Seriously, these stars were told they weren't pretty enough? For this list, well be looking at notable celebrities who were given a crude piece of advice at a young age. Our countdown includes Kristen Bell, Lea Michele, Pink, and more! What do YOU make of beauty standards in Hollywood?

In Spanish there is a saying that says that there are no ugly women, just ones that don't gussie themselves up. Every female is inherently beautiful, but needs to be put together: clothes, hair, makeup, tidy etc, in whatever amount or combo thereof, and she's good to go. Just being the best version of yourself. All of the women in this video are beautiful and more so, when you see their personalities shine through their characters. There was a famous actress Susan Saint James who was auditioning for the movie, Love at First Bite, who was told she was not beautiful enough for the part of the leading lady. She responded I can act beautiful. She got the part. It works. I have seen women who acted beautiful, with charm and grace, who elevated their beauty. Confidence is another beautifier.

Look, Hollywood specializes in tearing down people to their core (you're too fat, you're too thin, you're ugly, you need plastic surgery, you're boobs are too big; they're too small. They love to laud some pretty hideous people too (they protect predators and they protect no-talent people and uplift them and screw over great people. I don't like to talk about people's physical appearance publicly. I may think stuff, but let's do it here. Gwyneth Paltrow is pretty, NOT beautiful. Please stop over complimenting people. She is hideous as a person, so whatever.

No artist worth a canvas wants to draw or paint or sculpt a super model. Perfection is boring in art. It is quirkiness and individuality that creates the greatest beauty. Who remembers the surgically perfected chorus actors, and who remembers Barbra Streisand? Who remembers the beach bunnies and who remembers the star of Beaches Bette Midler? Who remembers Frida Kahlo's eyebrows and the Mona Lisa's enigmatic half-smile and Sammy Davis Junior's, well, everything. Answer: We all do! I wish Hollywood would get this through their collecive heads!

Hollywood beauty standards leave us with terrible performances because people get hired for face and not talent. People break through, but so many get cast without acting chops and skills because they fit a cookie cutter. The ugly people with skills should only be seen as humans with skills. Ive noticed that British actors that make it are normal looking people with super acting skills. Stop praising the fleeting young, thin untalented people. Bad movies could have been made better by real acting talent and people that care about the craft.

Being not pretty enough to be in a leading role in a rom com or soap opera means you'll have a much longer career lifetime as a working actor. Not only do actors in leading roles age out in their 20s, styles in preferred beauty types change so quickly that even the most beautiful actors by one standard may be out of style the very next season. People judged only by beauty come to feel that beauty is all they have to offer which is not just a predictor of career death but actual death as well. Not worth it!

woow Meryl Streep is such a classy, elegant and beautyfull lady.
All of these ladies are beautyfull.
I was most chocked by Reese witherspoon and Jennifer Lawrence.
And I think Lady Gaga is such a beauty.
I was bullied to true school that I was ugly. But I never gave in.
Embrace your uniquenece.

It's not really a list to add anyone to, but the amazing Brittany Murphy was told that she wasn't pretty enough to star in romcoms or leading lady parts? Though she stole every film she was in. She was SO talented as an actress, comedian and singer. She became very successful but her insecurities about her looks and weight led to a lot of problems and bad decisions that contributed to her downfall and demise.

Never considered a nose job despite hints. Told i look like Penelope Cruz. But i know my nose is longer. My reasoning is this nose goes with my strong, forceful personality. Im big enough to carry it off. Conventional beauty is boring. I love Margot Robbie because she's such an interesting and down to earth person. Fav actress has to be Kathy Bates because she acts even if she has to look frumpy.

Where's the Top 20 men? Oh yeah. Although I know height, or lack thereof, was often their version of Not Beautiful Enough. And like these women, people such as Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise - and many others - had the last laugh. (Though I wonder whether - probably unlike most of these women - the careers of those casting directors were destroyed once the men did make it. Just a thought: .

It just goes to show movie producers can be really short sighted. Jennifer Grey listened to those voices and went ahead with the rhinoplasty and it ruined her career. Once you cut up someone's face you can't undo it so be careful. If someone doesn't like your face, find someone who does. Personally I have had a crush on Barbra Steisand partly because of her nose.

