To me a girl who just adores musicals there's quite a few missing on your list it to me.
THE KING AND I'S: I WHISTLE A HAPPY TUNE
TO ME EVITA'S FIRST REAL SONG IS OH WHAT A CIRCUS MEDLEY WITH THE REQUIEM OF EVITA.
MY FAIR LADY'S: WHY CAN'T THE ENGLISH
HELLO DOLLY'S: JUST LEAVE EVERYTHING TO ME
THE GREATEST SHOWMAN'S: A MILLION DREAMS
ANNIE GET YOUR GUN'S: IT COMES NATURALLY
SEVEN BRIDE'S FOR SEVEN BROTHER'S: BLESS YOUR BEAUTIFUL HIDE.
AND HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL'S: START OF SOMETHING NEW!
I ONLY AGREE WITH YOU WITH THE SOUND OF MUSIC & GOOD MORNING BALTIMORE!

It's a good list and I'm glad that you're going as far back as On the Town (as opposed to only concentrating on more recent films) but you've committed a tremendous mistake by omitting the opening to that which many film historians consider the greatest movie musical of all time: Love Me Tonight, from 1932. Yes, 1932! The opening sequence is nearly 4 minutes of percussive street noises of early-morning Paris, and it's nothing short of genius. The sequence of Isn't It Romantic? (in the same film) is also stunningly fantastic.

I watched this with my 17-year-old daughter, after watching West Side Story itself (the original; we're re-watching the new one tomorrow. She mentioned that she was surprised that they would get #1, because it's an opening song that is completely different from the others listed, because it has NO LYRICS. (Side note: I saw WSS for the first time when I was about 10, and I'm 58 now, so I've seen it many, many times since, but watching it today, there were things I noticed for the first time)

When I saw Sound of Music and the incomparable Julie Andrews in #2 I was wondering who got the top spot, and it was not a disappointment. The original West Side Story prologue is so powerful in its storytelling using just music (superb) and dance (spellbinding. Just filming that prologue took so much time, effort and money during the production that it is no wonder how spectacular the end result was and why we do not get to see anything like it since then.

i really liked thoroughly modern millie from the movie thoroughly modern millie starring julie andrews. even though its not technically a musical there is a lot of singing in it- darling lili. it is another julie andrews movie about spies during wwi and it opens with julie singing whistling away the dark and by the end of the scene (its a bunch of songs) theyve introduced her and set the scene in the middle of a bombing

Hit the nail on the head with all your top picks, except I wouldn't have included Grease. It's not an opening number to the film, it's a Credit Song. There's a difference. MsMojo, you've done enough posts to understand film and the point I'm getting at. Your honourable mentions are way off with the exception of Fiddler and Tick Tick Boom. The rest of the honourable mentions are complete garbage for various reasons.

Look Down is a great number but not from the movie version. Every time they show Crowe it reminds me how much better they could have made it had they used one of the many who could carry Javert's songs well. Surprised to see Heaven on their Minds on there. One of my favourites but so often overlooked. I loved The is The Greatest Show but they showed so very little of the song. Wish they'd extended it.

Love the video. Congrats. I think the great Julie Andrews in the super classic The Sound of Music opening should be number 1 as the incredible opening in West Side Story is not really a song, just music. The haunting Whistling Away the Dark by Julie Andrews again deserves an honorable mention. The charismatic John Travolta doesn't sing Staying Alive, but it really is a great opening number.

I absolutely love On The Town, and I'm so thrilled it made the list, but technically the first song is sung by the dock worker: I feel like I'm not out of bed yet. maybe it doesn't count because it's a fragment/too short? Also DEFINITELY would've made this a Top 20 - I was really shocked to see Tradition and In the Heights as only Honorable Mentions!

Rocky Horror Picture Show and Little Shop of Horrors both beat out Hairspray. And Oklahoma is a horrible musical and shouldn't be on ANY best list. I've tried watching it more than 5 times and I almost never last past the intermission. I keep thinking Everyone says this is a great musical, it must get better. Nope, never gets better.
reply

I think Sound of Music should be number 1 and Good Morning Baltimore (the 2007 version) should be at least Number 2. Also Tradition and Look Down (Les Mis) also should be in the top 5 as well. Because those are all MY top favourite opening numbers!

As a movie musical A CHORUS LINE is awful - too many changes from the stage show - especially the focus of What I Did For Love. However, the opening number is great.
Also missing from this list the the opening sequence to HELLO DOLLY!

I'm disappointed that La La Land was classed as an also-ran.
I'd also have voted for the opening to All That Jazz (the song On Broadway with the dancers auditioning) - the Bob Fosse movie with Roy Scheider playing the lead.

Wow! I can practically smell the backstage in Cabaret! If you've ever done live theatre, the sense of claustrophobic confinement is smothering. On the other hand, I can almost smell the clear, Alpine air in The Sound of Music.
reply

Me the whole time: I swear if Alexander Hamilton isn't on this list, I'm suing
On a real note, I am glad they included a Tick Tick Boom song, I LOVED that one

How could you skip Perfect Day? From Legally Blonde? Is it great cinema, no, but the song is one of the best, most energizing opening songs in movie history.
reply

Thoroughly Modern Millie didn't even make HonMen, and with Julie Andrews at the helm! The Happiest Millionaire's 'Fortuosity' wasn't half bad either
reply

I'm disappointed that Tradition' only got an honorable mention. It is vibrant, alive, and introduces the main characters as well as their culture.
reply

Sorry, but anyone in their right mind would chose The Sound of Music's opening as the absolute best. And I doubt there will ever be a better one!
reply

How is Seasons of Love not on this list! I mean I know its not the opening song in the stage show but it should count since it opened the movie
reply

My Dad would wake up me and my brothers with Oh What A Beautiful Morning. He passed in 1984. But I still smile every time I hear this song.
reply

If you could skip to skid row instead of the prologue I would say little shop of horrors but the prologue isn't good enough so no go
reply

I cant argue with anything on the list, but Im a little surprised that The Greatest Show didnt at least Merritt an honorable mention.
reply

Shame not to see food glorious food from Oliver and whip whack away from calamity Jane plus bugsy Malone prologue not listed classics
reply

I watched this entire video telling myself if West Side Story wasn't number 1, I would never trust another Mojo top 10 again!
reply

Prologue and opening to Little Shop of Horrors - Overture sequence sets the stage into Fugue for Tinhorns from Guys and Dolls.
reply

You lost me the moment you announced Oh what a beautiful morning in the number 10 spot. That is, and always should be number 1.
reply

You forgot to include the super amazing opening of Thoroughly Modern Millie with a magnetic performance by Julie Andrews!
reply

Loved all the picks for this video, but one that wasn't in would definitely be the opening song from The Greatest Showman.
reply

Food, Glorious Food, from Oliver!
This is Halloween, from The Nightmare Before Christmas
Footloose, from Footloose
