beat The Artist for Best Picture was Hugo, Martin Scorsese's first and so far only family-friendly film.

I love Goodfellas, It's one of my top 10 movies, and I absolutely think Marty should have won in 1991, but Dances With Wolves gets WAY too much hate, and was absolute worthy. I also find it funny that the people say Citizen Cain should have won largely because of how it changed movie making completely overlook that is the reason Forrest Gump won in 1995. Even without its technological advancements it was worthy of a nomination, but those same advancement are what pushed it over the top. Shawshank and Pulp Fiction were defiantly worthy, they just didn't have that edge.

BTS losing Best Recording Package (and frankly not being nominated at all for the actual music) of Love Yourself: Tear was another travesty. The fact that that artwork not only had 4 different variations but that they all tied in to both the previous and successive album designs to form a single 12-tile storytelling image and the way it lost to A SOLID RED SQUARE was a travesty. They are long overdue for their Grammy but we all know the Recording Academy will never give it to them because they're Korean.

Judi Dench losing to Helen Hunt in 1997/1998. ANY of the other nominees (Julie Christie, Kate Winslet, Helena Bonham Carter) would have been more deserving than Hunt, whose male co-stars overshadow her in every scene in As Good As It Gets. But Dench was especially brilliant in Mrs. Brown. That award should have been hers to lose.
Okay, The Golden Compass may have been a terrible movie, but Transformers was way worse. I didn't realize this decision was controversial.

Perception is one of the most powerful tool in a human being and in Society. Sure your taste is different, your choice is different, every human is different especially in the perception of Art and Media. Award members have their taste in Art so does the public but you can't agree on both terms. Sometimes you need perception on every detail before making a decision. That implies on picking the right winner based on their peers.

Ariana Grande not winning a single Grammy for Thank u, Next does not sit with me, it may not be controversial but Billie Eilish wanted to refuse her AOTY Grammy because she was hoping Ariana Grande would win. It sucks.
And the Saving Private Ryan getting beaten out by Shakespeare in Love was a MESS! It still pisses me off to this day!

I heard because Pacino boycotted 45th Academy Award Ceremony for he only was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for Godfather (his Golden Globe nomination was for Best Actor, it never went well with Academy for long many years. I always thought they had to award him some point and it happened to be Scent of a Woman.

Wow! In reading the comments, I guess I'm the only person who didn't like Brokeback Mountain. I found it lazy, boring, the acting subpar, and the story was just whatever, I couldn't find myself rooting for the main characters. I was just let down when it ended. I've never understood the love for this movie.

U2 upstages Mariah Carey's biggest comeback at the 2006 Grammy Awards. Having the largest-selling album, The Emancipation of Mimi,
and single, We Belong Together of 2005. Instead, U2 got the glory, as the group captured five Grammy awards for How to Dismantle An Atomic Bomb, including album of the year.

The only award show I care about is the Academy Awards.
I love SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE, but SAVING PRIVATE RYAN is the better movie that shouldve won Best Picture. When it comes to FORREST GUMP, its better than PULP FICTION in my opinion, but Best Picture shouldve went to THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION.

The only reason Shakespeare in Love won best picture was because of one manHarvey Weinstein. He strongarmed the Academy so hard that they gave in to voting for that movie. Now that hes behind bars for the rest of his increasingly decrepit life, he can never do it again.

Grace Kelly beating out Judy Garland for Best Actress at the 27th Academy Awards in 1955. And if we throw in the Golden Globes, Barbra Streisand as Best Director in 1983 and Pia Zadora as New Star of the Year (a category now discontinued) in 1981.

When it comes to the academy, they always prefer historical works so they always tend to win. Granted I wont give any of the movies mentioned any shade but some of them really deserved the award compared to the actual winners

Fans of Oscar nominated films need to understand their opinion of which film should win best picture, doesn't mean anything. At the end of the day they should just accept their faviourite film didn't win and get over it.

Unholy beating out My Universe at this year's Grammys. It's a Duo/Group award, stop giving it to collabs. Those should either have their own category or be excluded completely.

Very debatable list. Based on very personal opinions. Gary Oldman and Forrest Gump did deserve their awards. In such a case, you totally forgot the award to Crash as best picture.
