These performances were so good that they revived careers. For this list, well be looking at movie roles that relaunched their performers into the Hollywood stratosphere. Our countdown includes Mickey Rourke, Keanu Reeves, Brendan Fraser, and more! Did YOUR favorite comeback role make the list?

Jackie Earle Haley. After starring in the Bad News Bears & Breaking Away (two of the many great 70's films, he ends up doing pizza delivery then making tv ads. Gets a small role in All the King's Men then an oscar nominated role in Little Children, he was lauched into a revived career (note: he was the only good thing in that horrid PG-13 remake of RoboCop)

Jared Leto for Dallas Buyers Club is another example since that film won him an Oscar in his first film appearance in six years because he was on tour with his brother's band Thirty Seconds to Mars and Burt Reynolds when he did Boogie Nights and got an Oscar nomination for that film because his previous films were either box office bombs or disappointments.

One noticeable movie does not necessarily revive a career. Especially in the case of Fraser or Ke Huy we have to wait how it will play out. Mickey Rourke faded again, Renee Zellweger won for Judy and has not been since. For both I think thats a shame. RDJ and John Travolta(at least for the next 20 years after Pulp Fiction)pulled off the revival.

Why does she sound so condescending? I mean Mickey was a actor turned boxer, not the other way around. And why does she talk about the comebacks like the actors and actresses are pathetic and old. These are Hollywood legends, youd think MsMojo would have respect for them, not make everything sound like a cheap Access Hollywood report.

Robert Downey Jr. was not decisively cast as Iron Man. The part was first offered to Tom Cruise, who decided to pass.
People forget this now, but RDJs casting was considered a roll of the dice at the time due to his personal issues. Theres a strong argument that it was the most successful casting gamble in cinema history.

Brando's notorious rejection of Hollywood and the painfully poor Last Tango in Paris made him little more than a parody of himself to everyone but himself. Coppala did him the greatest favor of his life with The Godfather for which he will be remembered, despite the poorly conceived puffy cheek make-up. KDM

Jane Fonda in Monster-In-Law. She took a 15-year retirement but after that movie, she revived her career in projects such as Here's Where I Leave You, Grace and Frankie, Book Club, Youth, The Newsroom, 80 For Brady and Moving One. Probably, Jessica Lange too, with her appereances in American Horror Story.

I swear every time I see that clip from The Whale Im about to ball my eyes out Also Robert Downey jr will always be Iron Man, that role felt so natural for him! GOTG is my favorite Marvel trilogy, Keanu is great, and Drew Barrymore is truly the scream Queen!

I read that Marlon Brando's role as Don Vito was so convincing that real-life gang leaders and mafia dons started changing their mannerisms to match the character. Before The Godfather it was not unheard of for leaders to be violent-minded trash talkers.
reply

Keanu is the only one who deserves to be on this list. Some of these performances were memorable to their fans but most of the movies after the fact were flops. None were more profitable than John Wick and Keanu still has his star potential

At least an honorable mention should go to Eddie Murphy for Dolemite is my Name. He was great as his portrayal Rudy Ray Moore and one of his best movies in a long time. He was even able to bring Wesley Snipes back for it.
reply

It's hard to believe that Marlon Brando was ever considered washed up especially just prior to his most iconic role. He was absolutely perfect for Vito and I can't imagine the movie doing nearly as well without him.

It's a thing for Tarantino to cast actors whose careers are on decline and give them second chances.
'Once Upon A Time In Hollywood' is a bit about it. Although the casting in that particular film doesn't allude to it.

Keanu Reeves didn't have a comeback because he never stopped being a bankable star. There's small a gap between his massive franchises but he starred in like 15 movies between the Matrix and John Wick.
reply

Mickey Rourke did not start as a boxer but as an actor. Really popular and successful in the 80s and early 90s. He came back to the movie scene after trying to be a boxer. Come on guys! ;)
reply

2022 was certainly the year of the Comeback. Michelle Yeoh, Brendan Fraser, and Ke Huy Quan all received Oscars following years struggling to find work, and they were very much well deserved!
reply

2008 was RDJs year
One performance lands him an Oscar nomination (Tropic Thunder)
The other gives him an iconic role and kickstarts one of the biggest movie franchises (Iron Man)

Couldn't make it through. This narrator has a very, very irritating way of talking. Sound computer generated. Very fake-cheerful, as if she's forcing a smile and talking through it.
reply

Michael Keaton, who was famous for his role in the Tim Burton Batman films.
Uhhh so we're not going to mention Beetlejuice? Because that's a pretty iconic Halloween character

reply

When I watch, John Wick films. I say. Keanu Reeves. I wasnt a big fan of you before but after watching these films, I am not a big fan. I love Keanu Reeves as John Wick.
reply

John Travolta came back with Pulp fiction. Then he went away again with movies like Michael, Battlefield Earth, Gotti, Face Off, Broken Arrow and oh so many more.
reply

Instantaneously, RDJ's roles in Tropic Thunder and Iron Man in 2008 come to mind. He owned that summer and it completely revived him in the process.
reply

Kudos to Brando for delivering lines with a cat in full blown me, love ME! Mode in his lap. You can literally hear the little guy purring.
reply

John Trevolta credits the look whos taking franchise for reviving his carer not pulp fiction many would disagree but thats what he thinks
reply

KHQ is one of, in my opinion, a penultimate comeback story.
I mean, the last movie I remembered of him was as Data in the goonies.

reply

Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man was one of the best cast of history, seriously, no one can't see Iron man's character without think in RDJ
reply

John Travolta was already a big name in the 70's, and Quentin Tarantino ensured that he was recognisable to 90's audiences as well!
reply

Out of all of these come backs Brendons is the most deserved and im so happy hes back love ke huy quan to hell always be data
reply

So glad to see Katharine Hepburn's performance in The Philadelphia Story on this list! She was fantastic in it, as she always was.
reply

Mickey Rourke isnt a boxer turned actor, he was a critically acclaimed actor who took up boxing, then went back into acting.
