The ONLY time I've ever left a pet in the car while I was running into a store was less than 5 minutes, in the shade, windows cracked and temp outside was about 65 degrees. That was the only time a pet has been in my car without me. If it was any hotter or not in the shade I would never have left them in the car under any circumstance, not even if I knew it was under 5 minutes. Cars heat up way too fast in the sun.
I see people doing this to their dogs all the time at Walmart and honestly they need to have a policy that the security guards report these people for animal cruelty! I went in one time and passed by 2 vehicles with dogs inside. I was inside the store for about 45 minutes, and when I came out both vehicles were still there with the dogs trapped inside. Thankfully it was a cool day but that's just cruel! If you are going to do a lot of shopping don't take your pets with you and leave them in the car!

My house can get up to 90 degrees in the summer, even with the blackout curtains drawn shut from early morning. The late afternoon sun, during the hottest part of the day, comes in the front area & heat blasts the whole house.
We are having a heat wave and I have 3 fans in the bedroom and 2 turbo stand fans & 1 16 table fan on in the living room.
Even if I end up in blankets, my dog gets a cold shower until she’s completely cooled off, every night and I let her sleep wet. It does wanders for her. My cats don’t like water, so they lay on the wood/tile floors in the darkened hallway or front room.
This alone has given me perspective. I won’t take my dog anywhere unless it’s cool enough outside and I’m going to be with her.

I helped rescue a Pitbull that was inside of an suv with only one window down in the middle of summer at the Denver Botanic Gardens Parking lot WITH NO SHADE while working as a security guard. The Denver Police came and broke the window to save the dog. Moments later, the bad owners waltzed out of the gardens and even argued with the police about their broken window, never mind the dog! They were from Texas and said thats how they do it in Texas. Colorado has a law that protects those who save an animal from a hot car.

This is so important and it's a shame that it must be demonstrated for folks to get it.
What he didn't mention is that even on mild days, an enclosed car can be deadly.
In a Stanford University study, when it was 72 degrees outside, a car’s internal temperature climbed to 116 degrees within one hour.
A dog’s normal temperature is between 101 and 102. 5F.
When it reaches 105. 8F, permanent brain damage begins.
Multiple organ failure and death occurs between 107 to 109 F.

Do people not realize dogs have no sweat glands like we do, and even if they did, their fur coats would likely further limit their ability to cool themselves. Their natural panting mechanisms can only do so much. Same applies to young children who have limited abilities to regulate their not yet mature bodies. Don't do it unless you're prepared to face animal cruelty and felony negligence charges. 1st degree murder applies if the human victim is younger than 12 or older than sixty years old.

That is why when she comes for a ride (my female husky, we trained on discipline with windows fully rolled down and she has access to ice water and her cooling pad layed across the seat. At most we both can deal with hot temperatures given the best conditions but we never risk anything in this instance for more than 5 mins. If it requires more time than what a gas station or small food shop with windows can offer, then I go later by myself.

The only time I left my dog in the car was in the fall and early winter when I was living in the Sierra Nevada region near Lake Tahoe. When temps were in the 40’s and 50’s. And for very short periods like 15 minutes. I kept a bed for her and always a bowl of water in the back of my Jeep. If I had grocery shopping or anything that would take lengthy periods of time she would just stay home.

A couple of weeks ago, I had to take my foster cat to the vet. We needed to stop at Walmart to grab some supplies and my mother-in-law suggested that I leave him in the car. He was in a backpack style carrier.
I took him in Walmart with me. I refused to leave him in the car. He kept quiet, thankfully. But I wasn't going to chance it.

If someone needs to be told not to do this. they never cared or will. Pure psychopaths. I had to call animal protective services on a man leaving his dog out all day in 15 degree weather in NEwyork. The cops came and I never saw that dog out in the weather again but I thought someone had to tell you to have compassion. I still fear for that dog

They don’t even turn the car on for the A/C We travel with our dog all the time; however, we leave them a big bowl of water, treat with chew stick plus their bed my dog lays in the back seat, we shade the windows and put a anti-theft device on the wheel, just when we stop to eat or whatever these people are unreal.

This is so valuable.
The useful thing here is to see how FAST it rises.
And that open windows have no effect.
Owners aren't evil, they just need educating.
And his statement is vital - Dogs can't sweat. That's why they pant. So they aren't as heat tolerant as a human, and humans aren't that resilient either.

It looked like he was possibly parked in a shady spot. If it gets that hot in the shade, imagine how much hotter it might get if parked with the sun blasting in through the windshield or side windows. Poor animals and children, and anyone else that us unable to open doors themselves and depends on others for their care.

Even before watching this video I knew to never leave my pet in a car when it's so hot. This shouldn't be something you need to learn. Its common sense. It's dangerous. Appreciate the Vet doing a trial to show what would happen. Hope others learn and never make a poor mistake like that for their pets.

When I was about 12 I sat in a car while my parents went into a store to go to the bathroom. It was my choice I didn't want to go inside. It got so hot so quickly, but as a human I had the ability to just open the car door. Dogs dont have that and they dont have the knowledge of when you'll be back.

I have 2 moon roofs in my van. I still won't leave my dogs in hot weather or very cold weather. Even if I'm okay, if my dog is panting, the air is on. My oldest is 12 and a double coated basically miniature lab mix and I am not going to watch her pant and pant and pant and pant.

I still have a picture of a sign at a home depot store that says: Your dog is welcome in the store, we have a bowl of water standing. We check the parking lot regularly and take action if needed.
I still think that was a great sign and I wish more people would do that.

When I leave my dog waiting in the car, I leave the engine running, turn on the air conditioner and lock the car with the spare key.
Only for a little while, of course.
I can't believe I'd leave my dog waiting with the engine turned off in the heat.

You could have opened the door, but thanks for helping, do the test on dogs feet because these nut cases here in Arizona at 110-115 temps are out walking there dogs, you can see the dogs trying to run for shade or grass they need FINED big time.

There is an episode on Bondi vet about a dog that suffered heat stroke, they did everything to save him but he still died. At extreme heats their cells start to break down causing irreparable damage. Poor dog was coughing up so much blood as he died.

The Dodo is making money off animals who were abused and starved. Employee rating is 23% below average for employers within the Media & Communication industry. Let's film everyone who works there being abused and post it for monetary gain.
