Hawaii is very family oriented. As a child my bus driver was uncle and my lunch lady was auntie, and they treated all kids like family. Often time when meeting local people, we can be a bit weary of you. But when you show us you are a good genuine person, local people are some of the sweetest, kind, giving, and friendly people around. It's all about gaining trust and becoming part of the Hui. If you come here and litter the beaches, act better than others, or just act like an ass, though; you will have issues like the ones you describe. It's like messing with a family, one huge family who will make it known that you're not welcome with your current behavior. Just be a good person and you will have no issues here!

Lucas you are eating the crab all wrong. You don't use chop sticks or fork or spoon. You put it in your mouth and suck the meat out as you bite down and pull the crab out of your mouth. That way all the meat gets scraped out into your mouth. It's an art to eating raw crab lol. I've been going to Alicia's for over 30 years and Leonard was a young man lol. You have to try their plate lunches. Sooooo good! Get the mixed plate with roast pork, prime rib, rice, potatoe salad, poke and kimchi. After you eat that, go find a nice shady tree and go into what we in Hawaii call Polynesian Paralysis.

I love Alicia Market their poke is pretty hard to beat. But I love going there for their Chinese roast plates which is #1 on the island! Some of my favorite poke spots on the island is Tamuras with their king crab garlic poke. Fresh catch poke shop and Ono seafoods which has a bit of an asian flare to their style of poke which is so good! And if I want some great poke on a budget, foodland supermarket has great cheap options which is hard to beat!

The first one you tasted was Masago (Capelin eggs)/wasabi poke' not Tobiko (Flying-fish eggs)/wasabi poke'. The second was Salmon Ponzu poke' not salmon/shoyu poke'. The tartness comes from the lemon juice in the ponzu sauce used (not vinegar. Amen to nuts in banana bread, not the same without them. Macadamia nuts the best but walnuts work in a pinch. I once had a bunch of crab poke' put me in the hospital for several days. Scary but delicious.

Also there's a poke shop that Alicias Market owns too and it taste good. They do their original things like lion dance and poke. Come Visit and u might see me there. So. i liked the vid but just wondering why the editor chose to include Lucas explaining the history behind the Japanese chef when the owner reiterates everything Lucas said with more detail anyway? I feel like that was. just a waste of time and pretty annoying. I was told the same information twice, and I'd rather hear it from the owner.

When I went to Hawaii, I stayed at Waikiki. The poke selection I had there weren't as numerous, but the ones I had at Food Pantry were delicious. That establishment also base their poke bowls with warm rice, followed by the poke, and finally some sesame seeds and/or seaweed flakes. Yum!

Thanks guys, for showing all the awesome food we have here! Don't mean to be a smartass, Lucas, but masago and tobiko are roe from two different fish (though they generally taste the same. Also, they add much more than just texture - they have a very briney, almost alcohol-y taste.

Nuts, specifically roasted nuts should be included in pretty much all desserts of sweets. Ice cream, cake, brownies, cookies, muffins, candy bars, etc. It makes everything that much better! And roasted peanuts on savory Asian dishes like salads elevates them to another level!
