So glad Gene Kelly is number one on this list. He's my favourite OH actor of all time. Both Gene and Fred changed the art of dance and Hollywood musicals forever with their innovation in classic cinema. Gene Kelly's musical films are the best of all time and Singin' in the Rain is the perfect example on why I love him so much. The American in Paris ballet sequence in An American in Paris is a work of art and one of my all time favourite dance sequences ever! And I am glad Judy Garland made this list. You have not lived if you have not seen the Wizard of Oz legendary film and I loved her in Meet me in St. Louis what a wonderful actress she was and I also loved the three films that she did with Gene Kelly; For me and my Gal, The Pirate and Summer Stock.

Excuse ME, YOU DIDN'T MENTION MS. DOROTHY DANDRIDGE Simply IRRESISTIBLE and TALENTED. AND THE DANCING TEAM, THE NICHOLAS BROTHERS, WHO COULD DO IT ALL, AS FAR AS DANCING WAS CONCERNED. WHO COULD DO A SPLITS, GOING DOWNSTAIRS, NO HOLLYWOOD DANCER COULD EVER DO THAT. THE BEST IN THE BUSINESS. AND THE UNFORGETTABLE Mr. SAMMY DAVIS JR. HE COULD, ACT, SING, DANCE, PLAY INSTRUMENTS, DO IMPRESSIONS, AND WAS CONSIDER THE FASTEST DRAWING A GUN OUT OF HIS HOSTLER, TWIRLS, AND PUT IT IN BOTH HOSTLER, NOW THAT'S A TRIPLE THREAT, DON'T YOU THINK SO. MR. ENTERTAINER OF ALL TIME!

I'm not sure you understand the definition of a triple threat. They are trained dancers as well as actors and singers. Fr example, Julie Andrews is brilliant and a legend, but she's not a triple threat since she's not a trained dancer. Generally, a Trip could be cast in a role requiring a dance solo or significant dancing. Kelly, Rogers, Astaire, Moreno, Maclaine, Minnelli, Reynolds, Miller, Caron, etc.
Again, don't want to downplay the brilliance of some of the people on your list - just not sure tis is their list. Lot's of great singer / actors.

Judy is the Queen to Kelly's King. No actor/singer/dancer/comedian/performer ever gave more to their audiences than she did, for 45 of her 47 years. From vaudeville to radio, from movies to concerts, Judy remains the standard for anyone who follows her. Some may occasionally hit the mark, but no one comes close to her sustained excellence. Judy is the Mount Rushmore of entertainment all by herself.

This is one of the few times I think I can truly say, you got this EXACTLY right! From the moment I saw the topic I suspected Gene Kelly would be at the top. Extra kudos for recognizing Bill Robinson and Lena Horne, as similar lists might have left them off merely because they weren't as big of stars back in the day in a system completely rigged against them.
reply

Hugs her stuffed Toto and Toto 2 (too. Happy Judy is on the list as deserved. Not as known as her vocals, but she danced with Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire among others and held her own. (Was the lead in Gene Kelly's FIRST movie. First time her name was shown above the title. The list is amazing with everyone on it, though, of course.

I knew Gene was number one and I hate it. He was amazing, but his ego needed to be kicked down a few notches. The fact that he seems to be better than Debbie Reynolds and Donald OConnor (shame on yall for not including him in the honorable mention) just annoys me. The man was nowhere near as fluid as Fred or Donald.

I'm such a spoiled child as I grew up in the glow of all of these wonderful performers! My absolute favorite will always be Danny Kaye! I've introduced my children to most if not all of them. As a result my youngest daughter's 'Hollywood Hottie' is Bing Crosby! I didn't see Bob Hope anywhere though, and I feel that he should be.