I was surprised to see Winona Ryder on this list because I always thought she was very pretty. When I first saw the 1994 adaptation of Little Women and saw that she was Jo March, I first thought she would be too good looking to play Jo. But Ryder was excellent as Jo, especially in her scenes with Gabriel Byrne as Professor Bhaer.

It makes me so upset how even in the world of Hollywood ( just like in the regular world) all opinions of women are solely based on their physical appearance. i mean just because a woman might look like Whoopi Goldberg or be as dark skinned as Viola Davis does that also mean that she's also not as talented as them also? ( Ijs)
reply

I have little doubt every one of these women where told this stuff. They were especially told by women motivated for the same reasons so many women (both literally and figuratively) played wingman for slime like Harvey Weinstein. They were trying to hinder, remove, or utterly destroy their competition/possible replacements.

Hollywood and the world really are pretty ignorant about the way women look but not men. I think a well done SUBTLE nose job can really be an improvement (Ashley Simpson) for some if they choose. But I say F off to the rest. Anything I had done would be my choice. If I was told to do anything I'd be unlikely to do it.

Disappointed at the coverage of Oscar winner, movie lead actor, Viola Davis in this piece. Perhaps it was assumed that viewers know her CV, but it would have been nice to hear (just as was done for the previous women featured) how Ms. Davis didnt allow detractors to stop her and her incredible talent.

I never have considered human beings to be very attractive, in comparison to other animals on earth. We have no multi-colors to our skins, we have no fur, or hair to speak of, no beautifully colored feathers. I'm sorry we are the low end when it comes to what I consider beauty.
reply

I would NEVER survive in the movie star business. I cant get past letting what others think of me bothering me.
If I woke up one day and saw I was in a magazine as the LEAST ATTRACTIVE male in Hollywood like Sarah Jessica Parker, the next day's paper would read I had died.

reply

Yeah, Viola is not the classic tv lead. She is a world class gorgeous classic MOVIE lead. Sure Kerry is beautiful, but it is a shame when people already give a person a strike for having darker skin. She can't pass so of course she is not considered beautiful, right? Geez.
reply

These women, while all beautiful, have very characterful faces, which ironically makes them perfect for actresses. I imagine they werent considered cookie cutter enough for the bland 2Dimensional characters Hollywood execs think are all women are good for.
reply

Hollywood is full of short, balding, overweight, pudgy producers, directors, agents, and studio heads. in other words, a bunch of ugly trolls telling beautiful women they aren't good enough for film. Hello! Have you seen Harvey Weinstein?
reply

I'll be honest I can see how this would be with all of these girls. Hollywood is brutal. You have to be extraordinary, or striking ideally. it's not that they are calling them ugly. However there's many girls way less attractive than these
reply

The worst part of all this is that there are hundreds of MALE actors who were given parts based on character and talent but not much in the looks department. And often too old for the part and/or the actress they were paired with!
reply

Every single one of these women are absolutely beautiful, but Minka Fcking Kelly? She's literally one of the most gorgeous women alive I'm guessing. That chick was probably jealous and hoped plastic surgery would jack her up.
reply

I know Barbara Streisand was considered too ugly by her own mother to be famous an d English actor Michael Caine was thought to be ugly by his dad who told him he would only aspire to be a fisherman like him
reply

Every one of these women are beautifull, incredibly talented and strong and powerfull. Hollywood exects are idiots. And not that it would be good to have another one of this list, but were are the males?
reply

Minka is one of the most beautiful women I ve ever seen in the entire history of cinema and music. The same is about the elegant Gwyneth Paltrow. and Judy Garland, Winona Ryder and Kate Winslet? Seriously?
reply

Reese Witherspoon and Lea Michelle are actually two of my personal most beautiful human beings. Leas nose is legitimately something that makes her so beautiful. Reese is legitimately stunning
reply

If you aren't content with yourself and how you look then these people will mess you up and really badly to the point where you will feel so severely depressed that it becomes suicidal.
reply

P! nk is a beautiful woman! Like, totally gorgeous! She may not be the stereotypical pop star look, but she looks damn good all the time! Also, Jennifer Lawrence! Such a beautiful lady!
reply

Judi Dench was told when she was starting out (by a woman at a talent agency or theater or somewhere) that There is everything the matter with your face. She's done alright for herself.
