The Best Pupusa Place in LA Is Some Ladys Backyard Dining on a Dime

The national food of El Salvador is the pupusa, and theres no better way to personify the humble culture. The best pupusas Ive had, in El Salvador or in the States, have usually been in some kind of covered outdoor setting: on a someones patio listening to rain tapping on a corrugated tin awning, or sitting at a long table with strangers, picnic-style, under a canopy or other kind of pavilion-like structure. Im not sure why that is. This is what makes eating pupusas at Backyard Pupusas, a modest set-up in South L. A, the magically informal experience it is. Lucas is simply the man. Watched every episode in one go because I couldn't get enough! I love that he goes to such interesting and out of the way places serving authentic and really good food! I definitely think he could be the next Bourdain, Zimmern and a lesser extent richman. Such a smart, witty, talented and funny guy really enjoyed watching these and can't wait for the second season!

What she is doing is probably more sanitary and safe than what happens in most restaurants. Because she sells directly to her neighbors, people who are members of her community. Her biggest fear would be to sicken the children her children play with or the elders of her community. Her reputation is at stake and that holds more sway over a vendor than any health rating from the city.

The best pupusas in LA are made every weekend mornings along St James Wood St and Vermont Ave! From 6am-12pm: They serve all types of Salvadoran meals, from atol chuco to atol de elote, pupusas, pastelitos, panes con pollo, yuca frita etc. Incase anyone sees my comment I recommend trying that place out. It is just Salvadoran ladies selling along the curb.

Great vid but not within the LA City health codes? Are you kidding? She probably has the most sanitary conditions in that shithole, if she can keep addicts from crapping in she street within 100 feet of her food! Get Pelosi to care about this hard working lady and maybe Ill understand why people keep voting for her.

Lucas- I was hoping you weren't gonna use a fork and a knife to dig in those Pupusas! lol, that's exactly how you eat pupusas bare fingers. Some of my Mexican friends ask me why is it so important? I simply tell them, It's tradition would you eat street tacos with utensils? enough said, by the way, great show.

there is a regional cuisine in Japan called o-yaki (meaning the grilled) with pickled veggies and miso stuffed into a dough just like pupusas. when it's grilled it gets crunchy on the outside and it's really good. I guess people love simple food like these everywhere.

I wish every town had their own pupuseria. I also like how Lucas is not a food snob and willing to have food made from someone's home. Also, his Spanish is nearly impeccable and did I hear he spent time in El Salvador? I'm intrigued. Great episode!

You are a great host and I hope Eater continues this series! A suggestion would be to maybe give more of a sense of each business owner's background, how they got to where they are now/their passion for food etc.

Lucas! This episode was a hit in El Salvador when it was released, and I come back every other time because it's nice to see our national dish being very much appreciated. Greetings from El Salvador!
