Top 10 Movies from the Rom-Com Golden Age

Rating: 4.0; Vote: 1
These are the movies that defined the rom-com golden age. For this list, well be looking at the best romantic comedies released between 1990 and 2005. Our countdown includes Groundhog Day, Pretty Woman, Clueless, and more! What's YOUR favorite golden age rom-com?
Date: 2023-11-21

Comments and reviews: 30

problematic age gap can you please stop being obnoxious in shaming Richard Gear? For one in 1990 was 41, he was young, fit and a heartthrob. Julia was 23, and in the role she was a streetwalker. How is this not even mentioned?
And I can see you're about to forget other much better movies, like:
- Runaway Bride
- Blast from the Past
- Cutting Edge
- Excess of Baggage
- Seven Days and Seven Nights
- Loser
- The Wedding Singer
- The Mirror has two faces
- Ella Enchanted
- Ever After
- Never Been Kissed
- Drive Me Crazy (you included 10 things I hate about you, I like but Drive me Crazy is better )
- The Wedding Date
If this was called the most hyped (save some few exceptions like While you're sleeping, Bridget Jones and My Big Fat Greek Wedding)

I LOVE 10 Things I Hate About You and Clueless. Those should stay on the list or even move up the list.
I would remove the movies you listed as top 10 to honorable mention:
1. Sleepless in Seattle
2. Groundhog Day
3. Four Weddings and a Funeral
4. Maybe even Notting Hill
Add these to the top 10:
1. While You Were Sleeping
2. Only You
3. The Wedding Singer
Honorable mentions:
4. Someone Like You
5. For Roseanna
6. Jerry MaGuire (even though some argue it is not a romcom, but I like it even if Rene Zs character was just a wet noodle)
Not a fan of Love Actually as to me, its not something I can watch again and again.

reply

Sorry, but NO! This is the first time that I just dont agree with you! Four Weddings and a Funeral is a good one, but not better than Pretty Woman which was your number 6, just NO! And Bridget Jones Diary no way! Its a horrible movie which I have tried to watch many, many times and I just couldnt! You are missing some of the best ones out there: Sweet Home Alabama, How to Loose a Guy in Ten Days, Only You, Maid in Manhattan The Wedding Planner, The American President, The Wedding Date, just to name a few that are much better than Bridget Jones!
reply

Ive recently watched Four Weddings and A Funeral for the first time and I found this movie to be kind of overrated, I really didnt buy the romance since Andy Macdowell character is pretty much the worst! acting wise and personality wise! so I really dont understand how this movie ended up at first place! Im sorry but all the other movies on this list are way better then that movie also clueless shouldve been higher, Ive watched that movie like a million times and its still holds up and never gets boring.

You've Got Mail is probably my favorite of all time with Love Actually the follow-up. The others are also great, but I watch YGM at least every other month. I'm a bookstore lover, so I'm sure that plays a huge role, along with my undying love of the Hanks and Ryan duo in their films. Further, I think email back then was as close to letter writing as one could get. I actually miss the AOL dial-up and iconic, You've Got Mail.
reply

oof. 10 things and 4 weddings are 2 of the most overrated romcoms, not just in this specified era. with 10 things, the development of the romance feels forced. and that scene people like, the field song - oh, so cringe. a better, underrated romcom also based on the taming of the shrew is the cutting edge. movie was made in 1991. and 4 weddings? unfunny, bland and just couldn't reach that romantic high it was aiming for
reply

I loved Clueless but it's not a RomCom, it's a teen comedy or a coming-of-age film and it shouldn't be in there. 10 Things, My Best Friend wedding and Bridget Jones aren't good enough to be in a top 10 imho. Instead, Only You should be in there. Other than that, it's only greatness, all the other movies listed are unquestionably the best RomCom of the selected period.
reply

This affirms that I'm a certified hopeless romantic. My young adult life was filled with the Golden Era of Rom-Com. I have watched each and every movie in this countdown (including the honorable mentions) multiple times. And I still rewatch them when I catch it on cable or when its available in my streaming subscription.
Ironically, I am still single

reply

I saw all of these, Bridget Jones in bits and pieces when I used to have hbo on cox cable. Please make more, I dont care if it's formulaic, i predicted everything in a tourist guide to love. I'll add how to lose a guy in 10 days, 40 days and 40 nights, the one with Matthew perry and neve Campbell, head over heels, the one with Tim robbins and Einstein.
reply

