These Disney side characters possess main character energy. For this list, well be looking at Disney characters who might not be billed in the principal role but definitely think they are. Our countdown includes The Lion King, Moana, Turning Red, and more! Which non-main Disney character do YOU think deserves the spotlight?

For me, side characters with main character energy are:
Jessie from Toy Story, because it even she has a very sad story, also I love her personality
Timon and Pumba from The Lion King, for his charisma, personality and also they add well to the story, who doesn't like them?
Dory from Finding Nemo, that it even has a story to explore
Isabela Madrigal, with her song What else can I do and we know her more thoroughly. Although in Encanto there are many characters with whom we can empathize (Luisa, Abuela Madrigal, Bruno, so many also have the energy of the main character
The Genie, for his charisma and because to the end he is also the one who gets his happy ending: being free
Sebastian from The Little Mermaid, because even in The Little Mermaid 3 the villain does not go after the protagonist Ariel but for him, also he narrates the story at the beginning and end
Mushu, who shares as much screen time as the protagonist Mulan and has his own mission together with her
and others.
Even Dory and Timon and Pumba HAD THEIR OWN MOVIES

I'm actually glad you put the Genie on #1. The legendary Robin Williams truly did a fantastic job. It's said that he did more than 50 impersonations during the movie. This is also apparent in the 1989 movie Dead Poets Society where he plays the role of John Keating, an English teacher whose teaching methods are totally different from the ones he was expected to have at the all - boys school where he was teaching, serving as an inspiration to the boys. And again, he steals the spotlight with his acting performance. If you haven't seen the movie, then I highly recommend you to.

To be honest, Carlos from descendants had awesome main character energy. He has one of the best character arcs in the series, from being the silly, childish, scardey-cat, runt, to being one of the bravest, and most powerful VKs in all of the Isle. (In my opinion he solos the verse. He is a great character, and is obviously the most loveable one too. RIP Cameron and much love.

Wonder if The baroness from Cruella should be an honorable mention since she an interesting villain yep Gaston is definitely a spotlight hog of course The genie would be number 1 there development for a prequel of him and Scar would probably get his time to shine in the upcoming Mufasa film since it would be about both brothers and if anything Maui sees Moana as his sidekick

Tigger
Winnie the Pooh franchise
The yellow stuffed bear Winnie the Pooh maybe the titular character in most of his films, but the one and only Tigger bounces in the spotlight! This energetic tiger is probably the most heroic creature in the hundred acre wood and is bouncing or bouncing on anyone everywhere he goes, he even has his own movie and catchy theme song!

The Genie will always be the best Disney side character, but Mushu and Maui came close. And if I had to choose someone to add to the list, it would probably be Maleficent. She steals the show everytime she's on screen with her deliciously malicious presence. A strong female character who knows exactly what she wants and will do whatever it takes to get it.

MY FAVORITES:
Genie - Aladdin
Mushu - Mulan
Yzma - The Emperor's New Groove
Charlotte La Bouff - The Princess and the Frog
Maui - Moana
Abby - Turning Red
Edna Mode - The Incredibles franchise
Olaf - Frozen franchise
Dory - Finding Nemo
Isabela Madrigal - Encanto

I'd say Camila from the Owl House has main character energy. Sure, she didn't get enough screen time, (thanks a lot Bob Chapeck) but she was able to make the most out of it. She is a caring mother who loves her daughter, but she was just like Luz growing up.

Abby would definitely be a Rabbit due to her Energy.
Also Vee would be interesting as a Protagonist. Her story could work in Mental Health and itd be interesting to see how she handles things in the Human World.
Also Nos-4-A2 from the Buzz Lightyear Show.

Heres some Disney side characters with main character energy.
Mater - Cars
Boo - Monsters Inc.
Dory - Finding Nemo
Dot - A Bugs Life
EVE - WALL-E
Buck - Home on the Range
Chef Skinner - Ratatouille
Rutt and Tuke - Brother Bear

Mushu is the long-lost son of Donkey and Dragon (despite these characters not precisely belonging to the same studios Mulan was only before the Shrek franchise at the time) at least both Mushu and Donkey are lovable in their own special loyal ways

Having anyone other than Genie for the Number One Spot would be a flat-out slap-in-the-face.
Nobody could duplicate what Robin Williams brought to the character, not even The Fresh Prince who slapped Chris Rock.

Raya may have gotten first billing, but they're both title characters and the deuteragonists of the film. I think this makes them both the main characters along the same lines as Elsa and Anna or Judy and Nick.
reply

This list has a very narrow definition of 'main character. ' There are quite a few people on this list I would consider as equal stature with their 'main character' constituents.
reply

I wouldn't really consider villains as side characters. Side characters are supporting roles. Villians are part of the plot. Side characters are part of the lore but not the plot.
reply

Charlotte LaBouff doesn't even get an honorable mention? What the heck? I know Ray is voiced by Jim Cummings, but Lottie still had WAY more main character energy than he did.
reply

Do Flora, Fauna, and Meriwether not count due to them essentially stealing main character status away from the titular character in Disney's version of Sleeping Beauty?
reply

Antauri From Super Robot Monkey Team Hyper Force Go! (2004 - 2006) besides being a good mentor to Chiro he goes through a Tommy Oliver-esqe transition which was cool
reply

What about bianca and Bernard from the rescuers and the rescuers down under? These two mice had more main character energy than Ratatouilles' father and family.
reply

I cant believe that Maleficent and Jafar didnt get mentioned here on this list I mean they have a lot of side energy and share many similarities with each other!

Disney + Ms Mojo = the best video ever. happy saturday Ms Mojo and i hope to see you soon for more like this, take care, and greetings from Colombia.
reply

I feel like Tigger should have been on the list. Not only is he bouncy, flouncy, trouncy, and pouncy and fun fun fun fun fun but hes also the only one.
reply

How about Timon and Pumbaa they are Simba's sidekicks in The Loin King they have their own spinoff series on Disney Afternoon back in the 90s.
reply

When his brother has the audacity to reproduce XD
Also Edna Mode was probably my favorite pick for the list. Glad to see her there.

reply

I AM THE POWERFUL THE PLEASURABLE THE INDESTRUCTIBLE mushu
Hes the best thing in the Mulan. Happy that Eddie Murphy voiced the character.

reply

It makes sense that Isabela has that energy. She was made to appear like the typical Disney princess. and expected to be as popular as one.
reply

Why are so many of these characters the villain? The title CLEARLY implies one of the good guys. The villains deserve their own dang list.
reply

TBH, Wilbur from Meet the Robinsons felt more like the main character than Lewis at some points. He arguably had just a big story arc.
reply

Ngl, I thought, after seeing the Trailers for Moana, I thought that Maui was the main character and Moana and Maui were married
reply

So great to have side characters that brightens up the mood, even necessary if the main character/story turns too serious.
