I'm a VR fan. Have been hyped for VR since my childhood in the 90's. Finally, I have a PC VR headset and use it almost every day, mostly to race in the racing simulator Assetto Corsa, it's freaking great! Cannot see myself downgrading to a monitor after being IN the race car!
That being said, I don't think it will be a huge mainstream success. Really hate to say it, at least not any time soon. Because I've demoed it for a few dozen people now, and of those people about 30 or so percent got sick. And when something LITERALLY makes you sick, it tends to drive folks away. Even I felt a bit of dizzyness upon first getting into it! Though, I persevered and grew my VR legs, and am now able to spend hours in VR with no problem. Most folks won't be so patient. Especially when you need to pay so much for the privilege.

The pricing is a little BS though. Yes, it's $399 for the headset but how many of the people that will buy this have the camera and 2 move controllers? I'm going to bet that very few people do so you're really looking at $499 more realistically.
Btw, if anyone wants to see what the experience of PSVR is like, check out Giant Bomb. They did a live stream yesterday for over 6 hours where Jeff had to pause and take breaks a number of times because the headset kept losing tracking and making him feel sick. I'd like to point out that Jeff has a pretty iron stomach for VR and mentioned he's never had that experience with either the Vive or Oculus.

Can we see some more of the raw footage of Polygon just playing it (the little bit we saw at the end and inter spaced during the review? I think that kind of raw reaction to how the system itself works (more as a representation of what the average person might experience in their living room; like losing the controller off screen, someone walking in front of the camera, etc) might be more telling than a quick 4 minute review or a written out one. Maybe just a big block of video with like time stamps of who is using the device and what game they are playing in the description (would also help me put faces to voices and names of staff.

PSVR has been an absolutely incredible experience so far. I initially thought that Rush of Blood was going to be a cheesy, cliche rail shooter, but it has turned out to be one of the most unique gaming sessions I have ever had. This type of technology is astounding, and I really have no complaints at the end of day.
I can't wait to show off this -magic- to more people. :)

-Paid review- that's what most commenters are saying until they watch several other review and hear them saying more or less the same thing then they'll realize it's not a paid review.

I tried one yesterday at Frys electronics, and it was my first time with any vr experience. and I was left underwhelmed. The display was just TOOOOOO low quality.

VR seems cool and all but it's way too early still. It's like the SEGA CD, like it's a cool idea that'll probably soon take over, but it's way too early to bother yet.

I wonder: is there a technical reason why are VR headsets are so expensive (compared to monitors for example, or is it just an early-adopter thing?
reply

the lack of room scale wasn't even mentioned as a failing point? It's odd because the best games on the Vive are the ones utilising it seamlessly

Polygon: -Gives positive review-
Comments: 'HOW MUCH DID SONY PAY YOU FOR THIS!
What if this is just. you know. a good product?

I love Polygon and all. but THATS the review? For what is effectively the second coming of gaming (in console form) this is very light touch
reply

It. Is. Not. A. -Processor Unit-. It's is not processing anything. It's simply breaks the signal into two and sends one to your TV.
reply

Saying its -one of the best- when there's only 2 other VR headsets on the market is pretty ridiculous and doesn't tell us much
reply

There is a reason of why they're cheaper in the 1st place: you'll get 1920 x 1080 pixels resolution, compared to 2160 x 1200.
reply

Technically you need to include a ps4 and a camera to run this, so it's going to be somewhere between $700-$800 total.
