Movie costumes are not merely the clothes on the characters backs, they tell a story! In this countdown we take a look at the movie costumes that stood out almost as much of the movie themselves. These costumes have been recognized in some form or another, whether that be through Academy Awards or have influenced films of the same genre. Star Wars, West Side Story, Cleopatra, The Lord of the Rings, The Wizard of Oz, Titanic or Memoirs of a Geisha, these movies sure made an impression for their standout pieces

Wow is this ever off. If you're considering historical accuracy as part of your criteria--then the whole thing's a wash. And yes, I've studied historical costume for thirty years.
Gatsby's costuming pales in comparison to the original, Robert Redford version. The outfits are cheaply made, historically inaccurate, and unflattering to the actors. Just about as awful as the movie itself. I will forgive Titanic and Cleopatra, because they do much better by recreating the silhouettes that were fashionable in their times and because of the sheer lavishness of the results I'll agree on The Lord of the Rings and Star Wars since they creates worlds of their own and have no historical precedent. However, West Side Story offers nothing in terms of originality, cut, design, or anything original. The outfits look like they came out of the local discount houses because the socio-economic circumstances of the characters indicate they probably did. Accuracy here is fine, but certainly does't merit the term epic or even interesting.
Terrible choice--but not nearly as insulting a Memoirs of a Geisha, with is an insult from start to finish. not just in costuming, but in story, dance, and every single aspect of Japan's ancient culture. If you have ever seen the magnificence of a real geisha or geiko as is the proper term in Kyoto where the story takes place, you would understand that these awful hairstyles, dreadful makeup, and cheap polyester kimono deserve condemnation, not celebration. If you doubt me, research them on the web.
Moulin Rouge is pretty spectacular in costuming, but Phantom of the Opera is much better. The Wizard of Oz scores for everyone but its central character, and while the movie is an utter delight, only the Munchkins really rock the costuming clock. I think your honorable mentions are much better than most of your selections.
Other suggestions for much better candidates: Deborah Kerr in The King and I, in arguably the most beautiful gown ever created.
Grace Kelley in Rear Window or High Society in glorious, glamorous gowns. If not Kelley, then Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes for equal magnificent in an entirely different vein. How about Barbra Streisand's fabulous outfits in Funny Girl and Hello Dolly? She and the whole rest of the cast are period correct, fun, and funny, but delightful to the modern eye.

Some of my favorite movies and costumes, but I didn't like Moulin Rouge and thought the direction was too over the top like the movie musical Annie as well! You forgot a very important epic film, Dr. Zhivago with the late great Omar Sharif and beautiful Julie Christie! That film was so influential on the fashion industry in the 1960s and 70s despite the mini skirt! It heralded in the midi skirt look and long sweeping coats and laced up boots for women! I remember living and working in NYC as a fashion artist dressed like Lara and feeling like her as well minus the fur muff. Geraldine Chaplin's beautiful costumes were also note worthy, the beautiful pale pink suit and muff she wore arriving in Moscow from fashionable as always Paris! The Bolshevik Revolution took place during the late Edwardian period but costumes were beginning to change and be revolutionized by the late great Coco Chanel in the 1920s when she introduced the material jersey and made those gigantic Edwardian hats smaller like straw boaters which I've always loved. The Edwardian era is one of my favorite ones along with the 1920s and 30s! The costumes for Cleopatra were fabulous, but I always detected a slight Southern drawl in Taylor's voice and I thought when she stepped down off the float and winked, that ruined the whole seriousness of that epic film, bad direction! imho Thanks for sharing. great job!

It's a good list - but far from perfect. Real die-hard connoisseurs of Hollywood costumes would be aghast that the very greatest costumers - Edith Head and Adrian - are overlooked! What should have been included in this list? How about Hello Dolly with Barbra Streisand (who wore the most expensive and complicated gown in Hollywood history? My Fair Lady. the costuming was brilliant and unforgettable! Other musicals that had wonderful costumes include The Music Man (early 1900s middle America) and The King & I (1860s Siam. Other films like All About Eve, The Philadelphia Story, and Cabaret deserve mention too.

