I just adopted a 8 mo old GSD that had the same issues and would bite the cage and the Shelter had tagged her as unadoptable because of this. She was kennel stressed and was to be put down Feb 21, I had to go through 6 rescues before I found one that would tag her because they were all full and the shelter would only release to a rescue and not the public. I finally was able to get her out on the day she was to be put down. She has been a handful as she has had no training and wasn’t house broken but with a lot of patience, time and love she is a very loving, smart puppy and is 90% there and continues to get better everyday. These dogs just need a chance to live out their lives in a loving home. Spotty is not my first rescue dog as I have 3 others that had special issues and they are all the best now and we are all a happy pack but I’m filled up and don’t have any more room for anymore and it breaks my heart that there are so many great dogs in shelters that just need a chance and a loving home. That you for saving him.

Ahhh. so it was a coping mechanism and a trauma response, leading to a bit of a PTSD replay of the same reaction when he was out of that situation. Nothing needed but lots of love, safe spaces, and destressing the nervous system whilest forming new habits to retrain his emotional and reactive baseline. What a great example of the emotional complexity of animals, and how IMPORTANT and necessary a foster home might be, when a forever home is not immediately available. I'm so happy Romeo found his furever home right away, though - he's clearly such a sweet boy!

When I adopted my German Shepherd from the shelter, she had been fearful and trying to hide herself in a far corner of her cage. I was persistent in visiting her and treating her daily for a week. She finally started coming to me and was so loving. I adopted her and she was the best friend to myself and my sons until bone cancer took her life. She fiercely protected us from all threats and I miss her several decades since she died. We gave her a loving, compassionate home and she rewarded us with her love and protection. RIP Pepper

Thank you dor saving Romeo. You have forever changed his life. He will repay you in unconditional love and loyalty. I adopted my cheweenie from a family who kept him in a kennel all day, and gave him zero love and attention. When he moved in with us, his true personality developed. He is a sweetheart and a protector. I had never seen him so happy. I watched him from a far for a year. Until my relentlessness in wanting him finally won, and they gave him to me

I am so glad that there are people in this world like you. When I adopt a dog and I see that there are quite a few behavioral issues to work out. Like you, I give him time to feel comfortable then we work out the problems you don’t give up. It’s like a child you adopt a child you don’t give them up you have a child with learning disabilities. You don’t give them up, I’m so happy Romeo is living his best life and you saved his life

I have seen traumatized dogs they usually just sit sill facing a wall in the worst cases they scream and Shrek when you try to approach while shaking uncontrollably.
no dog or animal in general should be in a cage like that but the fact that he got on his side and let her pet his belly showed that he still trust people.
if he wasn't in a prison cell looking cage everyone would just think he was a silly boy chasing his tail.

Shepherds are highly intelligent and working dogs and need a job to be productive and be mentally stimulated.
Anyone who thinks of owning one must know how to keep them busy and going for long periods of time. This is why they are often K9 officers - lots of training and stimulation to keep from being bored and doing what this poor dog did. SO glad he was rescued by a family who understood his needs.

german shepherds are working dogs. they require a lot of physical activity and a focus on specific tasks which you can train them to do and they will love you for it. if you don't keep them mentally stimulated they will develop negative or destructive behaviors. german shepherds are the most intelligent and show empathy towards their owners. they are the best dogs in my opinion.

The inhumane mistreatment Romeo got at that kill shelter was actually criminal and they should have been fined! At the very least someone at that shelter should have been forced to stay in his cramped cage for a week! The trauma Romeo experienced is so sad but glad that he was rescued and had a wonderful foster mom and found his forever home with that wonderful woman and her dog.

You can also distract him or animals like him by training with treats cause shepherds need to keep busy & work to stay focussed.
Another thing that distracts dogs are carrots, peanutbutter kong toy or mat etc.
Some also enjoy low volume classical music while they are busy working through these activities.
Thanks to this family for their patience, persistence & TLC.

GSD need a job or constant stimulation to wear them out both physically and mentally. They aren't lap dogs or lazy dogs, they are working dogs. I have a Dutch GSD and he is constantly playing non stop until he wears himself out. Putting him through obedience classes was a must as well. Made his brain work out. So glad he was adopted and it all worked out for him.

Is it sad to think about how many animals out there show annoying habits while they're in the shelter that stop people from adopting them, while knowing that most of them can become lovely pets once they truly feel loved and safe and cared for in the way they need. Many animals are put down just because no one showed up willing to put that effort in for them.

I’ve seen this first hand with a GSD owned by retired couple. The dog was play oriented and high energy so to entertain themselves they would chase their tale when bored. They would do that for hours unless you would distract them with different activities. If you just tell them to stop they would think it’s a game and carry on.

You give humanity hope. Sometimes when I see these cruelties I feel like if we are to be attacked by something I would say yep we are terrible beings but people like you give humanity hope. I rescue as well and I condemn anyone who pays 3-6, 000 for a pure bred dog. These dogs deserve a happy life.

Grateful that someone took a chance on him. What a great dog!
It’s too bad that so many people are breeding such poor examples of the breed and owners are dumping animals of all kinds.
Priorities used to be clearer when phones were just phones and companionship was with other living beings.

Romeo is such a sweet dog thank you for saving him.
It is so hard for these animals when they're in a cage and they don't really have a lot of room and they want to be free because who wants to be locked up in a kennel He is going to have a good life and lots of adventures

Time, love, good food, routine and walks. daily walks are a huge part of a dogs life morning and evening not for fitness but for stimulation of nose, eyes, ears etc, and for all the sociol stuff what my neighbour calls reading the peemails’!
Poor boy great rescue.

Not for nothing but, has he been seen by a vet My dog has allergies and he will spin like that because, (not to be disgusting) his butt hole itches. Once we figured out the trigger he’s good to go. Just thought it might be worth throwing this out there.

Tk u for rescued him. My dog loves when my husband play with him like running with his toys at the yard and he try to chase my husband because he grabbed his toys. He gets do happy with little attention and games with balls also. Tk u again for trying.

Poor dog I hate people who dump their animals. I noticed they don’t dump their kids though What makes people think it’s ok to treat animals that way but kids they would never think of that it’s not ok animals deserve the same love and commitment