Hayworth, Robinson, Andrews, and Rogers, Astaire, Garland, and Kelly star in a science fiction space thriller. A group of scientists lands on a newly discovered planet and are tasked with terraforming it. They discover the endemic alien species can only communicate through tap dancing code or song. It becomes a musical.
reply

Awesome list! However, as glorious as Ms Hayworth was, most of her singing numbers in her movies were dubbed by others. So everybody can mentally pop their preferred artist into the vacant space. Cover Girl with Hayworth and Kelly is excellent! Gene Kelly did a whole competitive dance against himself! Groundbreaking!
reply

Rita Hayworth didn't do her own singing. a talented movie star, but not a triple threat.
If you consider stage and TV musical performers who had some musical film output you could add in Angela Lansbury (her performance on stage in Mame showcased this, Gwen Verdon (4 time Tony winner) or Debbie Allen.

Lena Horne was ignored by Hollywood for many years, only given singing spots in movies that could be cut out so as not to offend some of the people of the Deep South. It wasn't until 1969 that she got a good movie role with Richard Widmark, someone who also supported the career of Sidney Poitier.

The biggest meeting-someone thrill of my life was meeting Julie Andrews at a book convention in 2000. Standing on the other side of the counter, all I could think was, I am standing three feet away from Mary Frickin Poppins! She looked amazing and was as charming as I had always imagined.
reply

I would add Jimmy Stewart; actor, singer, dancer. He didnt have the best voice but his interpretation was so good that he was often given songs to introduce in movies and then passed to other professional singers.
reply

Ms. Mojo, you made a very good list of triple-threat performers. You did forget Ann Sheridan. She was an outstanding dramatic actress, comedienne, singer, and dancer. She was one of the great stars of Classic Hollywood.
reply

Well since you're asking. Danny Key, three times over. I miss his energy, humor and unparalleled ability with tongue twisters on screens today (though I honestly can't think of a specific role I'd like to see him in)
reply

If I had to pick any of these legends and put them in any movie of my choice you cant tell me I cant pick gene Kelly and Judy Garland for La La Land it is too frikkin easy and TOTALLY something they would do!
reply

While I think that Gene Kelly is a PHENOMENAL dancer and an ok singer, acting-wise, gonna be honest, I feel like I almost never see a single thought behind that man's eyes. Judy Garland is my top pick!
reply

Hello! Where is Frank Sinatra? He could dance as well as Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire could sing and though I love everybody on your list, I think that you missed the boat with more than a few.
reply

I know you love Ann Miller and Vera-Ellen, but Cyd Charisse was an amazing dancer and actress and could sing. I love Rita Hayworth and, while she could sing, her songs were generally dubbed.
reply

Your list is great! You did leave out Sammy Davis, Jr, Doris Day, and the often-overlooked Ann Sheridan, who was as iconic to Classic Hollywood as Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, and Judy Garland.
reply

Rita Hayworth was not a triple threat. She was dubbed in all her movies, but did sing one song at the end of Gilda. Rita Moreno can sing but was also partially dubbed in West Side Story.
reply

There are several folks who should be knocked down to also ran because both Gwen Virdon and Chita Rivera need to be on your list. Bing Crosby a dancer? Nope. Carol Burnett a dancer? Nope.
reply

Leslie Caron is one of them too un my opinion. Daddy long legs, an american in Paris, etc. and others films prove it. Maybe should you consider her in a other list?
reply

I was watching a documentary on Gene Kelly's career and one of the ladies had said, You give your heart to Fred Astaire, but you save your body for Gene Kelly
reply

You missed a lot of great stars Jane Powell, Howard Keel, Katherine Grayson, Shirley Temple, Shirley Mcclaine. And i would of put Fred Astaire first.
reply

Love Judy, Lena, Doris, and Gene k. But putting Dick Van Dyke and not Sammy Davis Jr? This is really criminal. You guys need to kick some rocks
reply

No Howard Keel? No June Allyson? No Katherine Grayson? You need AT LEAST a 2nd list for the Classics, plus one more for the 60's and 70's.
reply

I love Lena Horne, but I question her third threat - not a dancer. And Judy Garland was a stronger singer and actor than Gene Kelly.
reply

All great examples but there were so many more. A good example is Donald O'Connor who could sing, dance, & act with the best of them.
