I'm showing you my take on one of the world's greatest soups. Spicy and sweet Mulligatawny Soup is incredibly hearty, savory, and very comforting. This must be on every soup lover's bucket list. Garth: And this is where everything goes wrong. My take is not Mulligatawny soup and it's obvious, John must have had no access to Mulligatawnies, the real soup is green yes green. It has loads of coriander and mint leaves in it plus a few green chillies. So this isn't the soup it's not even close to the soup. This is just a complete mess of a great soup. I can post the real recipe here if you want it?

Darling boy, the presentation of this dish knocked my socks off. What a SPECTACULAR fall warming dish this will make. And to carry that apple sweetness off? Burn a couple of fall scented candles on your table. I think this will be on par with the Windsor's. That otta show that Gordon up, yeah! Thanks for a cut to the chase version of a wonderful Anglo-Indian starter.

Nice soup
But not mullagatawny
Mullagatawny means pepper water
Suggest any one wanting to make a traditional mullagatawny go online
No coconut in traditional mullagatawny
Also no potato just rice
But all the same a nice soup. Might of been better if you had just called it Indian spiced soup

Indeed, the anglicised name of this soup - Mulligatawny is derived from the Tamil Milagu Thanni, meaning Peppery Water in southern India where it is known to have originated and is still prepared widely and enjoyed heartily. This is a great recipe, Chef.

Truth is everyone needs more than their salary to be financiaIIy stable with this economy. Best thing to do with your money is to lnvest it rightly because money left for savings always end up used with no returns.

Have always been curious about this soup. Never had it or saw a recipe for it. Soup season is on the way --- Must finally make this one!
Oh, suggestion for leftover cream of coconut: Pina colada, of course!

I really like these recipes that only have one or two ingredients outside the stuff I have normally. Like, I d probably only need to buy one or two things to make this today. Great stuff as always, chef!

Fabulous take on this weird-because-it's-British 'Indian' soup. Including, though, an equally strange waste of olive oil? Mind you. sunflower oil restricted here in the UK because of a 'special operation'.

Thanks Chef John for turning out some classics lately. Don't get me wrong, I love the experimental CJ vids, but seeing you do classic & widely popular recipes/dishes is very nice in its own right.

The name Mulligatawny is derived from the tamil recipe Milagu Thanni (Pepper Water, popular in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Mulligatawny these days is had in Anglo Indian households.

Hey Chef John! I recently got a coconut and now I got a whole box of home made shredded coconut, much more than I expected. Could you recommend me some recipe(s) to put it to good use?

I have a recipe for Mulligatawney Stew where the main vegetable is peppers -- I use yellow, orange, and red. How interesting that your recipe has none.

I wish for a rundown on the history of curry powder, and what is or isn't traditional or authentic in regard to using it. For us white folk.