Mad Max Fury Road and Fifth Element should have been more then honorable mentions. They should have totally placed! I'll give you Moulin Rouge, Cleopatra, Lord of the Rings, Wizard of Oz, Great Gabtsy and Star Wars. I'm surprised you didn't mention Disney's live action Cinderella. The costumes in that were pretty impressive! Labyrinth is another movie people remember the costumes very fondly for, among other things. Crimson Peak also had amazing costumes as well! Marie Antoinette was another film that had amazing costumes!

The fact that The Fifth Element was an honorable mention is a travesty! Jean Paul Gaultier audacious and varied costume designs were fantastic and are still a cultural defining moment! Also, Chicago, Shakespeare In Love, Ever After, Gone with the Wind, My Fairy Lady, Funny Face, Gigi, Hunger Games series enhance their world's visual storytelling, grandeur and historical reference. I understand there is limited amount of time for each video, but there are so many worthy films to choose from.

Doesn't matter how pretty or shiny were the costumes in Cleopatra they were absolutely not historically accurate, the Oscar should have gone to Il Gattopardo, which is considered to have one of the most accurate period costumes, even for the time it was made. I also don't care if they were thousands of costumes in Cleopatra, cuantity is not the same as quality

What about My Fair Lady? Some wonderful costumes in that movie! And the dress worn by Ingrid Bergman in Casablanca when shes looking at the tablecloths with Rick. Its a white jumper over a black and white horizontallyqq striped blouse. fantastic timeless dress and it would look good today on the right person.

Miss Mojo, if you are intending to make more lists about films then try watching more of those that were made before 1980. Try watching mors from the classic era from around 1935 to 1960 ish, the costumes and sets were more noteworthy. Also look at foreign language ones too.
reply

Gone with the wind should have been on the list and not just a mention. Selznick insisted the costumes be as true to the real thing as they could, even the petticoats under the dresses which really wouldn't be seen! There are also at least 3 iconic dresses Scarlet wore!
reply

I think you should release a separate top 10 for Most Iconic Movie Costumes, and make sure it includes Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's, Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and Seven Years Itch, and Gene Kelly in Singing in the Rain.
reply

I will literally always despise the costuming of Amadeus, nothing will ever change my mind, it will always be the most absolute worst costuming on any period piece Ive seen, its so distracting to me that I can barely watch it anymore
reply

For a remake of this, I would like to nominate Ellen Ripley's cargo power loader from Aliens. While not a traditional gown, the power loader is iconic like few other outfits, and far more functional, letting the wearer kick butt!
reply

The rare list where I agree with basically every movie on this list. West Side Story's costumes are so underrated. I know they won an oscar but for a movie that isnt an 18th century period piece, those costumes really stand out.
reply

My Fair Lady and Sabrina? I dont find West Side Story is so amazing compared to other films. or so high up in the rankings. what about Gangsters of New York, not even a honorable mention for Harry Potter world?
reply

This list is a JOKE. Any movie made before 1969 looks better than most of these choices. Marie Antoinette 1938, GWTW 1939, Back Street 1961, Imitation of Life 1959, need I say more?
reply

Gone With the Wind should have been on the list because his influential it was to the historical costuming genre and his accurate most of the outfits were and his huge the film was.
reply

No evita by madonna? Madonna broke the Guineiss world record held previously by elizabeth taylor by most costume change in a movie. Im not gonna watch this. Mojo is so biased.
reply

I believe Dr. Zhivago and Anna Karenina (2017) costumes are intricate, lavish and another character in these movies. They sh/be in the next series on costumes
reply

Can't take this serious. No mention of Visconti's Gattopardo and Kubrick's Barry Lyndon and many more far superior costume pieces. Very uninformed presentation.
reply

Cant agree to memoires of a geisha. They made so so many heavy mistakes in dressing the geishas. Overall no suprise that the movie was not a success in japan.
reply

Vivien Leighs Scarlett in the red party dress and the green drapery dress should be number one. They didnt even show Scarlett in the Honorable mention.
reply

I think that Star Wars should have been in at the very least the top 4. Well, Marie Antoinette, too. I love that period, in time.
reply

I see Moulin Rouge, Star Wars, The Great Gatsby, Gone with the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, Titanic, and West Side Story! I click!

I wish they would re-release Star wars A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi, to the theaters.

Glinda: just close your eyes, tap your heels 3 times.
Me: and say, there's no oscar like costume design.

reply

As far as 18th century costuming, Amadeus was TERRRIBLE. Marie Antoinette? Barry Lyndon? The Duchess!
