The chess part isn't as strange as it seems. Long ago while waiting for physical therapy for my leg the therapists asked me if i can play Halma. I can. They had one patient who's therapy was to grip small things with his repaired fingers, and they had a Halma board that was made with little plugs and sockets the plugs had to be stuck into and pulled out. The patient didn't know how to play Halma, and none of the therapists at site did.
So they asked me. I played a game with him and the therapists watching and learning, and while explaining and playing i of course lost the game.
If you learn someone how to play it, you need to show them every possible move they can make to be successfull.
Otherwise it would mean you are withholding information and not teaching the other one.
And that means you are actually playing against yourself and thus you most likely loose.

I actually think Penny's friendship with them and her version of intelligence is the whole point of the show.
Big Bang Theory is primarily evolution. They start off with the stereotypical nerds/geeks who learns to shed the socially awkwardness - with Sheldon's biggest character development - simply by befriending a very street smart, social, and beautiful woman, the stereotpical of woman all stereotypical nerds wanted. Penny rounds them out by showing the importance of emotional intelligence and street smarts and in turn, they introduce her into a world she never thought she'd be interested in. Everyone evolves in this show.

Penny got Leonard out of his shell, Leonard got Penny out of her misery of being a failure at her profession. They both look after Sheldon, Sheldon saved their relationship and marriage. Penny got Howard her wife leading to Bernadette being a part of their circle and getting Penny a job later. Penny cures Raj, Raj helps Howard and Bernie with their marriage and kids. Being friends with Penny helps Amy get closer to Sheldon and they win a Nobel.
All the characters complement each other and Penny was the start of the Bing Bang in their lives.

That shows how intelligence is not only about knowing complex theories and obscure facts. There are all kinds of intelligence and smarts.
However, beating someone experienced in chess on your first game is a hell more difficult than that. It usually happens because the person teaching allows it by paying more attention in teaching than learning, or by giving up the victory to teach the basics of how a checkmate works.
For the rest, yes, Penny is as smart as the other guys. Only a different kind of smart.

she is just as smart as the script author decided for marketing purposes. Any generalization is a mistake. And Sheldon is portrayed as a freak, just because this is what sells on TV. People love to see that those 'more successful' in some areas are freaks at least in some other dimensions. While people like Penny at least know pop songs lyrics and characters from TV shows - really smart!

I don't know how to translate this in English but she's the character that makes the topic rolls. No one would be interested in four nerds with no social life unless there's a counterpart who represents what they are not. She's not the main character but is the one character the theme couldn't go without.
In Spanish is named el quinto en discordia.

Did anyone ever ever ever wonder how these guys with all their brains only work at their job center but dont have lots of money. They buy toys and comics but dont have cars, clothes, jewelry, or babes to throw money at so where is the MONEY that there work or brains should produce. Even Howard living with his MOTHER should have been rolling in dough.

They should've. in last season. had episode where Penny was found to be genius too. Not a science genius. but something like the JAILBREAK character if Tatum Channing. with a genius for art or something. And Howard finally getting to be a doctor. Perhaps an honorary doctorate from his NASA work or something )

For me, one of Penny's best smart moments was when she was Sheldon's teammate during the scavenger hunt! She figured out the puzzle long before he did and in the geology lab, where the blue was leave no stone unturned she found the next four under a Rolling Stones posted hanging on the door

I love girl's night scenes. These actors earned their money. So didn't the Prop Master. In charge of producing every object used on the show including all the food. Sheldon's storage unit of shame? The Prop Master. The 3-D chess set was made. Not bought. Hail to the Prop Master.

I just noticed something, Penny didn't do the long division right.
851/23=37:
23x 3=69
85-69=16
carry down the 1, making 161
161/23=7
So, because you have to show your work correctly in long division, she got the answer wrong.

She is very intelligent! She has probably never had any chance of persisting in culture or sciences, but she has always understood and did everything very well! And she has physical strenght and braveness!

Penny was second mother to Sheldon. Sheldon would always require Penny to navigate his life and hope someday we can see reunion series with Penny still helping Sheldon.

PENNY (intimadatingly): You saying I'm not smart!
AMY & BERNADETTE (frightened): You're smart!
Interesting, considering who scared Penny became of Bernadette!

My favorite Sheldon/Penny moment in the entire series HAS to be when she brought home Leonard Nemoy's used napkin signed by him as a Christmas gift.

I think you missed the Penny/Sheldon relationship key- Missy. Sheldon already had a similar relationship with a similar type person, his twin sister.
