I think there are actually several lists here. Perhaps Ms. Mojo could expand upon this.
#1) First there would be the Best Deaths of TV characters. I never weep when TV criminals or villians get killed off, no matter how unexpectedly. Yeah! Good riddance. They deserve it. I want them off the show. But I am just a villian-hater, and I don't like shows or movies that glorify crime.
#2) Second would be the list of sad but Expected Deaths of beloved characters. These are usually from disease, old age, or lingering accidents. While these deaths are sad, at least the audience has had time to adjust to the loss.
#3) And finally are the truly Unexpected Deaths of beloved characters. While these are often done because the actor wants to leave the show, the audience doesn't know this and so the deaths fall into this category. Henry Blake (MASH, Delores Vallandingham (West Wing, and Matthew Crawley (Downton Abbey) fall into this category. The audience is shocked, gets angry at the show's writers, and we never get over it. The shock and grief linger.
Every great TV show has at least one tragic unexpected death.

Fun fact: the creator of the book Codename Villanelle, Luke Jennings, like the fans, completely hated what they did with the character Villanelle at the end of the series, he said that in the books the ending is different and much better (I won't give spoilers because I do too I haven't read it and I will read it one day, the actress Jodie Comer, who plays Villanelle, didn't like it very much either, she said that for her Villanelle swam out of the river and lives.

With ER, I will always cry to this very day when his coworkers read the fax from Corday about his passing. Just really hits deep same with Lucy's. Dr. Greene's passing was the last good send off, the subsequent ones: helicopter (Romano, the entire helicopter saga is an issue of its own, explosions (Gallant in the army, Pratt in an ambulance bomb) felt so tacky.

Really Dana Fairbanks’ death on The L Word isn’t on this list Her death was absolutely shocking & ruined the series for many fans of the show. Even Ilene Chaiken, co-creator, writer and executive producer on the television series, later regretted her decision to have Dana die on the show. It ended the show for so many people & just wasn’t the same show any longer.

I still haven't gotten over Villanelle's death, I watched the series and fell in love with her (as all the fans did, unfortunately as the series progressed it got worse, I believe that the change of writers per season directly influenced, Killing Eve for me it was a waste of potential, it could have been much better than it was, seasons 1 and 2 prove that

I can't believe that Once Upon A Time didn't make the list.
Robin Hood's (Season 5) death was one of the most devastating events to occur in Once Upon a Time's six year history. It was entirely unexpected. The murder of Regina's true love at Hades' hand was a shocking and heartbreaking moment in the rather lackluster Underworld arc.

I would add this one -- On Thirtysomething, when everyone breathes a huge sigh of relief to find out Nancy's cancer is gone -- then the phone rings, and Michael finds out that Gary has died. Absolutely jaw dropping and devastating plot twist, and the biggest emotional rollercoaster ride of an episode I think I have ever seen.

I can't believe they didn't put any of the MANY shocking deaths of Supernatural. I was expecting Bobby Singer being on the list, or even Charlie Bradbury (she totally didn't deserve to die the way she did. Maybe even Sam's death at the end of season 2. Even if he was brought back, his death came as a shock to us all.

Villanelle didn't deserve that ending, her character was awesome, Killing Eve gets worse as the series goes on, season 1 and season 2 were awesome, season 3 was kind of okay, not as good as the previous but okay, season 4 was just a mess and awful, but Jodie Comer indeed is amazing playing this character anyway

If you guys ever do shocking TV, cartoon characters death, you need to put gambit up there from X-Men 97 I didn’t see it coming and I was outraged. I really hope they bring them back for future seasons. He was a beloved character. I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who was pissed off about his

Tara's death in Buffy made me realize how jerk Joss wheedon really is. Others death are worth to mentions are
Hailey, Hotch's wife, in Crimnal Minds
Robin Hood and Neal Cassidy/Baelfire in OUAT
Prue Halliwell in Charmed
Bobby, Charlie and Crowley in Supernatural
Laurel Lance in Arrow

Breaking Bad is my favorite TV drama just dying was not the most shocking death. They built up to it the whole season there were many more shocking decks and breaking bad Andrea Hanks Schrader anyone of those should’ve made this list not Gus. Mike dying also could’ve made this list.

Jayce's death is not as unexpected as Tara's is. It quite literally came out of Nowhere. Joyce had cancer, got it removed but she died anyways, while sad, these things still do happen. Warren's wild random shot into the air and hitting Tara exactly in the heart That's shocking.

One Tree Hill, Skins(UK, Degrassi: The Next Generation, The 100, The O. C, Charmed, Glee, Yellowjackets, Veronica Mars (Petition to erase season 4 completely. Ok, naming characters would take forever and I am not even done naming TV shows and some of them have several, so.

Of course there was the shocking and heartbreaking death of Ben on Scrubs. They really played around with your mind on that one, perhaps dropping a hint or two along the way, but it still hit like a ton of bricks. (This did show up on another, similar topic yesterday)

Teri’s death in 24 was impactful but what made it so much more heartbreaking was the fact that editors used black-and-white clips from the first episode as flashbacks. Jack Bauer promised to put his family back together and in the end that’s taken away from him.

Here's one's that shocked me:
Prue Halliwell on Charmed, yes the charmed ones died. A LOT, but at the end of season 3 Shax killed Prue and Piper, but he only had time to save Piper.
Robin Hood: Once upon a time
Laurel Lance: Arrow

If I had to pick I'd say Miss wolowitz(Carol anne susie) she was beautiful woman. Her character may not have been seen, Howard may yelled at her but she loved her son, his friends like a mother does. Raise a cup of milk to Miss W.
reply

My friend you forgot so many
1) the dad in 8simples rules
2)Keith in One Tree Hill
3)Prue Haliwell in charmed (the original one )
4) I know there’s so many other but for the moment I just don’t remember xD

Thank you for the update, MsMojo! 29: 12 I agree. That scene was absolutely brutal. I thought that actor with a baseball bat was the same dude as the one who appeared in No Country for Old Men (2007.