I think that WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING deserved to be in the top 10?
PRETTY WOMAN deserved to be ahead of NOTTING HILL; it may have lost the original downer ending, and had an age-gap pairing (that at least was tacitly acknowledged, but the idea that a hooker could have a happy ending did piss off the right people

reply

Not sure why Love Actually was 'Honorable Mention' and not in the top ten, as you had its writer (Richard Curtis) as your #1/2 film author. It's far better than half the top ten you picked (IMO of course.
Late Edit -- and where is Jerry McGuire? (speaking of quotable RomComs)

reply

Notting Hill is by far my favourite rom com of all time. Between the funny dialogue, Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts chemistry, and that amazing music, I can't help but smile even at the thought of that movie. And it has a goat playing a violin, just as all good love stories should.
reply

Love how so many actors have multiple appearances on your list (Julia, Meg, Andie, Hugh. At the top of their game they all knew how to deliver! As a fan of older actresses I do love Something's Gotta Give and Diane Keaton vs. Jack Nicholson in a love triangle with Keanu Reeves!
reply

10. Groundhog Day
9. 10 Things I Hate About You
8. Sleepless in Seattle
7. My Best Friend's Wedding
6. Pretty Woman
5. Bridget Jones's Diary
4. You've Got Mail
3. Clueless
2. Notting Hill
1. Four Weddings & a Funeral

reply

I just missed French Kiss in this list. I love this movie, I can re-watch it comfortably once every year, it has aged quite well, it is funny and touching. For me much better than the other Meg Ryan's movies listed in this list.
reply

What I want to know is how Pretty Woman is ranked lower than Bridget Jones' Diary and Clueless. Yes, I think Bridget Jones is funny and Clueless is teen 90's, they're both great in their way but c'mon Pretty Woman is gold.
reply

Where was When Harry Met Sally? It is so iconic, the mother of all rom coms, the ultimate golden age contender that I was convinced it would be number 1 and it didnt even get an honourable mention? Shame on you!
reply

My favorites listed in the video are While You Were Sleeping, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Notting Hill, and Groundhog Day. A few others I would add are Return to Me, Just Like Heaven, and Nine Months.
reply

If you like the Taming of the Shrew, try to see the Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton version. Type casting and wonderful for it. And I don't care for Shakespeare. But it wasn't a Rom-Com.
reply

My favorite rom coms are 10 Things I Hate About You, Notting Hill, You've Got Mail, Pretty Woman, While You Were Sleeping, and 13 Going on 30. They're such classics.
reply

This is the most terrible list from MsMojo Youve Got Mail gets a higher spot vs Sleepless in Seattle? 13 Going on 30 and Love Actually gets a honorable mentions?
reply

10 things
How is love actually not in the top 10 so wrong
My favourite is serendipity. makes me sad every time I watch it
Or the lake house

reply

Great list! These are my favorites Notting Hill, You've Got Mail, 13 Going On 30, Pretty Woman, & The Wedding Planner (not even an honorable mention)
reply

You missed out The Wedding Planner with JLo and Matthew McConaughey from 2001. it should have been at least an honorable mention.
reply

I love numbers 9, 8, 6, 4, 3, 2, and I also love My Big Fat Greek Wedding with Love Actually. I know I am a complete romantic.
reply

Also have to suggest One Fine Day and It Could Happen to You, which both should have been honorable mentions. Good list though.
reply

Sleepless in Seattle is a horrifying stalker movie. The best part about it was reminding me how pretty fishtail braids are.
reply

I don't particularly like Julia Roberts or Hugh Grant, but Notting Hill is, hands down, one of my absolute favorite movies.
reply

How to lose a guy in 10 days, starring Matthew Mcconaughey and Kate Hudson, should have had at least an honorable mention
reply

While You Were Sleeping should be in the top 10. It's not just a good rom com but also such a touching story about family.
