Hairdresser reacts to at home perm fails! Senpai: At 18, a top range hairdressers in my city bullied me into a perm on my birthday, when I went in for a cut and colour. My mistake was asking for a cut with volume. The stylist would not stop raging on about a perm being perfect for my thin hair. He even coloured it then said he'd not cut it and I could walk out right now if I didnt agree to a perm.
Well. at 18 wanting to rock a new look as a legal adult, I relented.
Worst idea ever. I looked like a granny for months. I was so pretty, but people made such nasty comments about my awful hair. No one wanted to fix it. No other stylist believed who it was that did this to me! I was humiliated. Why was this guy so popular at the salon and in my neighbourhood when he butchered my hair?

I used to do a very minimal spot perm, using maybe 5 large rods,
Just on the crown of my head, processing it just mins, in oder to gain some level of body in the crown area as it went so flat you could hardly do anything with it.
The difficulty was making sure to not get the 1st solution on the rest of the hair. There use to be a foam perm which helped to contain where the perm solution was deposited,
it wasnt a huge problem if the 2nd solution, whats known as the neutralizer, got onto the existing hair but you must pay full attention to the 1st perm lotion that had to be contained to just that area and contained well. Even sponging the solution it onto the rollers, if needed. AndIt worked well!

I've permed my mums hair many times with no issue. that said I basically grew up at the salon watching her hair get done and she always rocked the 80's style perm so the only tricky part were the longer layers at the back where it gets a little crowded with all the rods. My first perm fell out immediately and then they cut a squillion layers in it and permed it. Looks god-awful so my Aunt permed it straight again for me (she was actually a hairdresser though so trust)

Soooooooooo I just had a perm done professionally and I wasn't satisfied with it. I decided I was going to do a perm on my own to fix it, but wanted to do a lot of research so I was likely to do it well. Happy I watched this video! Gonna learn to like what I've got and just have the tips cut a little to take off the straight bits on the bottom. You preemptively saved my 3ft long gorgeous healthy hair that's not quite as curly as I'd hoped it would be! Thank you!

I almost feel like people without a license in cosmetology should NOT be allowed to purchase a home perm kit. No offense to anyone, and I completely understand the people who are amazing at hair without a license, but there are WAY too many things that can go wrong when it comes to a perm. Not even just the crazy outcomes but the safety precautions alone are concerning watching some of these applications.

My mom had did my hair up until the last 10 years of my life. ill be 35 this year. and since I've done my own hair. but back in the 90s, my mom gave me a perm with spiral rods and it was AWESOME! but it's work. not just wake up and be like. im good. I have naturally curly hair. with no pattern AT ALL! And I have way more bad curl days than good!

I worked at a hair salon as a receptionist, and we had this one stylist who claimed they were amazing at perms. Sometimes they were- but a lot of the times not so much. They would literally experiment on their clients. I would walk by and just stare at what they were doing. Most of the time the perm wouldnt come out looking like a perm.

Once your hair is saturated you set the timer for 5 minutes. It's amazing how fast some perms are processing. Check every 5. Why did they use tiny rods? They could have salvaged it, take the small rods out and put big rods in before you neutralize. Horrible mess!

I used to perm my hair often by myself and it always turned out great. My friends mom did our hair in high school (late 80s-early 90s) and showed us how. Where she learned I have no clue bc she was a nurse by training, but it turned out well each time.

Im here commenting 3 years later, but OMG this tapped into a core memory I had suppressed. In the 80s my mom would perm my and my sisters hair at home and the result was AMAZING. Total lampshade shape and poodle bangs.

I just stumbled across this video. It totally reminded me of when my aunt permed my mom's hair. My aunt did a really tight perm. When my mom got home I distinctly remember telling her she looked like a used Qtip.

Curly hair makes your life easier
I dont even have curly hair, only wavy hair and its absolutely does not make life easier. Every time I shower or wake up in the morning I have no idea what my hair is going to do.

Me and my son did a home perm on my hair so we got form one and the rods. it came out nice but it what fizzy at the ends in a month. I had my hair cut short from long and it made my hair really curly and I love it

Curly hair is easier

I buzzed off that shit cause I got sick of the long curly hair. I don't even have anything close to the tightest curls you can get. Type 4 Curly hair peeps, much respect.
