How about when 'comic relief' actually screws up a movie John Ford was pretty bad with this, directing not remotely credible characters - Ken Curtis in THE SEARCHERS, Andy Devine in THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE, Curtis, Devine and Harry Carey Jr in TWO RODE TOGETHER. Sasha Baron Cohen tends to kick precariously balanced characters over the edge, as in HUGO and LES MISERABLES.
