'Some Like it Hot' is really excellent comedy. It's based on some real life events too, with the shooting in Chicago, prohibition times, and so on. Marilyn Monroe is no great actress but this is the right type of film for her and she has a good singing voice as evident in 'The River of No Return' too. Here, listen to the sadness of 'I'm through with love'.
'Roman Holiday' is also high class. At the time when it was first showing, it was thrilling that it was really filmed in Rome, instead of on those silly Hollywood stages. On the dvd, there is interesting extra material. For instance, they got real Italian aristocrats to take part in the party scene at the embassy, the Italian ladies wearing their own real jewels!
I cannot at all understand 'Casablanca' being on the top of ANY list. Mish-mash, not very well worked out plot.

For me the definitive romance of all time was An Affair to Remember, with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. Sleepless in Seattle, was based on this movie. It was clever and unabashedly sentimental. a thing of beauty. Another movie that impacts our speech even today was Gaslight with Ingrid Bergman and Joseph Cotten. My fave is Portrait of Jennie, a movie that transcends time and place.

The movies prior to 1980 hv magic. I was born on 1956, there were many satisfying memories watching movies as I grew up. Today movies are more technical, yet less involving.
I love Guys and Dolls, Daddy long legs and most Fred Astaire movies, My fair lady, the Sound of music, and of course Singing in the Rain, Brigadoon.

1967 we went to the Esquire Theater, Pasadena to see a film I knew nothing about. The film was TWO FOR THE ROAD. Afterwards we only talked about the time jump edits and the performances of Audrey Hepburn and Albert Finney. If you haven't seen it, see it. If you've seen it, see it again. It's more than worth the journey.

O gosh! Another 10 best movies list, when are you gonna realize that there is no such truth to that statement. Way way too many great films were made. You could pick 500 from the 1930s 1940s 1950s and so on. That makes more sense. Just picking 10 and saying the greatest or best is a joke

I will never forget the first time I saw Wizard of Oz in colour. We had a black and white TV before then. I was never really impressed by West Side Story. It is terribly dated. If I want Romeo and Juliet, I watch Zeffirelli. His film is as fresh today as it was in 69. I adored Olivier.

Well, top 10 lists like these will always generate disagreement, (personally I have thoroughly enjoyed all the movies on this list)but one thing I think everyone on this comment section can agree on is that they sure made lots of really great movies back in the day!

A friend of mine who was in Cassablanca told me that in Cassablanca there is a bar called Rick's Cafe and the employes say to the tourists that is the very same bar where the movie Cassablanca was filmed. But of course the entire movies was filmed in Hollywood.

I remember taking a film class in College. and all the young(er) kids laughing at the effects in Casablanca. But by the time the movie ended, you could've heard a pin drop. they were so invested in the story. It was quite something to witness!

Hard to argue with some of them, but not being a fan of musicals, there are some I would change. I really like the Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Key Largo and The African Queen. On reflection, it make be look a Bogart fan. which I am

Do take a look at Hitchcock's Notorious of 1947 with Ingrid Bergman and Cary Grant; it's here on You Tube and should have at least made an honorable mention. The longest screen kiss up to that point, and, of course, trademark suspense.

At least an Honorable Mention should be given to the historic dance duo of Fred Astair and Ginger Rogers movies, and the singing sweethearts of the 1930's, Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy. Their best film was Maytime in my opinion.

My favorite is still Casablanca, every twitch, every moody moment. My least is Wizard of Oz; once you read what the actors went through physically, and how messed up Judy Garland became it kinda takes the frosting off the cake.

I have lived in the States for four and a half years. And my feeling was made up that, apart from Gone with the wind, the most lovely American movie is Miracle on 34th Street. It is really a great movie!

Mr. Roberts never makes these lists but its one of my favorites. I think Citizen Kane is overrated, bored me to tears, well filmed, just didnt like the characters and poor pacing.

It Happened One Night is NOT a pre-code masterpiece. The Code was adopted in 1930 and by 1934, the year of It Happened, was being rigidly enforced.
