On today's episode of Dining on a Dime, Lucas is in Montreal at Snowden's Deli eating the best smoked meat in the city. 8638marc: I live in Montreal and have been to this place (as well as Schwartz, many times. They have much more variety in terms of home made food (e. g, egg plant, cherry strudel, smoked fish, slaw. I'm not a big meat eater (therefore not a smoked meat connoisseur, but will often go to make of meal of the meatless items, because of the convenience, price and quality. If you are visiting Montreal and would like the smoke meat experience, I recommend this hands down over Schwartz. It has reasonable prices, you won't have to stand on the street waiting in line, and the customer service is way better. Try the old fashioned if you want bold, traditional flavors. They offer fast counter service for take out as well. It is only about 10 minutes walk from Snowdown metro.

One hot summer a long time ago i trekked up St_Laurent st. to a certain deli proclaimed to have the best smoked meat in Montreal, so i had to go and find out if it was true. It was a long walk, i started from Chinatown all the way up and i was never in good shape so it was a bit grueling for me. i make it there and ordered just a smoke meat sandwich. It was probably one of my first deli experiences so i didn't know about specifying the amount of fat on the meat you want. They didn't even ask and gave me a lean, it was the driest thing i have ever eaten and it just ruined my trip, taking that long ass walk for nothing. That was the first and last time i have ever went there The moral of this story here people is never, ever get a lean. Ughhh.

It is a passionate comment, I have been living in Montreal for more than 57 years and I have tried many places that peoples said they had the best-smoked meat in Montreal, and yes I do agreed that SCHWARTZ quality as gone down ever since it was purchased by Celine Dion, but when you go, try when its not bussy and you will get the best-smoked meat for your money. And as for Snowdendeli, I got sick both time I eat there, I asked for thin and lean and I got fat and thick and even when I complained nothing was done about it, and not only that, I was told to go eat somewhere else next time, SO for me its the worst service and smoked meat in Montreal, and I think I will copie and post that on my own vlog for everyone to see.

It's a question of taste between Schwartz and Snowdon. The style of smoke meat is a little different, Schwartz doesn't have nitrates and the brisket flavor is still present. Snowdon is less dry and doesn't retain the brisket flavor as much. Both are very good and preference is a question of taste. Both have kept the same format for a very longtime and are authentic. The Main (across the street from Schwartz's, Reubens (Downtown) and Smoke meat Pete's (west island area) are all good options also. Dunn's was turned into a food chain type of restaurant but was once one of the major smoked meat institutions.

I've lived in Montreal all my life (50+ yrs) and I would have to say that yes, Montreal has the best smoked meat around. Now which is is the best place depends on who you're speaking to. Everyone has their favorite place. Snowdon, Smoke Meat Pete, Dunn's, Ruebens and Schwartz, are all great. For me, smoked meat must be cut medium-fat. NOT fat mixed in with lean but that cut of the brisket where there is marbling throughout the meat. um. now I'm off to get some at my favorite place!

Lucas, you're breaking my heart! I have watched all of Dining on a Dime but have never been to a city that you've featured (I'm in Sydney, Australia. I just returned from a holiday in Montreal when this season began and I never even heard of Snowdon's Deli when I was there. I ate at Schwartz's and Reubens and enjoyed both, but I know I would have loved this place. Thankfully I did get to the other places you have reviewed so far, but this is still heartbreaking.

lol super true! I love Schwartz's smoked meat but the line up and all is super annoying. But Snowdon is fantastic. there is a line up sometimes. but alot of the locals seem to go there. i'm not a local. living on the west island, but i do pass through it after work each day. the meat and food is fantastaic, service is friendsly. never a problem. so it must be true that local montrealers do congregate to snowden intead to over schwartz. lol!

Lucas is right. I just had the sandwich at Schwarz's and it was pedestian at best. The flavour was bland unless you got some of the fat in the bite and the meat was dry to boot. I got it from the take-out store portion of the store btw so i dont know if the main sitdown part is any different but it shouldnt be. Everything Lucas said about Schwarz's was on point. I wish I had known about Snowdons.

That is not by a long shot, NOT the best place to eat smoked meat in Montreal, DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE YOU TALK ABOUT SMOKE MEAT, there is only one iconic place in Montreal for smoked meat and its called Schwartz, not Snowdendeli, it maybe good but not as good as Schwartz, ask the real peoples of Montreal where to find the best Montreal Smoked Meat and they will tell you SCHWARTZ

Snowdon Deli has always been my favourite smoked meat in Montreal. Moist, flavourful and made how you like it. Great service and ambiance. I often buy the hot smoked meat, rye bread and all the trimmings separately for poker night so my buddies can build their own sandwiches. Nothing against the other guys but Snowdon has always been my personal favourite. all the best. Chris
