It is common nowadays for groups to lip synch, or not even try, and that's because the paradigm has changed. In the 1980's, rock groups performed in packed arenas (10k to 20k people) and everything was live. In the 1990's, the recording industry locked out MOST (to the Haters I said MOST, NOT ALL) of the 80's rockers. Groups started performing in much smaller venues (I have seen Heart and Band Maid play in shopping malls-it's embarrassing. Also, people want choreography in the shows, so, it's no longer permissible for an awesome guitarist to spend an entire concert leaning against a stack of amps. Autotune and other tricks help singers that actually do sing live. Of course, there's rock stars that are getting old and will need to perform from wheelchairs.

My favorite lip sync performance (not that they were caught per se) is when Iron Maiden was invited to play Wasted Years on live German TV in 1987. They were basically forced to perform to the studio recording by the tv station, so instead of trying to hide or conceal that none of them were performing live, they ran around the stage swapping instruments and passing the mic around for them all to lip sync through the entire song. The whole performance was glorious and hysterical.

The track that played before Ellie Goulding sang was a mixture of Burn and Love Me Like You Do. That was clearly a playback/mixing error, unless she'd planned to sing both at the same time. When she eventually sang, the music was so loud it was hard to hear her vocals, but the music became quieter gradually through the performance and you could hear that she was singing live. So no, she wasn't caught lip syncing.

Milli Vanilli hands down! Granted everyone could agree they should have not won the Grammy, but even after that, they could sing for real. Fab is doing well for himself, it sucks the same couldn't be said for Rob. I can't wait for the movie and the documentary was amazing.

Every singer lip synchs in this day and age. All those K-Pop groups. They do not sing live at their shows. Anything outside in the cold, the Superbowl if there are several artists, award shows, hell Whitney's National Anthem was a recorded track. No one should be surprised.

Mariah has lost her edge and throne! She gives half-assed effort in her concerts and is resting on her name and past dame and is getting to a point where her name will be met with an eye roll!

In Mariah's defense not everyone is going to sing live outdoors in New York on December 31st. It's perfectly okay to lip sync under those conditions. Having said that she slayed it the year after.

Any longtime fan knows of either one ( like myself) is completely ok with knowing that both Beyonce and Mariah lip sync during their concerts and live television show performances

I immediately thought of Ashlee Simpson. At least she tried to do a hoedown to alleviate the awkwardness, before slinking away in embarrassment.
